I see the FBW auto is trim working well. That alone will make everything else feel inferior. Happy New year folks! Hopefully the Devs come back from their break and start approving some things for xbox!

Love the F-16, it’s my favorite plane!

Is there any chance of getting the AOA bracket added to HUD (when the landing gear is down) in the upcoming update? I attached a reference photo.

That’s a very helpful image as I was hoping to check out whether the F-16 HUD had one - now I know :slight_smile:

Trying to setup a realistic profile for my FFB stick, hence a few questions about FBW in the real aircraft


How does it translate to stick forces:

  • when you deflect the stick, does it behave like a C172 or other mechanical airplane in where force increases with deflection (like a desktop joystick) around a centerpoint?
  • does it behave like a joystick with the springs removed (i.e. constant force across the deflection range)?
    -if there are non-linear forces, do they depend on airspeed (like a C172 again), or does airspeed not matter?

Also on the centerpoint/deflection (if there is one), how do the forces feel
when commanding an attitude:

  • do you release the stick when the attitude is reached and return to a centerpoint?
  • does the plane autotrim to that attitude i.e. the stick stays in the new position with no force (like in a modern helicopter with autotrim)? How does it do this?
  • do you manually trim away the forces like in a C172?

In other words, does the stick position equal a certain attitude (like in all mechanical airplanes and helicopters), and does the FBW automatically get rid of the force at that position? Or do you fly it exactly like you would a C172 (trimming etc) and FBW only makes sure it is stable?

Maybe an example helps
 let’s say you command a 10deg nose up pitch by pulling back with the stick and the airplane is now in that attitude
 what happens next and how does it feel on the stick?

As developers we cannot help you since we do not have an FFB joystick to emulate the feeling of the stick compared to the real F-16. However, there are articles like the one below that could provide you some perspective as to what a pilot with FBW modern fighters feels in real life:

"Fly-by-wire control systems for aircraft simulate the feel—that is, the feedback forces—that a pilot senses while flying the aircraft. When hydraulic controls first entered such systems, force feedback to the control stick was provided by springs and bob-weights that attempted to duplicate the forces (forces previously felt from direct linkages to the control surfaces) caused by airloads on the control surfaces, or by changes in the angle of attack at constant speed. This at times, and depending on the demands of the task, resulted in overcontrol and pilot-induced-oscillations (PIOs). Military specifications (8785b) and standards (8785) attempted to guide designers so that a “good feel” was presented to the pilot, and today these “flying qualities” are evaluated by test pilots skilled in the use of what is called the “Cooper-Harper” rating scale.

Modern fly-by-wire aircraft control systems are digital, and the generalized science of force feedback is called “haptics” (there are many applications in robotics). It is interesting to note that the original analog F-16 control stick had no motion. Pilots during air-to-air engagements often pulled well over one hundred pounds on the stick, and this occasionally resulted in muscle spasms. Also, without a center detent formation takeoffs were often made with aircraft rolling towards each other at liftoff. This was soon corrected to the system that exists today, where the max displacement stop is hit at around forty pounds or so of applied force depending on the flight regime.

I should mention that the lack of feedback or sensory control has been cited as a contributing cause to a major accident of an Airbus A330 (Air France Flight 447 on June 1, 2009), when one pilot held the aircraft in a stalled condition with a control input that could not be sensed by the other, more experienced pilot. This is one of the design differences between Airbus and Boeing that still generates controversy, and I must admit that I am on Boeing’s side on this."

Thanks! I suppose it won’t hurt to think a modern one will simulate deflection forces on the stick then, and use that accordingly (not that I will ever fly a real one anyway)

Does it have autotrim, or do you need to trim it (the SC Designs one at least)?

Definitely it has autotrim, except in landing configuration (when landing gear is extended) :slight_smile:

Does the real F-16 show your vertical speed on the HUD? I just bought the plane and for the most part I am happy with it, but one thing I don’t see is a vertical speed indicator on the HUD. I know there’s a gauge below the main panel which shows you the VS, but it isn’t visible when looking straight ahead. From what I understand, the cockpit is getting an upgrade, but I’m not sure if that’s something that will be included or whether it’s even available on the real plane.

Hello, regarding your question, reviewing the manual of block 52 does not appear a vertical speed indicator, but in block 32 it does appear, nevertheless,
it looks like the indicator you have in the right pfd without expressing the numerical value and that’s why I didn’t include it:

However I will study if we include it or not.

Is there any way to bind the smoke switch to a key or not cause there is no such option in MFS ?

No, the smoke switch is by definition a custom one. If Asobo were to add a smoke switch, then it could be bound to a key, but until they do it’s not possible.

What about the HUD brightness ?
There are some options to assign, but nothing is working, I tried all of them
