FPS performance - VRAM bug?

that’s odd, when i had 8gb vram i always saw it showing 7gb available, sometimes it showed 6.98 or something, but it was always around 7, no matter what scenario

i do run a debloated windows installation though

Yeah and absolutely nothing in the background changes for it to drop from ~15 to ~13 other than the demand put on it by the aircraft/airport I choose.

That’s normal. With my 5090 and 32GB VRAM I also see “only” 30GB in-game.

I also have 64GB DDR5 RAM, but since my 9800x3D has iGPU it takes 2GB of that amount.

On a sidenote, it’s generally recommended to disable the internal GPU in BIOS if one doesn’t need it and you obviously don’t. If you leave it enabled, even while not having a cable attached to the iGPU output, the CPU will need some power and internal management resources. It’s not a big thing, but just saying…

I don’t know if what I’m experiencing is the same issue but I have this weird stuttering every few seconds during flight, the sim is butter smooth but every 10-30 seconds it will noticeably drop FPS as if the sim is loading something in the background, and then the FPS returns to normal again. This happens both on the ground and in the air but especially in the air and especially when looking around in the cockpit but also when not turning the camera.

However I’ve also noticed that when switching to external view the FPS issues stop, and when switching back to the cockpit view the issue starts again which makes me suspect a memory leak.

I’ve tried it with both the live build and SU1 beta (I feel like the issue is slightly mitigated by SU1) and it persists.

Yes. Already did. Not that I am in short of VRAM with my 5090. :upside_down_face:

Hi, birthday coming up soon and wonder if you have your complete build specs somewhere.

Hi,
Have done some testing with my 3071ti and the cockpit view uses noticeably more VRAM than the chase camera. Assume same for you… after all has to draw all the instruments.

I am impressed. Any regrets on the selections? No liquid cooling? Was worried about that with the 5090. I do not have it in my current rig.

No not at all. There isn’t any better to get right now.

Do not need liquid cooling? Might get better performance and overclock? Naive questions but wondering.

9800X3D runs relatively cool - I have a $35 Thermalright air cooler on mine and I’ve never seen it above 65C even during stressful loads.

Not needed. It runs very cool. Even with an overclock on the CPU. Did an undervolt on the 5090 so that runs very cool as well with a lot less power usage.

No he wont get it back, igpu uses system ram, the difference in VRAM is due to all other processes running plus the OS.

An issue I have (and this could just be the way the MSFS FPS tool reports the data) is that my available VRAM always drops whenever I’m in a scenario that needs more of it, with no changes happening in the background. Cessna 152 at Point Nemo, it will always show me as having ~15.12GB of VRAM available. Airbus at JFK will show me as having ~13.25GB of VRAM available, all in the same session with nothing changing in the background.

Does it seem fair to assume then that this is a result of the memory leak Asobo is fixing in SU2? I’d assume 24GB is plenty? I haven’t actually checked how much the sim uses though.

There is no memory leak, at least not as far as I understand memory leaks, and as far as Asobo has said. According to them, the issue is solely a result of poorly optimized handcrafted airports.

I don’t know if that’s the SOLE cause, but it’s one they’ve identified. There are plenty of things in the sim (and in any other graphically-intensive application) that utilizes VRAM for asset storage. I still believe there is an issue specific to FS2024 that is causing VRAM to get filled but not purged. Corrupt textures or shaders, perhaps. Maybe something they are working with Nvidia to identify a permanent fix to prevent the kinds of unrecoverable VRAM overflows people have been experiencing, because that just isn’t normal for any sim, game or program. VRAM should be purged as soon as people leave the sceneries and circumstances that created the overflow, but for those affected it isn’t. That makes me further believe there’s something Nvidia should be able to help handle on the driver end of things.

What are your 5090 temps and what voltage are you running it, if you don’t mind?

I have every intention of acquiring one when I can get my hands on one. I only want the FE and have struck out both times Best Buy has offered them.
