Excessive VRAM and RAM usage

I used to run msfs 2020 in 4k with decent performance (14700k + 32Gb DDR4 and 12 Gb 4070Ti). It was not perfect, but it would do the job even with cpu demanding airplanes like Fenix 320 family).

However, when running default aircraft (ini 330 or 321) with high settings in msfs 2024, both RAM and VRAM usage exceed my hardware limits, bringing fps between 10 to 20 fps (even when flying above 30.000 feet).

Performance is so bad it is unplayable for me.

Please, guys, do something to control the VRAM/RAM usage.

The game is frequently using 13 Gb VRAM and 31/34 Gb RAM.

It was not supposed to request this ammount of data, per published minimum hardware specs.

I have the same problem. I’m experiencing massive performance issues in the new flight simulator, especially regarding FPS. For example, in larger sceneries, my GPU utilization is almost 100%. As soon as the GPU utilization exceeds 95%, the FPS drops significantly.

I’m using an RTX 4080 Super, which even exceeds the ideal hardware requirements. That’s why I think it should actually be possible to play on Ultra settings. For instance, I haven’t set the Terrain Level of Detail above 200.

The issue frequently occurs after a few minutes or when I open the settings menu. If I open the settings menu, zoom out briefly, and then close the settings again, I experience massive FPS issues because the GPU utilization becomes extremely high. However, I haven’t had any problems in career mode so far.

My system:

RTX 4080 Super
32 GB RAM
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D

I turned off Displacement Mapping and excessive use of Vram and Ram improved.

Yes it sucks, it is unplayable for me with i7 13700F and RTX4080 at medium to low settings, 45 LOD and OLOD - VRAM and GPU super high, getting 17-24 FPS. I play FS2020 at 35-45 FPS with High to Ultra settings 135 OLOD and LOD. This is sad as Microsoft promised better performance.

What does displacement mapping do exactly? Just curious.

It basically improves the terrain by improving the drawn polygons. But unfortunately it was just a coincidence. The only aircraft currently used is the Cirrus Vision Jet.

Ah so it was a placebo? Still have the issue with it off?

When you installed MSFS 2024, it displayed a screen that said something like “based on your hardware, your optimal graphic setting is (low, medium, high, ultra). Which one was selected based on your hardware?

Recommended settings were the “high”. Changing/Lowering the Terrain LOD had no positive impact on VRAM or RAM usage.

Yes same here. It appears something funny is going on. I noticed the same problem of significant fps drop (40ish to less than 20) after going into the settings menu. I also noticed when looking at the Dev mode fps counter that my CPU will be suddenly stressed like crazy (60ms main thread) while my GPU is doing decent (20ms). What is weird is it will suddenly switch and my GPU will be bogged down while my CPU frees up. The whole time this is happening there is massive stuttering. Maybe the switching has something to do with the fact I was playing on a laptop? Maybe power was being dynamically adjusted between the CPU and GPU, idk. It is a shame that MSFS 2024 has been launched in this bad of a state.

guys, there are a number of threads talking about what i believe to be the same issue
the sim is allocating on the shared video memory and that’s what brings the whole thing down, i think
please vote here so maybe we can get some kind of response

RTX 3080 10GB here. same major issues here.

Already cancelled the game pass that would renew in 25 days. At least I didn’t pay anything near full price for this.

Will revisit 2024 in 6 or 12 months or so… But I’ll still give it a few go’s in the next 25 days.

Check this out

What resolution you running at? I’m on a i1399kf with 96Gb RAM and 4070 super and all is fine. If you are trying to run at 4k might be worth using DLSS to render at a lower resolution and upscaling.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll try it tomorrow.

I also experience this making any plane other that GA unflyable.

My usage shoots to over 96% usage on both VRAM and RAM.

I’ve been experiencing this too. I will have butter smooth fps above 100ft AGL on any aircraft, but below that it becomes a slideshow during takeoff and landing. I’ve also noticed that if I change aircraft or airport in sim or close the sim and reopen it without restarting my PC performance is significantly worse.

I have a 4090, with settings on Ultra at iniBuilds LHR in the Fenix A319 on Vatsim, my VRAM usage is 19-21/24GB if I turn off the optimise performance option. With it turned on, it’s still 16-18/24GB. I run on 1440p UW monitor with 13900k. Frame rate is ~30fps.

That is definitely not normal. Thanks for sharing.

Hello,
I had the same issues. the FPS was horrible. I have a i9-14900k 48 DDR5 RAM and a 3070. For me what it worked was to put to OFF the option NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency… Im at 40 FPS stable now in High-End settings! Also in Nvidia App dont forget to put to OFF the Latency option! I couldt fly with the Fenix. Now im smooth and stable! Give it a try and tell me if it worked!

Happy flying, cheers mate!

EDIT:
False alarme. I thought it was good but after a few minutes the problem came back :frowning:
