What a plane! I had my doubts, and already had the DCS F-16C module, so I was on the fence for a while (just fly it in DCS I told myself
). Picked up the plane on the marketplace on a whim, grabbed the local livery from flightsim.to, fueled her up and took a blind run to the north from KTUS. Zoom climbed to FL450 off the runway, waved my wings at some much slower GA players on the way out, performed some acrobatics at Mach 1.2 over Phoenix, and then got totally lost up the canyons to the north at supersonic speeds and 100 feet AGL. Performed what I hope was seen as a respectful intercept on another player in an airliner, but they dropped into IMC and I didn’t know where the de-icing switches are yet so I had to break off. Landed at KPRC in Prescott once the ice melted off my canopy.

This plane’s flight model is just like the DCS one as far as I can tell, which is to say it’s like nothing else, especially in VR. It would be nice if the systems looked a little more authentic, but the important stuff for the kind of flying you will be doing in MSFS is all there and works basically like it does in DCS. Frankly, the DCS F-16 is a nightmare to start up so I totally get why SC designs made this decision to simplify things.

The F-16 is really a great fit for MSFS. Fast, agile, great visibility, and decent range. You can basically do anything you would want to do in the sim but haul cargo with it. I guess you could even drop it into neofly and RP putting passengers in some travel pods

I would like to report a couple of issues I have found with this aircraft on Xbox.

1, When in external view and panning around, at times the engine sound disappears completely and comes back as you keep panning around.
2, Should the elevators ‘wobble’ when in their max positions? When I climb at max rate on external view I can see the elevators are wobbling up and down slightly.

Keep up the good work, it is a great aircraft to fly.

Not sure they’re really bugs or anything - 3D sound is what you’re hearing there and in real life jets can be quite quiet sometimes if you’re behind them and they’re not in afterburner. Wobbling control surfaces is usually caused when controllers are at the extreme of their motion - mine do it occasionally also. The animation is merely 100 frames, so if the sim can’t tell quite where the controller’s positioned the result is a “wobbling” between several keyframes.

I’ll keep an eye on it though, in case there is anything amiss with the control surfaces.

Fighters are actually almost silent when directly behind them even with full reheat. Might seem a little odd to most gamers however. Just a little to the side and the noise comes back very quickly.

You’re probably going past the speed of sound
If you’re in front of the aircraft looking back, the aircraft arrives at a fixed point in space before the sound does, which is why you can’t hear it!

Thanks for the reply Deano1973,

The thing with the sound though is that it goes completely. Not like it’s fading. With 3d sound I would expect it to fade as I moved away from the exhaust but it becomes totally silent and only at certain points. If when it goes I move the camera up or down it comes back even slightly.
Would be easier if I could put up a video but I don’t know how to do that.

That’s not how it’s happening.

I can be behind and full reheat sound, pan around to the side at at a certain point the sound goes completely, if I continue going towards the front the sound comes back.

What is your airspeed when this is happening? More specifically, what is the indicated Mach number? If you’re supersonic, that’s exactly how sound works.

I’ll do some more testing tonight and report back with some more details.

Any idea how to get the ice off the Windshield without having to change the weather? Tried the Windshield De-Ice switch but no luck, maybe I am missing something.

So here’s what’s happening currently.

I’m at FL270, 493 Knots flying straight and level.

Switch to external view and viewing the aircraft from the rear.

Now if you imagine a clock face on the aircraft with 12 o’clock on the nose and 6 o’clock on the exhaust, as I pan around to approx 4 o’clock there is suddenly no engine noise at all. All you can here is the wind.
I can move back to to 6 o’clock and the engine noise returns.
I can slowly creep to 435 knots at which point the engine noise disappears and if I slowly reduce throttle it’ll come back at around 425 knots.

Is this what you’d expect?

I’ve also just noticed something else. When reheat is on the yellow gases don’t pass out of the exhaust however a very faint grey cone can be seen against the clouds.
The reheat is not like the F15 model in which the jet eflux extends out from the exhaust. Is this a work in progress?

Flying this plane on Xbox and I cannot get it to do a loop, if I pull up I end up flying straight up and losing airspeed at a fast rate. Whatever I’ve tried I cannot get the F-16 to invert over the top of the loop. Any ideas? Not sure if there is a switch I need to enable/disable in the aircraft.

Edit: I deleted the DLC and reinstalled and now it’s flying correctly. Not sure what was wrong.

Is that 493 knots INDICATED airspeed or TRUE airspeed? And I ask again, what is the indicated Mach number?

IAS 435 knots, think TAS was around 610 knots. Mach number no idea.

You REALLY need to post your Mach number for people to be able to tell you if what you hear is normal.

That said, I’ve flown the F-16 quite a bit and never noticed anything odd or weird about the external sounds. If you are convinced something is amiss, you can always uninstall and reinstall to see if you’re hearing the same thing.

You are somewhere at between mach 1.0 - 1.1 at 27000ft, 435knots IAS

Yeah, you’re supersonic at that IAS and altitude. Try it at 350 knots at 5,000ft for a quick test, but that angle would indeed be the quietest as you’re neither behind the exhaust nor in front of the intake.

@xPartyAtMyPlace Deice switches are right hand side panel, near the side wall, level with the pilot’s shoulder.

Thanks Deano1973,
So it’s normal behaviour then, my mistake.

What about the reheat effect I asked about above? Should I see the reheat effect extend out from the back of the exhaust like on the F15 model?
