FS2020 Tree Editor tool

@Op Based on your knowledge of the files, does it seem possible to create new biomes, and/or add models to biomes? Whilst I love the fact that there’s such a huge amount of them - and I know they are going to add more - some of them I’ve seen need a bit of love. Like the desert biomes have a lot of bare ground where I’d expect some very short grass or bushes to be.

Also I’ve noticed in the scenery editor that when we add a vegetation polygon, it’s impossible to scale the trees down below a certain height, they just disappear completely. I wonder if this tool (or changes to the files) could help with this? (I was trying to use some scaled down bushes and trees as stand-in grasses).

@Pantalaimon Short answer is yes we can create new biome rules which is actually added in to the new update of the tool. Long answer is that the list of the eco regions we have are so far the only ones supported but it’s a mighty big list that seems to have them all from what I can tell. The new addition to the tool will allow you to create your own “Biome Rule” as they call it that will allow you to add whatever regions you want to it and set the species of the shrubs/cacti/trees as well as spawn ratio, how many per hectar and the scale factor.

As for scaling them down I’m not too sure how far down they can go before they totally disappear but that also impacts all areas that use that species, so right now there isn’t an easy way to shrink them down and only be for a certain area. Currently it’s sort of an all or nothing situation with what they have given us so far.

For all you super tweakers out there it is now time! Version 1.3.0 of the FS2020 Tree Size Editor is now out and we’ve added Biomes tweaking features! To get to the new Biomes editor simply click on Edit → Biomes in the original tool and you will get a whole new form that allows you to tweak the biomes till your hearts content. Create your own biome rules, add what regions you want in it, add the species of vegetation you want in it, change how many spawn per 2.47 acres and adjust the scaling factor till your hearts content!

For those looking to do minor tweaking don’t worry, you don’t have to create a new biome rule, you can simply edit the existing ones and not even have to touch the advanced tweaking section. Don’t forget to save your changes by clicking on Save changes before closing out the program. All changes are saved to the community folder leaving the original official files intact. Enjoy!

Hi. Thanks for this tool! I’m a tree maker and would like to import my own 3D tree models. I started a thread here with image examples Can the trees be modded? - #2 by Archer374 Is that doable with this tool? Where would I place the models? And do you happen to know the texture rules?

@GeneralDee17 I’ll be honest not sure if we can add new tree models or not. The tool uses the XML files given by Asobo and allows users to easily edit them.

Also, I just wanted to point out that tomorrow you can look forward to a 1.3.1 release. Why? Well, because 1.3.1 will add editing CITY BIOMES! Yup, that’s right, there is a separate file for city biomes and I will be adding an editor for the city biomes as well. @LazyHipp0 I think you might be interested in this one  .

Also on my road map: I want to clean up the original tree editor UI look, so look forward to that in a future release.

Yay!

That probably explains my trouble editing my local biome in the Chicago suburbs, which Asobo believes is some kind of dense pine forest apparently, lol. Nothing beyond tree height and the instances per hectare seems to take, and I was thinking it was either user error, or they’d used a biome that I hadn’t found yet.

Thank you so much for creating such wonderful tool, Yes after I adjusted way Central Park looks “close to” represent the real scale then other reigns lost that fluffy looks, if this CITY BIOMES work it way out, that will be wonderful! Again, thank you for your effort to crate this great editor :star_struck:

Well, I decided to go ahead and knock it out and release it tonight as I know tomorrow here in the US we have Labor Day as a day off for most of us so now everyone can enjoy tweaking it on their day off. If you don’t have the day off tomorrow well, it’ll be here for you ready to go first thing after work .

You might notice, wow this looks exactly like the biomes editor and you’d be correct for the most part. There is 1 small change: Only Artificial Areas can be set to “yes” or “no”, haven’t played around with the option so not sure what it does but hey, we can change it. Not to mention once again make our very own “rules” for eco regions.

Awesome! Thanks!

I’ve already found a cites biome that does what I needed around my town. I just have to figure out what the other biome is that’s used in the surrounding countryside now, and modify that.

I am not sure what i am doing wrong but I can’t open the xml file in the editor.
My path is C:\Users\bijan\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Official\OneStore\fs-base\vegetation and I copied and paste it in the editor but it won’t open it. Keep saying path not found.

You only need the path: C:\Users\bijan\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\

not the path to the actual XML file for it to work  .

That part worked. Thank you, but after I make changes, i cannot save it. It gives error.

What is the error you are getting? Can you post a screenshot of it?

Here…

Hmm It’s saying the path to save the file is empty. Try restarting the program and see if that fixes it, if not click File → Settings and click on the red button to reset all the saved settings. Make sure the program closes, if not close it out and then reopen it. It should then prompt you again for the path to your folder, select the one I posted above and then it should work and save.

Thanks so much for the help. That worked too.
Now as far as seeing the results. do I need to clear the cache in the sim to see the difference?. I just loaded a saved game to see if the trees changes the size but look pretty much the same size.

Nope, shouldn’t have to clear the cache or anything. If you make changes while the game is running you will have to restart the game to see the changes, that’s the only catch and that’s simply because of the way the game loads in the data. As for seeing the changes it can really depends on how much of a change you make, smaller changes aren’t as noticeable as larger changes.

Feel free to play around until you find something that you like as these changes aren’t made to the original file but saved in the community folder so any changes you make can easily be reverted if need be.

Can we get some ‘before and after’ shots from those who’ve taken the plunge and installed this? I’m curious to see the effect.
