[Freeware] Cessna 180 Backcountry - 2024 native

I don’t typically promote my addons very much but I am especially proud of how this airplane turned out. I always thought that my freeware Cessna 170b could be converted into a 180 as the real-world enginnering seemed to follow a similar path.

This is a fully-native 2024 aircraft. I have been exploring many of the new features and many are quite subtle but they do make a difference.

This was designed to be a restoration project on an early-model 180 to convert it into a modern bush plane. The wing features a STOL leading edge cuff, wingtips and vortex generators. This is to let you get into steeper angles of attack which will also generate more induced drag which allows you to bleed energy as needed. Couple that with power adjustments and you can have a lot more control when trying to land on a gravel bar or small piece of smooth ground.

It has 29" tundra tires which can handle some pretty rough terrain. And this plane has a float kit so when you need, you can use the floatplane variant to explore even deeper into the backcountry than you can with wheels.

I would love to be able to release a 2020-compatible version but to take advantage of the sim’s new capabilities, I had to use a development process that would make that too difficult and would compromise the quality. Asobo had to make the hard choice to push the sim into the future and move away from some of the legacy techniques. I agree with that choice. It will enable many more advanced addons.

Fabulous! I have wanted a 180 for ages. Can’t wait to try it out later thank you!

Hey, I downloaded this a couple days ago – been wanting a 180 for some nostalgia reasons – and immediately had a couple really nice flights in it. Thanks for the fun plane!

I appreciate your previous creations and thank you for them.

Being an lifelong Alaskan…bush rat, the 180 would be my favorite plane you’ve made. Bummer will never get to try it.

Thanks for the wonderful add-on! Quick question, is the plane supposed to start violently vibrating on the roll axis near to and beyond the max speed? It kinda gets nauseating in VR

I’m looking into this. I think it’s related to fuselage rigidity and from some tests, I think I can remove most of the oscillations.
I have been looking into some other things for an update. Someone asked if the floatplane could have an anchor and you can step out onto the floats. And there is something odd about the gear where it can sink into the ground. So I hope to fix these annoyances.

An anchor would be awesome, and stepping out onto the floats would be really cool, too!
