Exploring the world in the Beechcraft Bonanza

Leg 167, Dawei, Myanmar (Burma) via Andaman and Nicobar Islands to Hat Yai, Thailand

DAY02_05.PLN (5.4 KB)

A little detour to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, technically back in India again. I didn’t quite make it to Malaysia, stopped short at the border. Beautiful islands though, worth a visit.

Flight time 8:25 13 stops

Early morning on the way to Palaw

And further South to Myeik

Myeik Airport spotted, much easier when they have lights

Myeik in the extreme south of Myanmar on the Andaman Sea

On the West side of the Malay Peninsula, which Myanmar shares with Thailand

Sunrise shortly after departure to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Passing over Kadan

And then a lot of Andaman Sea

I didn’t take many pictures of the islands due to a current issue with coast lines. Water creeps up the shore in ugly triangles, not the best time to go island hopping. Hopefully it will be fixed before I set out over the Pacific ocean.

North Andaman, Andaman and Nicobar islands, India

Shibpur Airstrip near Kalipur Beach (in front)

Kalighat a bit further South on North Andaman

Port Blair on South Andaman, looking at the Circular Prison down below

It used to be circular, a bit over a quarter left as a museum

Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (1883-1966) an Indian independence activist was imprisoned here

Vinayak Savarkar formulated the Hindu nationalist philosophy of Hindutva and was a leading figure in the Hindu Mahasabha. Savarkar is still a debated figure, nationalist or traitor.

Savarkar was arrested by the government for making “Hindu nationalist speeches” and got a 50 year sentence for revolting against the Morley-Minto reforms. He was released after 13 years after promising to to participate in politics any more.

Interesting figure, also (wrongly) accused for being part of Gandhi’s assasination

Port Blair Airport, the runway is certainly long enough

Port Blair Tsunami Memorial. The Andaman and Nicobar islands were hit hard in the 2004 Tsunami.

Back over the Andaman Sea to the Nicobar Islands

Katchal island below

Mahasamudra beach

I was wondering what that spot was, seems to be just an exposure issue on the source data

Katchal, beautiful beaches and a picture of the aftermath of the 2004 Tsunami

Ranganatha Bay on Nicobar island

Campbell Bay a bit further South

With a nice airport along the shore

Beautiful place, yet beware, that sign on Marganala beach warns of frequent Crocodile visits

Long flight back to the Malay Peninsula, arriving at Phuket island, with the Big Buddha on top of the hill

The Big Buddha Phuket and a shot of the lovely waters around here

Phuket city along Patong Beach, the main resort town

Freedom beach on the left, Monkey hill viewpoint on the right

Patong has a busy nightlife, Chillva night market on the left

Patong is also notorious for its raunchy nightlife, Thanon Bangla walking street on the right

Phuket International Airport at the North end of the island

Passing over Phru Nai headed further East

Ko Hong, little island with a hidden lagoon on the left

Sai Thai Garden Home below

Krabi

Tha Di river under the low hanging clouds

Cha-Ian Airport in Pak Phun

Songkhla, known for the white-sand beach Hat Samila, home to a bronze mermaid sculpture

Songkhla Municipal Song Thale Park, Khatichon Wittaya Museum and the Mermaid Sculpture

Hat Yai located close to the Malaysian border

Wat Hat Yai Nai with one of the largest reclining Buddha statues and Hat Yai Muncicipal Park

Final stop for today, Hat Yai International Airport

Malaysia tomorrow and Indonesia next.
