FPS performance - VRAM bug?

I’m pretty sure the VRAM performance issues are not related to what brand of hardware you have. Claiming otherwise without actual telemetry or data to back it up is not productive. Let’s focus reporting what we actually are experiencing and not arguing with eachother.

I posted the following in another thread and I meant to post in this thread:

It seems like KJFK Gate C1004 is a nuisance. I agree. I actually went slightly over my Vram parked at this gate. But my frame rates remained around 30fps although I had to wait a few seconds for the GPU to get there.

Zadma, I set things up as you suggested. I used the Ultra Preset and made sure everything was on Ultra including texture resolution. I also emptied my community folder. I restarted the sim. Then I started the flight parked at gate C1004 in the Neo V2.

Quick Specs:
i9-14900KF
4080 Super
32gb DDR5 MT5600 Ram.
1000 Watt Power Supply

Following is with just TAA on:

DLSS on AUTO:

And finally DLSS on AUTO with FG turned on:

Panning around was fairly stubborn but I was surprised it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

Obviously this airport needs to be optimized along with others.

Was thinking about this more - I wonder if you’re not going as high on VRAM because you’re also out of RAM. I’ve got 16GB of VRAM and 64GB RAM, and at that gate on those settings the sim will attempt to use as much as 20GB VRAM - maybe because I’ve got the headroom on the RAM side so it spills over into that (slower) shared memory.

I run over retail budget sometimes but I think it is better with the latest build. Task manager always indicates lower ram usage. As I recall this was also mentioned in the latest Dev Stream and I think it was Marshall that brought it up.

I should have checked the peak memory usage with hardware monitor and when it settled down, checked it with task manager. Based on what I see, when ram usage settled down, it would have been around 27gb in task manager.

I do plan on upgrading to 64gb if the SU2 doesn’t improve mem usage.

Yeah just trying to figure out why your VRAM usage is so low comparatively

Sadly, I don’t think it’s that simple. I’ve got 16GB of VRAM and (as of about a week ago), 64GB of system RAM, but I’ve never seen the same crippling VRAM overflows that you and others have experienced. Yes, the system will try to use all 16GB I have when I first load in, but that VRAM use typically declines slowly over a few minutes to create some headroom and never goes back up to the previous high.

I’m currently mid-flight in FS2020, but later this afternoon I’ll attempt to load into that gate in the default Gaya JFK and see what I see in the current FS2024 SU1 Beta build.

I’ll be honest, reducing Texture Resolution from Ultra to High, disabling Raytraced Shadows, and using FSLTL instead of default traffic gets me performance that I cannot complain about.

Worst case scenario, if this is the way it is for 2024, I can survive. I know this isn’t the case for all, though.

Hey, i am experiencing the same as reported. I just got a new PC. RTX 4080S, 7800X3D & DDR5 32GB (2560x1440). MSFS 2020 works like a charm. On Ultra settings and very good FPS with heavy 3rd party add-ons. I just bought MSFS 2024 and i get «OVER RETAIL BUDGET» with VRAM/RAM maxed out. Drops between 90-12 FPS. The 1st person camera also made it worse. I am very frustrated after using my hard earned money on this.

My “workaround” has been to reduce Texture Resolution (I go to High and that’s sufficient) and use FSLTL (or no traffic at all). I also turn off RT Shadows, but that’s probably mostly because AMD doesn’t handle RT very well. Those things bring me from ~10fps to +40fps in the worst of conditions, and +60fps in the best.

Think im gonna stick w/ FS20 until SU2

Totally valid option - though I would set low expectations for SU2. By the sounds of it, they aren’t acknowledging/haven’t identified core issues to fix yet, just talk of optimizing overly-demanding airports - which is a good start, but certainly not the full fix.

Just dropping this here

I’m confused about what this link is about. Would you care to elaborate what I’m supposed to be looking for?

Does this band aid fix the sudden fps drop mid flight due to VRAM MSFS 2024 amateur design?

Sorry, but your issue definitely sounds unrelated as your VRAM never exceeds budget, and that is when VRAM-related severe FPS-drops occur. It was already established that your issue sounds like it’s tied to CPU handling.

Have you checked your CPU temps in those moments where utilization is at 100% and frames drop significantly?

As I posted a few posts above yours, the DEV FPS counter does not report RAM usage accurately. I would suggest using HW Monitor because it gives you all the information about your system that is available. But even if you compare your RAM usage with task manager, I am sure task manager will indicate lower usage.

Vram over retail budget mostly happens at some of the airports designed by GAYA. But as others have said it goes beyond only that and hopefully will be optimized with SU2.

I get much better performance with MSFS2024 than MSFS2020, but I too set my texture resolution on high. Also TLOD 200 and OLOD 200.

If you are using the latest Nvidia driver that can also be causing reduction in performance. Personally, I am using the latest driver but many are finding the 566.14 driver works best for them.

I understand your frustrations but I wouldn’t walk away so fast from MSFS2024. I use both sims depending on what I feel like :slightly_smiling_face:

Not specifically VRAM related. But more performance related. When using MSI Afterburner with the Power sensor enabled, you will get decreased performance. So turn it off for best performance.

Also when using ASUS motherboard with Aura Sync (RGB). Change this to Static instead of Color Change or turn off completely via BIOS.

Surely you can’t be serious?

I’ve had both. And my AMD chip performs better ten fold.

Like you, I have always been Intel until my last 2 builds.

Reason I moved from Intel was the horrible experience with my i9 11900k - granted not the best CPU Intel put on the market but it was horrific from day 1

Hey I just got MSFS 2024 and experiencing performance issues. I have 3060 ti 8GB, i5 13600kf and 32 gb ram, running at 1440p. I’m currently trying to figure out what settings to use. I start at the low preset at denver in the fenix a320 and Im getting pretty good fps while in the aircraft around 30-40, when i go into drone mode and don’t look at the airport i get 70+. I bump up my preset up to medium and my fps is destroyed, getting around 10-15 looking in my aircraft and looking at the airport scenery and then instantly when I look away i get maybe 40-50. I try and go back to the low preset and my FPS is still 10-15. I have to restart the sim to get back to my original fps on the low preset. I’m also getting a peaked over retail budget on the vram when I go to medium.

Welcome! The long, short of this is everyone is waiting for SU2 for Vram optimizations. Hopefully beta testing will begin early March and no one knows when SU2 final will be released. Even people with 4090’s have Vram issues.

The only other suggestion I have is if you are using the latest Nvidia driver revert back to 566.14. The latest driver is causing performance issues for some. Make sure to use [Display Driver Uninstaller] (Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) download version 18.1.1.3) if you revert back.

You are doing everything right by experimenting. Turning off Ray Tracing might also help.
