Floatplanes support

Great idea from OP that would be awesome to have more float plane linked features

I was just reading through this and realized it was created over 2 years ago and still nothing. Nice

Apparently, the devs are still learning and trying to figure out ground physics to make aircraft behave even remotely realistically on the ground. Hopefully, float planes will receive the love and attention they deserve sometime in the near future.

When starting on a water runway it would be very nice to have an “anchor” command that will keep the plane at its current position, so we can perform a cold and dark start without the plane drifting to shore, a dock, buildings or the open seas.

Thanks for reading!

There have been some other wishlists for this.

The simple solution is to use ‘active pause’. Yes, really! It’s probably the only time the feature has any value.

All active pause does is freeze the aircraft in place…pretty much like an anchor. Perfect for when you are doing preflight and engine start from a water dock, as all that functionality is totally uneffected by the badly mislabled ‘active pause’. Once you are ready to cast off, unfreeze…sorry ‘unpause’, and you are good to go.

They should just create a new icon for it and all it ‘Anchor’

In general active pause wrecks havoc on many payware planes, you toggle it and when you untoggle it anything can happen from total catastrophic failure to nothing at all.

Really? I know it’s impossible to use in the air and even on the ground with the engines running is high risk as inertial forces build up. But I didn’t know it could actually interfere with the systems.

Returning to you wish…there is a simevent called ‘freeze lat_long’ or something similar. Having that available to bind to a key through the control options would work - I use SPAD.next to bind it to a switch as my ‘anchor’ in float planes.

Otherwise it’s more down to the aircraft Dev. I understand the DHC-2 has an anchor code d in?

It would be nice to tie down your float plane so it doesn’t drift away with the wind.

Yeah, tie-down and/or anchor (like the Beaver can) for all float planes would be great!

Just use active pause. It’s it’s one clear use

  • it freezes your position in the (edit) horizontal plane but nothing else. Like an anchor.

as a workaround, right?

Not in functional terms, no. (With a caveat) I say this having scripted an ‘anchor’ function for several of the float planes using the freeze lat-long sim event.

Pressing the active pause button has identical effect it’s probably the same simevent and why it’s no use in the air as it doesn’t actually pause the SIM, just freezes the aircraft position.

This works just the same as a simulated anchor.

The caveat is that just as with a real anchor, your position is fixed to one point and the aircraft will swing into the wind (there being no tides or current) around it’s anchor point.

For being tied up alongside a jetty active pause is less realistic as then you would have fore and aft lines to hold you alongside to prevent any swinging. Or in sim terms have the aircraft heading frozen as well as the lat-long. Active pause won’t do that for you.

If you want a switch to flick in the VC or some animations, then that’s more of a question for the aircraft devs.

I did not know about the Beaver’s anchor! How do you drop the anchor?

EDIT: Found it! Have to use the iPad.

I would love to see MS implement splash effects for all of the seaplanes in the sim. If Got Friends can do that, I’m sure it would be no trouble for the Asobo team. The only difficulty might be that each airplane would need it’s own. It looks so real when landing the Beaver and seeing those big splashes and spray behind the airplane. Maybe it can be done for 2024.

Hello, supporting all that is said, in particular “Anchor” for the float planes in MSFS 2024.
