Enable DLSS frame generation in FS2024 - For Newbies

Hi, I think this is very important for those of us who are new to DLSS.

IMPORTANT: If you want Flight Simulator to display the correct frame generation option in the menu (Graphics), and you have an RTX 40 or higher, you MUST enable the GPU-accelerated scheduling option in Windows Graphics Settings PREVIUSLY.

I spent a million tutorials watching, and NO ONE explained this OS setting, which impacted in the game. It seems obvious, but it’s good for them to know.

Sorry my bad english.

Best regards, Juan.

Thanks! This was one missing piece for me. I was wondering why I only saw AMD FSR 3 in the Frame Generation options. Now I see NVIDIA DLSS. There are a LOT of places to set things!

For clarity, it’s the setting below in Windows Settings.

Just started a flight, and panning around is super-smooth on the ground. I’ll report back after I try a flight.

Maybe you just didn’t search properly

I typed MSFS 2024 frame generation dlss missing into Google and found the answer in the first, second and third links. Every topic suggested by Google had a clear hint: to get DLSS Frame Generation working on NVIDIA 40xx and 50xx cards, HAGS needs to be enabled in Windows.

As MSFS fan if I personally had this problem, I’d click the second link - the official Microsoft Flight Simulator forum. Once there, I’d look at the post marked ‘Solved’ which shows the solution. Post 5 specifically explains that …

Anyway, it’s good that you wrote about this - another helpful topic online. There’s never too many of these. I’ll add that with MSFS 2024 and Frame Generation, there’s a small issue: it doesn’t work properly if the Developer Mode is also enabled.

I understand your point! But perhaps you haven’t noticed that when you enter those forums, there are MULTIPLE OPTIONS, each with its own solution, and at one point, I was seeing AMD FSR 3, which was very confusing.

Nothing, I just wrote this thread, which isn’t out of place, to make it clear that the FIRST thing you should adjust is this option… then the rest.

Greetings and thanks to everyone.

One nugget of info: once I enabled Windows 10 HAGS, I now have three options for Frame Gen: “None”, “AMD FSR3” and “DLSS”. I found that the moment I click the selector arrow and it says “AMD FSR3”, the sim just freezes solid, requiring me to kill it from Task Mangler. I simply hacked the UserCfg.ini to set it to NONE, then was able to select DLSS in the Sim (arrowing in the other direction). Once it’s on DLSS, it’s fine, but unsure if the above freeze is expected behavior.

More tinkering later today.

You have an RTX 4070, so you should choose DLSS Frame Generation. FSR3 is made for AMD, while FG DLSS is optimized for NVIDIA RTX cards and will give you the best results.

Note that AMD’s FSR3 frame generation is cross-platform compatible and should work with any GPU, while Nvidia’s DLSS frame generation is restricted to Nvidia cards only because it uses Nvidia’s custom “AI” compute units.

Both should work on an Nvidia card, though you may see different GPU usage and visual details between them as they use different scaling algorithms implemented differently. “In theory” there may be a performance advantage to using the separate AI compute units on the Nvidia card, which otherwise are laying dormant, as this may free up some time on other compute units for active rendering.

Note that if you’re seeing the simulator freeze or crash when selecting FSR3 framegen on an Nvidia card, be sure to report that specifically as a bug! That absolutely should not happen.

Understood, but even selecting FSR3 in the list in FS2024 Graphics settings freezes the sim, after I had set the HAGS to on. Prior to setting HAGS, it let me set it and use it.

I’ll definitely keep it on DLSS Frame Generation.

Thanks for the write-up; great info. I’ll see if I can consistently reproduce this….if so, I’ll do a bug report to Asobo.

40xx and 50xx only. HAGS must be enabled as well.
I can’t use DLSS Frame Gen with my 3090 Ti.
I have HAGS off and FSR3 Frame Gen works fine.

Similar result, I think. On my RTX 4070, with HAGS on, using the Fenix A320, I got super-smooth L/R panning, but I either got very poor FPS (like 11 FPS at KLAX with custom scenery and BATC traffic), or else the Fenix displays looked fuzzy. HAGS turned off with TAA and AMD FSR 3 at 2x gave me much better FPS, reasonable-enough panning, and crystal-clear Fenix displays.

As they say, there are no solutions, only trade-offs. Maybe next year I’ll invest in some upgraded hardware.
