For Xbox Series X players with 120hz TV

As I continue to get to know this new monitor and new console, I’ve discovered something else which is interesting. When I have the option to “Allow HDR10” enabled and a 60Hz refresh set in the XBX TV/monitor settings, MSFS will ignore the output resolution set at 1440p and output it as 4K anyway.

I discovered this after resetting my monitor’s settings back to defaults. The LG monitor has a warning that pops up if it’s receiving a signal which isn’t the recommended native 1440p. I had suppressed this message about a week or two ago. After resetting the monitor, I got this as MSFS was loading:

After the sim finished loading, the monitor’s “Information” item also confirmed it was receiving a 4K signal:

After some experimentation with combinations of enabling/disabling the “Allow 4K” and “Allow HDR10” options, with console restarts in between, the factor when running at 60Hz refresh rate was having both Allow 4K and Allow HDR10 enabled. With the console configured this way MSFS ignores the 1440p configured output and outputs at 4K instead.

If just “Allow 4K” is enabled (“Allow HDR10” is disabled) when configured for 1440p/60Hz then MSFS does output at 1440p.

If both “Allow 4K” and “Allow HDR10” are enabled but refresh is set to 120Hz, MSFS also outputs at 1440p when the console is configured for 1440p and it will output at 4K if the console is configured for 4K. The monitor is native 1440p but will accept a 4K/60Hz signal and presumably down-samples in this configuration.

So you have to give up 4k to go to 120HZ? I could of sworn it gave me the option to push both.

I’m not sure. My monitor only supports 4K @ 60Hz and is only HDMI 2.0 - to get a true 27" 4K native monitor with HDMI 2.1 was out of reach cost wise at present. I could be that MSFS will run 4K/120 when combined with a monitor or TV with HDMI 2.1.

I think I tried running 4k 120hz hdr and got more stuttering and tearing. I can understand a fps boost at a lower resolution

1 found the same thing. Working perfectly now.

It’s a broken mess that has never been implemented correctly.

July 21’. Lol. Pathetic.

Well i do notice at arm’s lenth a 55" tv at 4k in this game showssome shading in gradient dots, where likely at 1440 its a smooth transition. I’ll have to try it out. Im pretty sure it flashed 4k 120 hdr on the tv, which i can’t image coming out of that little box. I can see 1440 with vrr getting smoother, and a at 4k it may be too high a resolution so close I can see the graphical makeup of the individual textures themselves. This aint no side scroller game where you can push ultra hd textures on everything. Probably looks more smoothly shaded and a big fps jump. Most high end computers cant display full glory on a 50 inch monitor.

Ok, what I got out of trying modes albeit one circuit each at my local FBO(KHEF) 172 steam to eliminate variables from 3rd party and there’s a lot of nice effects on the instrument glass:

120HZ, VRR no hdr 1440. Seemed OK but a whole lot of meh, too ugly for me on a 55

120HZ VRR HDR10 4K looked great, but chugged as much or more than 60HZ, but everything did look more detailed. Was using the 172 over enhanced scenery KIAD and saw some minor artifacts and some labels jumping and other stuff. May need a full flight again to re assess. Did not have any visual tearing, again the infamous NXi being removed was the only difference than before, wasn’t even using a glass aircraft.

60HZ VRR HRD10 4K, seemed a bit more smooth, my usual mode so hard to judge with 100 hours staring at the same imagry. DID seem more detailed at 120HZ.

All the stuff i see on youtube with 120HZ are on displays that can’t even offer the option at 4K. Maybe on a smaller monitor I can swing it but on a 55 no way. At 4k HDR feels like I can lick the glass on the instruments, don’t think I’m giving that up.

Unless 4K HDR 120 all that and a bag of chips mode works out better with a full cold reboot then switching between modes I’m in the 60hz camp. Will need to test it out though in the outback or Alaska too. Will test more but no immediate super frame rates appear magically in 120 4k though. Need to run an hour or so flight to 10K altitude and down over mixed cities/familiar 3rd party scenery and aircraft that’s taxing like the Kodiak.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but is it still the case to use 60hz over 120hz in the Xbox series x display settings.

I have an lg cx, I’ve always used 120hz and VRR, so was just wondering what the consensus is now, leave it or try 60hz?

I leave the Samsung Q80 in Game Mode, which is Freesync. Probably the same as VRR? Works great, just let the TV work with the Series X.

I tried 60hz and maybe a one off as haven’t tried it again yet but I didn’t get the stuttering splash screen at the start before you press play/start.

Put your Xbox on 4k and 60hz. Turn off VRR.

If you have ‘deblur/dejudder’ settings on your tv, put them on max. And make sure Game Mode on the tv is off if you have it.

This provides the smoothest flying experience with everything fluid.

Reset the Xbox when you change the settings and fire up the sim.

I may try VRR off, not sure I want to change too much though as I use the same picture mode settings on my PS5 via a hdmi switch.

I see what you mean. It sounds counter intuitive to turn VRR off but it made a big difference.
