FPS performance - VRAM bug?

Yeah, I have the 3070ti with 8GB and have to be very careful. I had to remove the custom SFO airport and I ground to a halt on landing. Wish I has the 10Gb but it seems at every level you can always use more VRAM and get more detail… that is I am afraid logical. At least it scales up and down logically.

The aircraft chosen plays a role too. The B-787 chews up 1 GB more VRAM than the C-172. Unfortunately I have to watch this… birthday in June and maybe will be able to upgrade.

I got a kick out of flying last couple days (I am a retired pilot) and this is the approach into SFO in the nasty weather we had. I was amazed at the AP crab that the 787 put in with the crosswinds and how it straightened out perfectly on landing. Maybe the VRAM has problems by somebody did the flight models correctly.

Hi!! After a few weeks I am back.
In the meantime i upgraded my system with a m.2 nvme ssd (where i reinstalled win 11 pro) so I can use microsoft direct storage (it seems that lot of data bypasses the cpu with a result of a reduced workload).
Then i changed the gpu going from a 3060ti with 8gb to a 7900 xtx with 24 gb.

Just tried msfs today with 4k res, 180 tlod/olod, fenix a320, mixed settings (some high, some ultra,a few medium), ultra traffic, live weather and it was butter.
I am still tweaking the whole system but so far I am very happy.

Is this supported in MSFS?

No, not as far as I’ve ever seen/heard.

I would hope with 24gb of VRAM you could run full ultra - what’s your performance like on that preset? (Which I assume is what it uses if you select the default settings)

And not even that is enough…
I’ve 16 GB 4080 Super, Munich (EDDM) mix between high and ultra, TAA, FG = On, flying the DA62, screen with 5120x1440 (so less than 4K) and I still get max VRAM. No CTDs any more (actual SU1 Beta 3), but it doesn’t load the textures of the traffic. Until I’m very very close. So it looks like the Airport is just empty…
No mods active.

That’s just bull****. No mods, more than ideal specs , not even everything set to Ultra and can’t even play in less than 4K…
Asobo HAS TO fix this!

Very disappointing. Might as well hack away on my 8GB rig… at least the hacking keeps me amused… but I understand what you mean about the textures. Landing at SFO I can barely make TLOD and OLOD 100 each and the buildings are mostly blank boxes. If you have trouble with 16, what is the point of spending that $ to get a little more texture? They really need to fix this.

Of course I can get detail at altitude. For you non-Californians this is a winter view of the West Shore of Lake Tahoe with ice on some of the lakes and Emerald Bay. Sorta realistic… like to fly from Reno to SFO.

That’s normal. I mean the maximum available shared VRAM from the system RAM scales up with the maximum RAM installed. I’ve also got from 32 to 64 Gbytes but TBH haven’t noticed too much improvement. The used shared VRAM is the same and without tweaking the VRAM sensitive settings the performance loss is also pretty similar. Might happen a bit less time but no serious changes.

Will test today different presets and post screenshots.
Anyway, i managed the settings (med/high/ultra) after i saw a comparison video on yt where some settings on medium/high gave similar visuals as ultra but with less performance hit.

It must be supported.
It is a windows 11 feature and supported by amd and nvidia.
Fs 2024 is produced by microsoft so it must be supported.

A quick chat with ChatGPT reveals that Direct Storage has to be supported by the game itself. And there is no official statement that MSFS or MSFS 2024 support this. Generally an nVME drive should give a siginificant performance uplift.
When I upgraded from 32 GB RAM to 64 GB I definitely recognized a boost as well. Not exactly FPS but a more stable and fluid experience I’d say. Further MSFS 2024 with 3rd party addons and medium to high settings can exceed 32 Gigs easily as of now.

Here I am with screenshots:

I have to upgrade my ram and push my 5800x3d further. GPU is having a cup of tea now :joy:

And yet it is not.

Every day still getting this

question, i have a 4080s and 16gb ram, why am i seinng a max of 14.3gb vram? is this due to system?

I had the similar issue and format the windows 11 and clean install the OS and MSFS 2024 today. However, I choose Nvidia driver 566.36 this time. In my previous, I install the lastest version of Nvidia driver.

My specification is 7800x3d, 64GB, rtx 4080s, QHD.
MSFS graphic settings is TAA + FG and almost ultra with Terrain LOD 200, Objects LOD 100 or 150.

Aftter the clean installation of OS and MSFS2024, it works fine.

Asobo said they will make it more clear in SU1 or SU2 (can’t remember exaclty). However, it means the sim is claiming 14 GB from your 16 GB card. In Task Manager you might get a clearer picture. I have found that with background apps like BATC and SimToolkitPro alone I got 2 GB used. I guess thats also something to keep in mind that not only MSFS might like our precious VRAM.

Ultra preset on 4K is fine… if it wasn’t for the fact that you have twice the stated ideal spec VRAM! Spare a thought for those of us that “only” have 33% more than the ideal amount!

Finally the 5090 is here.
It replaces the 4080!

i dont know, but, i don’t think it is, given that the mainthread still comes to a halt when loading big assets (what we call a stutter) that doesnt look like its using directstorage

i should think that is by design, no one software can use 100% of the memory available, otherwise the computer would stop working, it seems msfs leaves around 15% of the vram to be used by the os and other software

I would have thought the same, but the issue I have is that when I’m flying in a low-demand scenario (152 in a rural area, etc) I see a little over 15 of my total 16GB of VRAM available. However, as soon as I put demand on the system (airliner at a handcrafted airport, etc) the available VRAM drops in the 13GB range. So when I need it most, the least of it is available.
