Engine malfunction - C208 - based off weather (read full thread)

So between “Career Flights” I do free flight missions for my virtual airline - running with the C208b right now. So for two flights in a row I have been trying to fly and have received ENGINE MALFUNCTION warnings when I power up for takeoff - I actually took off the second time and the engine failed about two minutes later…really fun in IMC conditions. Once was ruled as a fluke since there is no setting for random failures that I can find. The second time…something is up. Now I can understand in career mode you have to upkeep your plane…but in Free Flight? There’s no mechanism for maintenance and I follow the flight manual procedures…so it’s not that I"m running the engine at redline for an entire flight.

Anyone else experienced something like this?

see above…engine malfunction leading to failure during free flight missions with the C208 (that’s the only aircraft I’ve experienced it with but also the only free flight aircraft I have much time with).

If applicable, which aircraft is experiencing this issue:
C208

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?
No…but i have nothing that would impact the aircraft and have added nothing new in the past week. Issues started today.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?
2 free flight attempts in a row…with MSFS shutdown in between flights.

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Free flight with C208
  2. Configure for takeoff
  3. Power up for takeoff…resulting in Engine Malfunction warning and engine failure about 2-3 minutes later

YOUR SETTINGS

If the issue still occurs with no mods and add-ons, please continue to report your issue. If not, please move this post to the User Support Hub.

• After trouble shooting and using the Debug Mode / Debug / Aircraft /Wear & Tear tool i was able to isolate the engine malfunction to the Starter during some weather conditions. It does not happen during clear weather. But during live weather (KVIS 091932Z AUTO 33005KT 1/2SM FG OVC001 08/08 A3026 RMK AO2 $) it IS happening EVERY time. Turn the starter on and you can see the engine Overstress start to tick higher and it stabilizes very soon after the starter is turned off and the engine is at normal power.

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

I have the same issue. I follow the the start-up from a real poh and after a few minutes, the engine shut down, with no reason. I am playing with live weather, i havn’t tried with custom weather.

Yes I was getting engine malfunction warnings in the 208 just after take-off on a career mission. I don’t think I was doing anything ‘wrong’ but not sure. Engine power cut out over the water west of Florida. Cost me half a million…

mike, where is this aircraft condition page? my Canadair water bomber hates being over tq for even a second, im wondering what this page will show me. (i also simply cannot take off with full water on board, have tried the full length of lake tahoe trying.)

PS, if anyone knows the secret to the water bomber, DM me.

Same for me. In bad weather conditions I get a engine malfunction after a few minutes.
Only way to avoid this to skip to start and get airborne as quick as possible. Same after arrival. If there is bad weather I need to skip directly to parking, otherwise I get a engine malfunction.

I just had 2 engine system malfunction warnings in o/c conditions so aborted. Then got a a VFR flight but that had the engine malfunction too. So have aborted 3 consecutive flights because of this. All in the Caravan. There’s nothing wrong with the aircraft and all properly maintained. Frustrating after doing all the prep and set up. Just immersion destroying.

Edit: I think this was my mistake. It looked like the aircraft was in good condition but when I gave it a proper technician check the engine was badly worn. I’m not quite sure how that happened so quickly as I certainly don’t thrash it, but anyway, paying the 600k has fixed it and the problem has gone. I’m glad I got to the bottom of it but I’m really not sure how it deteriorated so quickly. Plus there was no clear indication that anything was amiss when looking at the maintenance page.

It’s in the debug menu.

This happened to me today. I was using the Vision Jet in career mode, but as employee, not freelance as i do not own a vision jet.

It was a VIP mission from Venice to Muenster in Switzerland. On my first attempt, I was halfway through the taxi, and got an ‘Engine Malfunction’ banner drop from the top of the screen, then the engine surged and quit. I could not re start the engine.

I then restarted the mission. This time I got as far as turning onto the runway…. Same thing… Banner drop down “Engine Malfunction”, engine has a small surge, then quits. Again, I could not restart the engine.

3rd try….. restarted the mission… this time I got 75% of the way to my destination in the cruise at F190, and there it went again. Same banner, same message “Engine Malfunction” The engine quit, so I had to abort.

When the engine quits, there is no warning indications in the cockpit, like warning on the PFD that something is wrong. The only thing that is semi similar to the OP’s situation, is that the weather was bad. Raining in Venice, overcast with bad visibility.

However, when it quit the third time, I was VMC between the cloud layers, with Ice protections on.

The randomness of this is extremely frustrating, and the prep that goes into an IFR flight just goes down the toilet for absolutely no reason.

This happened to me today for the first time. In this case my aircraft is a C172 and I’m in career mode. The mission starts in Orly (LFPO)

Same as the rest, about 2 minutes after starting engines I receive the Engine Malfunction and I see a warning of Low Vaccum in the PFD. After that engine stops.

There’s no wear and tear problem, this aircraft has been revised just before the flight and everything is right.

Perhaps its a higher power trying to tell you that you shouldn’t be trying to fly in that weather

At least you got a PFD warning. I got zippo. It hasn’t happened since my previous post though. So for me, if it happens again, I’ll just eject out of the mission and maybe restart the game and try another mission :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Count me in… 737 Max Career missions to and from Boozeman. Montana. Poor visibility and snow, BOTH engines died on taxiing out after landing. After reparing (36 million btw) I flew the next mission from the same airport in the same weather and both engines died during taxiing to the runway. I tried it multiple times and the result was the same. No indication on the instruments just the engine malfunction banner. Luckily this time I was prepared and ALT+F4’ed it immediatley to avoid the next 36M bill.

I first thought ok maybe this special airport is bugged somehow but then I saw this thread and the theory with the bad weather fits my case perfectly

Has anyone figured this one out yet? It still happens and is a major pain in the ■■■…

The only workaround is use the debug tool to pause wear and tear during take off, and resume after that. But unfortunately it’s not possible in career mode, so I think it’s still a bug

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
• Yes

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• My case is a C172 G1000 Cargo, when loaded in some bad weather

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:
• by checking the wear & tear panel, the engine start decrease as soon as I started
if I manually pause the wear & tear in panel and take off, then I can continue fly without problem.
