Extreme low FPS at handcrafted airports in VR

This was reported during SU2 beta - by many users - and not just VR users at that, I hope that all these reports are being “Feedback Logged” seriously and not just added to a long pile of issues, these performance drops simply must take priority.

For me I have found today the reason for the performance issues in VR in SU3: it was AutoFPS. Activating AutoFPS decreased FPS by around 25%. Without this tool, I can activate settings (graphic settings in the sim and render resolution in the OpenXR Tool) even higher as in SU2. In particular at complex airports (EDDF, EDDM) the benefit is impressive.

The above post describes an issue caused by the mod Auto FPS.

I haven’t been using this mod so it was not the cause for me

No change in 1.5.7.0. RdrThread goes through the roof on most airports with handcrafted buildings in VR.

i am a beta tester from the beginning, started with 2020, tested EVERY build.
I have to say i might decide to leave beta testing, because there are too many restrictions so i cannot use the sim at all.

1: with the new beta system i cannot fly with my mates online who aren’t in the beta. (that worked before)
2: if i have in ALL builds the same problems again and again, especially these low FPS when trying to land, flying makes no sense anymore! We ALL enjoy and are proud of a successful landing and that way it kills the whole flight.
3: one flight the ATC window opens, the next flight it doesn’t, and again that bug which put the ATC window in front of the cockpit view without saving and restoring the position is annoying as hell. Don’t know why they don’t fix that.
4: Challenges the bugs are not fixed, first challenge flight i see the time counter to compare if i am fast or not, on the second flight it is just hidden and can’t be seen again.

I tend to keep low expectations when joining beta programs as we are helping to find bugs at the end of the day. It’s not intended for our enjoyment as much as it is for testing the builds.

With that being said, I also left the beta for SU3 as I’m unable to fly at all (I mostly fly in VR) - and my computer is a brick in VR in 2024. There’s no use in me participating in testing if I can’t even achieve 20 FPS in the headset on the ground. I’ve just switched back to 2020 at this time, I encourage you to do the same if VR is your primary use.

I know the feeling. Having spent some time in VR trying to get the 787 working with a reasonable fps (>25 say) and without stutters (only achieved intermittently), I went to FS2020 to calm down. My flight there achieved an fps consistently above 40, even without tweaking, foveated rendering etc.

SU3 beta is a backward step compared with SU2 - for me at least, worse performance and more CTDs.

I really don’t understand how they went from a reasonable working simulator to the bug-ridden, under-performing “upgrade” that is FS2024.

A post of mine received a similar rebuke about a year ago in FS2020. At that time, I was told to “rest assured” the development team were looking into implementing an equivalent feature.

Well that never happened in FS2020, and the FS2024 attempt has never worked for me.

I wish MS/Asobo could understand that this lack of response to customers wishes is why simmers are forced to turn to “unauthorised” software.

Another thing to think of. This utility is useless and doesnt do a thing to Msfs without mobiflight.

The low FPS problem isn’t just at handcrafted airports. I’m on SU2 release in VR on 7800X3D/4090 at RJTT and FPS tanks there too (on low settings). 2020 doesn’t have the problem. SU3 beta is no better. EDIT FPS 2024 is 25FPS and 2020 is 45FPS same rendition quality.

YEP! Thats true. My FS2020 runs on every Airport smooth in VR on ULTRA with my 5080RTX. FS2024 is bad!Which guy came up with the idea of displaying so many detailed shrubs, trees, etc. in the high details. When you fly, no one cares if the trees have bark or leaves. I need performance and good graphics without all this stuff. That’s not a hiking simulator!:joy:

This also happens very clearly on SU2. I run with a 5090 with a 13700 (using ALVR on a Vision Pro and VD on a Quest 3, both show same issue), and everything is super smooth except while at handcrafted airports, or scenery that has a lot of handcrafted elements, where it dips 50%. Simply looking awar from the handcrafted assets drastically boosts the FPS. TIN cities like NYC present no slowdown. Apparently SU3 beta is even worse in this area. They’ll track this down eventually.

I can confirm in side by side testing SU3 is in fact much worse. Maybe 11-15fps? If you leave the cockpit and go back inside as well in a handcrafted airport (I am using FlyTampa’s KBOS) it just completely stops working and generating frames. In SU2, it still bogs down but if you look away it recovers (to 45fps plus).

I have a very similar experience as you do. I have 9800x3d 64GB RTX 4070ti super 16 GB VRAM Quest 3 with Virtual Desktop SU3 beta.
I can get a rock solid 72fps when not at a crafted airport. At the three airports I flew from today Hobart YMHB nzasimulations Canberra YSCB impulsesimulations and Brisbane YBBN orbx.
Both YMHB and YSCB frames almost halved when looking at terminal buildings. Surprisingly YBBN which is as detailed as the others there was little appreciable drop.
At none of the airports was my system stretched mostly 10 or 11 GB of VRAM usage and about 80 to 85% GPU load.
The thing I found most weird if looking out of the cockpit (Ifly 737 Max) at the terminals the impact seemed less.
They seem to be making progress but me I’m too impatient…

Here are a couple of screen shots to highlight the issue in VR one looking at the building at the default EGLL and one looking out the left rear of the cockpit as you can see there is a big hit with the rdr thread taking a hit.

The black line on the left image was an accidental line drawn in Paint when stitching the images together not something in game.

So glad I came across this thread as this week I reinstalled 2024 SU3 beta and had no end of issues landing and departing both the in game airports and 3rd party airports. It’s driven me mad trying all sorts of settings but with no joy.

I only fly GA aircraft and in VR but I lose about 25 frames by just taxing towards terminal buildings and when taking off or landing it’s like a slide show. My FPS is locked at 45 which I get no problem but as soon as I start taxing, departing or landing the FPS takes a big hit.

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t like this in SU2🤔

My system is 7800x3d, 4070ti super, 64gb ram, pimax crystal light. All drivers upto date.
2024 is getting there in VR but for me will revert back to 2020 for my VR flying.

No improvement in 1.5.9.0.
The problem is that there is no real workaround for this bug. Disabling all handcrafted airports would be ridiculous.

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:

the same problem, looks like CPU is being overloaded above the terminal, compared to the GPU and to MSFS 2020.
If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

This is exactly what I’m experiencing. It’s so frustrating ha! It’s quite literally the only reason I cannot fly in 2024. I’m gaslighting myself to think it will improve every time, knowing that it won’t. Everytime I look out the side window/away from the airport, I’m amazed by the smoothness locked at 45 FPS. As soon as I look back toward the terminal, I’m back to sub 20 FPS and my CPU maxed out.
