Fix Cloud Density and any Resulting Effects (wing fade)

Well msfs has that, just got downgraded/degrated tremendously with SU7 which is probably due to xbox stability and performance and llive weather. You can still use a custom preset/custom weather and set the density and itll be much much better

it is baffling that 3 years after su7 and the clouds issues are still all there, including the now super rare lightings. Yes I hope the new version 2024 will bring back those glory days but, in the last two trailers the clouds looks the same
just cumulus clouds

I’m sure I’m not alone in considering this a make-or-break item for my interest in FS2024.

In fact, I don’t really see much attraction in most of the other features announced thus far.

Missions, Better Scenery
That’s cool and all, I guess

But if something so fundamental as the sky itself gets neglected yet again, it’s all for naught.

Ideally, the requirement for outright perfection (probably unattainable) can be waived by ensuring that 3rd Party devs have full SDK access to control the weather from horizon to horizon.

Community Heads, PLEASE, Make sure this message hits home all the way up to whomever decides on priorities -I speak for those who have stopped playing due to frustration from this!

I’m sorry, but no.

Many very relevant threads have been merged into this one, effectively turning it into a “all that’s wrong with the weather system” cry for help style topic.

The title, at present, is really quite misleading and understates the elephant in the room problem that is the frankly unacceptable state of the live weather engine in MS2020.

These are issues that have degraded the sim since SU5. These threads have been popping up time and again, and they often get merged into some other quasi-related “something about the weather” thread.

Now, if the idea is really to merge all weather-related requests into one big ball of customer dissatisfaction, you’ll find that you end up with a massive ~4k votes for:
“Major overhaul needed for Live Weather in the sim and allow full SDK access for addon devs to improve it further! (or do it all for you)”

This is not off topic. At least, it wouldn’t have been in the original thread that got fused into this. But now, who knows? There have been at least 3 different topics merged here that were not covered under a “wing fade effect” request.

Case in point: The OP at the head of this thread was originally about the apparent zero-density of exclusively cotton-puff type clouds in Live Weather. It was merged with “wing fade” and for some reason, carried that title instead of the OP’s

This is related subject matter, but not for this sim. It’s XP11 with Xenviro. The very first few seconds you can see the winglets obscured by differing amounts.

From what I have seen there, the visual effect is not in place when viewed from the outside, and no matter how far away the plane is it is still not obscured, but it did appear to be from inside looking out. EDIT: Just found a video of a later version, and the plane does disappear into the clouds when moving away. No wing shots sadly.

Maybe this is possible in MSFS at some point, either natively, or via a third party app like Rex.

Hi @Moach6908, the 2 topics merged together to form this one were ‘Wing Fade Effect when flying through clouds’ and a Bug Report topic about live weather cloud density being too low. The lack of wing fade is caused by the low density so they were merged as they are caused by the same underlying problem.

There are many other weather topics in the Official Microsoft Flight Simulator > Wishlist category, including several for cloud formations and various weather phenomenon. There isn’t currently an ‘all that’s wrong’ topic

You can find these other topics here: https://forums.flightsimulator.com/tags/c/official/wishlist/163/clouds and https://forums.flightsimulator.com/tags/c/official/wishlist/163/weather

I’m sorry but my post in ‘low density cloud’ bug report concerned high altitude clouds no longer being thick and dense as they were for the sims first eight or so months. it had nothing to do with, and I don’t think has anything to do with, either the wing fade effect or the general cloud density issue. Higher clouds were altered either in an attempt to create cirrus or as an unintended side effect to the fixes of higher altitude temperature errors. I really don’t know.
But continually lumping everything into one wishlist item isnt going to help get things fixed (that were at one time not even broken).

Why is it that other unintended consequences of ‘fixes’ have been fixed but these cloud issues are treated almost as if they are blasphemy of some kind. Its an issue - a group of issues actually - and some of us would like to see them addressed in a respectful manner.
Thank you for listening. Please listen.

Hoping to see clouds that look closer to this one day: MASSIVE Sound & Short Takeoff - United 757-200 San Fransisco - YouTube

Reminds me of the first year of MSFS.

Yes indeed

Agreed, we did have clouds like that until they destroyed them in SU5, replacing most clouds with towering CBs and merging individual thin cloud layers into one large layer.

Yep! And we had cloud turbulence back then also, with SU5 all disappeared!

I still suspect that was a performance thing. If it were a simple bug,you wouldn’t think it would take years to revert back to the way it was.

True, there are several other much simpler issues, such as GUI issues that would be easy to fix too, but weather is more important than the wrong box being highlighted when entering text.

An update from SU15 beta:
I’ve tested the sim in varying weather conditions during the SU15 beta, and there seems to be some tweaking of cloud density (ie I am seeing less transparent clouds now).
Let’s keep this thread active and hope Asobo listens to us folks! Wing fade would totally transform this sim!

Hopefully they are

I’m in the beta as well but the issue still persists. Seb said the live weather team would be working on a fix but I haven’t seen anything in the release notes related to it so far. Is this going to be a server side fix? SU15 is about to drop and 2024 will be out before anything else drops anyway.

There’s no difference in the clouds with SU15. They still look very poor and unrealistic a lot of the time in terms of colour, density, shape, and resolution.

Wait, they claim to have a full “live weather team”!? The same “team” that couldn’t, in more than one full year (probably a lot more) bring back lightnings and thuders!?
We’re in good hands then.
Not surprised though, it’s been now more than 3 months that the simulator won’t start in full screen as it used by default. Must be very very very hard to fix that too. They should build a team to investigate that too, then add it to the infinite list of bugs and whatsoever that they’re “investigating” since day one. OR, considering FS2020 sold more than ten million copies around the world, they could give us a NEW simulator, not based on a version more than 10 years old. Imagine how many teams they’d need to do that though.

That’s already been fixed for a while in SU15 beta.

I asked about the issue for the upcoming Q&A stream. You guys should do the same
