Excessive VRAM and RAM usage

What did you have your texture resolution set to?

I’m using a 4080Super with only 32gb. Mine is set to high instead of ultra 1440p ultra wide and it solved most of my stuttering issues at the larger airports tested with fstl.

I set it to medium or even low - had seen some posts about it maybe causing the issue but no improvement. Even if I set everything to LOW I get the stutters in handcrafted Asobo airports, even without traffic.

But your reply made me think. Should I try FSTL? I have it for 2020 but thought it does not work with 2024.

So I’m running a Ryzen 7 5800X and RTX 5070 (12GB) and disabling resizable bar in the bios seemed to have reduced my VRAM usage in msfs2024. I recommend you give it a shot.

Yup I did this after changing from AM4 to AM5. My previous mainboard bios didn’t allow disabling the resizable bar. Practically rebuilt my PC. Now running a 9800x3d, 64GB DDR5-6000 with my 4070 Super 12GB. Texture resolution is set to medium and everything else mainly high or off. While the sim now runs smoother in DLSS at 1440p, the VRAM consumption is still way too high compared to MSFS2020. TAA still leads to VRAM going go beyond 11GB with the FENIX A320 at Airports like EDDF. This can’t really be it, IMHO. Also, performance is pretty inconsistent. Sometimes, I taxi to a gate after landing and at some point VRAM goes up to 12-13GB and doesn’t recover leading to stuttering when panning around. Only sim restart helps. While I wouldn’t call my system HIGH-END, I’m practically running Microsoft’s Ideal specs for MSFS2024.

Bringing that up again, I got performance issues after SU3 Beta still. My GPU is 99% of the time, my settings range from medium to high.

I use a RTX4070 Laptop, 64GB RAM and an i9-13900HX…

This is not, on its own, an indicator of anything gone wrong.

I started having this issue just recently. GPU is 99% all the time, and the FPS drops to 5. I can’t fly until there is a fix. GPU used to be within 50%-60%.

I don’t think GPU usage is necessarily the issue though - that just means you’re not CPU bottlenecked. There are other factors at play, I would assume.

I get average GPU usage, but its maxing out my VRAM and telling to lower settings. I went from high to medium on a 16GB card and yet still almost maxed out VRAM where I keep getting on screen warnings to lower yet again settings

same here 4070Ti medium settings GSX and IFY in OKC no scenery and or ai traffic and still at 13-14gbs out of 16. definetly something is attracted to hogging VRAM and if not they need to go back to 2020 of planes or scenery should be hard ram not vram

This just started happening to me too but only within last few days and haven’t been able to fix it.

5700x3d, 3080, 64gigs all ssd etc. and MSFS24 was running pretty nice with GSX, FSLTL, Global Ships all with pretty high settings and was fairly smooth even add-on airports. 35 to 55 fps avg and above with high traffic and very smooth once I’m in the air. SU3 beta btw.

I reinstalled sim and no addons at all and still running terrible for me.

When I first opted into SU3 beta it ran good.

Last few days vram through the roof and literally single digit fps choppy almost everywhere. Even menus. Nothing on my system has changed and everything else runs fine including MSFS2020, Xplane12, DCS, Star Citizen, Elite Dangerous etc.etc. So definitely something strange with 24. I’ve lowered settings almost all the way down still running horrible.

Curious if that’s what’s happening with you guys?

Performance drop happens because when dedicated VRAM is fully used, the GPU would offload the memory usage to shared memory (RAM), which is slower than VRAM.

I had the performance issue, but after I lowered the texture resolution settings to MEDIUM or HIGH, the sim became playable again.

Asobo needs to figure out on how to avoid this memory offloading issue and they should manage VRAM better.

Aside, my dev-box shows the FG (double) number and my RTSS shows the true fps number, which does decrease in low, close-in, airport settings.

I know Asobo has a challenging task but the management of VRAM in FS2024 is the worst of any PC game I have ever seen.
