ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:
The old FS2020 bug of windsocks pointing in the wrong direction is still with us in FS2024.

ICAO, coordinates, or specific location:
EDKM

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?
No mods.

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?
Always

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Start a flight in free flight mode
  2. Go to EDKM, runway 04 (runway heading 034°)
  3. Set the wind direction from 034°
  4. Look at the windsock… it’s facing the wind, 180 degrees wrong

Consider adding to this thread so it can go on the unofficial list of issues (if it isn’t there already - scan the top few posts):

Yep, it’s like the people building both ‘sims’ never actually went to an airport on a windy day ! I tried reporting this in 2020 several times over the years…nothing.

Hmm, never noticed that. But it might explain why 75% of the time, MS ATC assigns me runways with tailwind.

The wind turbines are also affected by this bug, they point away from the wind direction.

It seems like the same bug FS2020 had.

Which was that the windsocks (and wind turbines) by default are ‘facing’ 180 the wrong way. Their default heading is 000 degrees, but the sim’s errors make that incorrect. This needs to be rectified.

The work around for now is that scenery designers need to rotate their windsocks 180 degrees, then they indicate correctly. It’s less than ideal, but I can’t see Asobo fixing this any time, sooner or later.

It’s truly incredible that such a simple error to correct, known for four years and above all of fundamental importance for correct flight procedures, is still present. FS2024 has really disappointed me.

They definitely did work on it in FS2020 because I had far less trouble than at the start.

My flight logging app tells me the winds on take off and landing. And so far in FS 2020 (after fixes) and 2024 I’ve not seen it tell me that I had a tailwind when I shouldn’t.

So, while the screenshots show an issue, it would be worth testing to see if it is just the weather widget having the winds the wrong way. If it was just there, then it is pretty minor.

No, the weather widget is not wrong. It indicates the wind that is actually present in the sim. I can assure you that the bug is still there.

I could look further into it on my system, the windsocks and the trees work fine for me. I set the winddirection to 270 degrees and the sock and the trees follow the correct direction as you can see in the following screenshot, looking in the direction of 270 (the runway is 09 and 27):

But the wind turbines are set to a fixed wind direction from the north, the don’t move if you change the wind direction…

The windsocks bug is not present in all airports. This makes it even worse, because when you have to land on an uncontrolled runway you never know if you can trust the windsock or not. Check EDKM as I wrote in the first post.

Oh lord, what a mess. I tried it at EDKM as suggested and the wind sock is opposed to the trees bending in the wind. And the wind turbines always face north… NO way to figure out where the wind actually comes from by looking at these objects.
