FPS performance - VRAM bug?

I’m also affected. My rig: Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RTX4080 16G, 64GB DDR5-6000 RAM

I always fly the Fenix A320, worked perfect in 2020 with 60-80fps 4k ultra and frame genration. (no DLSS) Even on busy airports solid 60fps.

In 2024 on high settings my VRAM is sometimes completely overwhelmed and I’m getting 15FPS or lower. Ultra is not possible at all.
Yesterday I spawned at LFMN and got very nice 70FPS on high settings for the first time in the new sim, today I got 6FPS at the same position with the same settings. 17,5GB/15GB VRAM according to in-sim FPS counter. I changed to low settings and DLSS and STILL only 28FPS! (Yes, textures only change by restart so still high). What the?

I have to choose low or medium setting now just to get a little VRAM headroom.
Sorry, RTX4080 is the OPTIMUM GPU according to the system requirements - It’s a joke I have to fly on low/med settings. Please fix the vram usage!

Yeah, I oberserve this too with my 4070ti sometimes, even in other games.
It’s usually a sign that the memory or the memory bus of the card is over capacity I think.

Just to reply myself, seems I found at least MY ISSUE, I recommend other to check their PCI-E lane actual config for you GPU, mine was 8x instead of 16x. I use a 3.0 PCI so that was a bottleneck, performance is not perfect because I’m trying on HIGH and my GPU is not that fast. I suggest you use GPU-Z to check that if your config is ok. Mine was related to how I installed a secondary NVME sharing the PCI-Lane with GPU

After that change I noticed the bottleneck is now mostly related to mainThread or CPU, which used to be during loading times and the GPU is mostly ok

My best guess is that even if the PCI-E lane limitation is not causing a huge FPS drop in most scenarios the extra lanes are being used to transfer data (CPU, Memory) and that is somehow a huge bottleneck for this sim, so I suggest other check that settings, ensure you PCI-E is set to 16x for your main GPU as it seems to have fixed for me, maybe others have that and did not notice, I noticed because I was trying to change the shared memory size…

How did you fix this? Did you move the NVME to a different slot?

I don’t think the number of PCIe lanes is a major factor. I have an RTX3080 and I coincidentally checked my setup using GPU-Z a week or so ago. Mine is definitely using all 16 lanes and running out of GPU VRAM still brings my sim to a grinding 4-5 FPS slowdown. I had to change settings to avoid going over the available VRAM limit.

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
• Yes. Unplayable FPS between 8 - 15 due to VRAM.

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• 4070Ti, Triple screen 2560x1440, DLSS

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

We can only hope they put this as a prio and address this problem asap… its happening on whatever resolution we play and whatever setting we use…
Of course more if youre on 4k but its illogical with such expensive machines we are limited by optimization

Same Issue… every time with Airliners and big Airports.

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
• Yes

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• Sim runs fine at beginning 150 fps on ultra after switching to menu and starting new flight with different plane fps drops to 10 and nothing helps even changing from frame gen to off antialising vram is just full and is not emptying no matter what. 7800x3d + 4070ti user im running newest dlss.dll

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024:

  • **Version Build Number 1.1.7.0 **

  • Game Platform MS Store

  1. Description of the issue:
When starting the game at first, my FPS starts out fine. However, after about 20 minutes my FPS starts to drop. When I check the performance and load of my PC it looks normal; 80% on my GPU and about 45% on my CPU (this is pretty constant during those 20 minutes) however the weird thing is that the load appears to remain the same however my FPS drops and my GPU temperature as well. Which is weird since it shows it is still at 80% load…
I thought it might be a heat related problem but that was also not the case. My temps stay below limits and when the FPS drops so do my temps.

  2. Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?
    Yes and yes.

:white_check_mark: FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you? (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)
Every time

:white_check_mark: REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue.

  1. I just played the game.
  2. I used the Cessna 172
  3. Departed from Sion in Switzerland
  4. Might be related to flying in a new area?

:white_check_mark: YOUR SETTINGS: High-end default settings

If the issue still occurs with no mods and add-ons, please continue to report your issue. If not, please move this post to the User Support Hub.

  1. What peripherals are you using, if relevant:
    Not relevant.

  2. [PC Only] Are you using Developer Mode or have you made any changes to it?
    No

  3. [PC, MSFS 2020 Only] Are you using DX11 or DX12?
    DX11 (I think, didn’t change anything)

  4. [PC Only] Many issues may be due to an outdated graphics card. Please state your Graphics Card Driver Manufacturer (NVIDIA, Intel, AMD) and Version :
    Nvidia version 566.14

  5. [PC Only] What other relevant PC specs can you share?

Maybe check memory usage. If there’s a leak it may do something like that. I’ve flown for hours and had no issue but I have 64GB of RAM so…

PC specs?
It may be due to overheating of your GPU and consequent thermal throttling. If you have nVidia (but probably also AMD) the GPU load always appears to be maxed out, but the frequency and voltage drop depending on the load and the temperature.
FS 2024 is DX12 only by the way.

Memory usage looks fine. I have 32 GB.

I have a Ryzen 5 5600X, 32GB RAM, and RTX3070 running windows 10 pro.
I checked the temperature, but the temperature never rises above 80 C. So I don’t expect thermal throttling.

same thing happens to me.

specs: amd ryzen 7940hs, rtx 4070 laptop 8 gb, 16 gb ram

Same for me. I start with 30-40 fps , everything is fine and smooth. But suddenly out of nowhere it drops to 10 - 13 fps and doesn’t recover.
Specs:
OS: Windows 11
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700x
GPU: RTX 2080 Super
RAM: 32GB
Bandwith: 250 Mbps

Same for me I have a Ryzen 9 7900x, RTX3080 12GB, 32GB Ram and performance deteriorates. Performance is not optimal i did noticed I get a high GPU utilization. Even with Frame Gen performance not optimal for game playing.

Since we all have this problem, it looks like the problem is caused by the game. This means we need to wait for an update.
