February 5th 2025 Developer Livestream - Discussion

Quick resume doesn’t work period. There is only a small handful of games where it works properly. Causes major issues since most games are online now so the disconnection to servers makes you usually force quit anyway.

On the oft repeated 18,000 bugs number. I don’t believe it is correct or even close to correct. It is much lower.

I believe the comments on the stream said of the 50k reported bugs that many were duplicates, or not bugs at all - so they weren’t counted in the 32,000 fixed but are still not outstanding bugs either.

I was in charge of the bug priority list of a couple of medium sized software products for many years and was always closing a large percentage of the reported bugs as not actually a bug.

My favourite was a user entered a ticket that users login passwords were displayed on the main screen. In fact in the new version we had added a new data field and the label of the field matched his (rather simple) password.

The difference between now and the old days of the FSX and pre-FSX era is that Microsoft/Asobo have an “official” marketplace for 3rd party add-ons so people just assume they should automatically all work together without any loss of memory/power/graphics.

Back in the old days you downloaded/purchased from a site and knew there was always the risk that it might not work with your PC or could just be a buggy add-on and would blame the developer.

Now since everything is grouped together, developers still only worry about their product (and rightfully so) while consumers look to blame Microsoft/Asobo because those items are on their marketplace (which is probably the wrong place to blame). It’s especially rough on console since it’s not as configurable as a PC and it’s the only way to download add-ons.

2020 started crashing on me last week. I’d leave the machine for an hour, come back, and as soon as I started manipulating things, ‘Doink,’ the machine locked up.

I was flying over southern Germany at the time, one of the best/most intense places to fly for scenery and PG, so I put it down to that. Things kept getting worse, with 4-5 hard lock-ups a day. As much as Germany was a joy, I couldn’t wait to leave.

One particular freeze killed the sim, but left me looking at other apps already open in the background, I could see the mouse pointer center screen, wiggled the mouse, and nothing, the machine was frozen again.

At this point, I thought ‘mouse batteries’ and swapped in some fresh ones.

Crash free and rock solid ever since. It was the mouse dying all along.

Exactly. What I heard was: well we load this stuff into VRAM and often it runs over the limits we guess and we think that is bad. This is why it is bad for 8GB, 12GB and 16GB rigs. Harder to overload the 16GB but if they put their minds to it then can work out an overload.

Right - so the point stands: World Updates have not shown to be Marketplace-dependent.

They found the extra 18,000 bugs because it stared them in the face.

If they had done “proper” testing there would be more than twice that.

Most of the fixes done so far are for some of those they knew about at launch, so a “solution” was already in the pipeline. We are still waiting for the vast majority of user-identified bugs to be addressed. Frankly, at the current rate of progress, I think that many will never be fixed.

Microsoft announces “Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024” during their Xbox showcase in June 2023 → the existing naming scheme is already broken, because usually the title had the next year in it → there is no way to release it after (effectively) November 2024 without looking like massive clowns

The game would likely have been postponed into 2025, considering that even on what we can assume is crunch-like pressure, it took weeks to deal with critical bugs, if not the hard-coded release date made by marketing a year and a half earlier

But hey, did I mention Football Manager 25 in this thread as another example of why this is a pitfall? Because that comparison aged even better with today’s announcement

I appreciate all the work they do but essentially they bit of more than they can chew.

Meh, I’ve set a 300GB cache and still see assets and airplanes popping up progressively, and the whole time the experience is enormously less fluid than 2020. I would exchange a couple more minutes of loading time for a more fluid experience every day.

And while there was a mention to the tree size, almost no mention to the excessive amount of trees (even in areas where the sat imagery only shows a discolored green patch, ad they’re mountain bushes).

Its not about the format so, it’s more about the content. I expected more specific things and less general takes after a two hour stream. ATC for example, which apparently will meet minimally reasonable behavior (as in not asking you to climb to FL120 when you’re 300ft above runway) in SU3, but who knows.

By the way, someone knows if showing ILS frequencies in the EFB for airports which don’t have a LIDO chart is already in the wishlist? SADF for example, but there are lots. The EFB only shows comms frequencies, but not ILS or LOC frequencies.

Forgive my language in advance, but I’m already exhausted from putting so much energy into having a perfect sim and having Asobo do lalalalalalalalala.

My opinion? My opinion is that I’m starting to think that they’re not going to do anything similar to what 2020 is offline, the reality that I see from here to the near future is that:

You have a bad connection: you’re screw*d

You have an internet outage: you’re screw*d and we won’t let you play.

Our servers are saturated: you’re screw*d and take that, invisible planes, cardboard airplane cabins, terrain with PS1 textures, non-existent airports.

Solution by Asobo: Like parrots: Rolling cache, rolling cache, rolling cache

The reality of 2020:

You have a bad connection: you can choose to turn off photogrammetry and fly with a basic world.

You have an internet outage: Don’t worry, we don’t prevent you from playing offline.

Our servers are overloaded: You can choose which online services to turn off to have a better experience.

Asobo’s solution: A 60gb offline patch and part of the main installation for airplanes and the 40k+ airports, in 150gb.

I hope I’m wrong, but if the “under investigation” of Make cloud streaming optional is finally to download airplanes or airports and if you have an internet outage and it kicks you out of the game, it’s going to be a s*itty solution.

Box art for MFS24

Box art for Company of Heroes 3

One says required internet while the other doesn’t say anything about internet connection required. I hope offline gaming for MFS24 will still be an option in the future…

Edit: yes, the actual game case does say required Internet but I’m just talking about the online box art

I remember Neumann himself clarified that those 18000 included duplicates, etc, so you’re likely correct

I see this argument being delivered quite a lot, but do people really fly 2020 offline? If I have interenet issues or they have servers issues I simply find something else to do, because 2020 is not worth it for me without weather and sattelite data. The offline textures are so horrible I’d rather fly in FSX :joy:

I’m not saying streaming in 2024 is not a problem, I just don’t see a huge difference in using 2020 over 2024 without internet.

Please tell me that I missed the part about stability issues for xbox users on SU1 beta. I was half listening at work so I could have very well missed it…

I could be wrong, but I thought the Xbox focus was on LoD & Quick Resume and didn’t mention the CTD issues people are reporting in the beta forums.

I just don’t recall any depth of conversation on the Xbox stability issues.

That is insane, I noticed they were focusing on all the bugs. How can they focus on the bugs when we can’t even finish a full flight? I hope all the CTDs are happening because it’s a beta version and they have it figured out with the SU1 release but i’m not that optimistic considering all the issues we’ve already seen up to this point.

My take on these Dev Q&As is they are so overwhelmed by questions that many of them get either lost in translation or lost in the chaos of trying to answer everything all at once.

I really appreciate their engaging us this way, but I truly feel they would be able to communicate so much more with so much less effort/words if they just engaged us here.

The information that I glean from the very brief conversations I have with Matt at Working Title on this forum or WT’s Discord is extremely helpful and informative.

For reasons I just haven’t heard, I do not know why they don’t, at least, try to engage us here and see how that works out.

There is simply way more going on with this sim. You can’t stuff it all into one 2 hour session where questions are shotgunned at the three of them and where they must come up with answers on-the-fly for a live audience. That is difficult for the most media savvy people on earth. It just leaves so much left unsaid.

Where I am going with all of this is that the Xbox CTD issue has to be on their radar (if it isn’t, then they really aren’t reading the Xbox Beta Stability threads) and just because it wasn’t mentioned in the stream doesn’t mean they aren’t working on it.

It would just be so helpful if someone was tasked to communicate with us more than once a month for a limited time period on a stream. People love to use the excuse that this is “the most complex piece of software ever created in the entire history of ever!”. If that is even anything close to the truth then it needs a complex communication strategy to go with it.

Given that the public release is relatively CTD-free and we only encountered frequent CTDs in beta, I’m optimistic that they have a good frame of reference where to land the SU1 release candidate for Series X (and no idea really about Series S, but that’s just me posting here). Now I am posting this - hopefully - shortly before we get the next beta release which might be an RC, so for sure I just jinxed us all on console LOL! Good flying today folks!
