G-sync vs V-sync in MSFS

Something happened to G-Sync after Sim Update 3. With G-Sync, I’m getting some flickering when FPS drops. Flickering is barely noticeable but I still notice it for a few seconds and usually when the screen is bright. I don’t remember this happening before Sim Update 3. I had G-Sync set to both fullscreen and windowed mode before and after Sim Update 3. I have tried many different drivers.

I turned off G-Sync, and the issue disappeared. I enabled V-Sync “Fast” in the Nvidia CP, and it appears to be just as smooth as G-Sync but without the flickering issues and laggy cursor. There appears to be no screen tearing with V-Sync set to “Fast”.

Does this sound about right? Is V-Sync set to “Fast” really comparable to G-Sync in the 30-60 FPS range?

My monitor is 32GK850G which is a “G-Sync” monitor (not FreeSync but also not “G-Sync Ultimate”)

I don’t use G-Sync monitor, but I really like using the FAST VSync setting on my 60Hz TV. No tearing, and no lagging.

It’s Nvidia drivers, They have been messed for a while now. I get the flickering also, But more so in other games and Chrome as well.

I haven’t experience this issue myself with FS2020 but used to with Prepare3D and the fix was…

Right click on your FlightSimulator.exe,
Click Properties,
Click Compatibility tab,
Check the box that says “Disable fullscreen optimizations”
Click apply, and OK.

I am unsure if this will work for FS2020 but you can give it a try.

It happened that now GSync works for all the folks that had set it on full screen mode only, whereas before the update it didn’t work because MSFS ran in borderless window mode regardless of the ingame setting.
It has been discussed already, if you have flickering it’s because your monitor is not GSync Ultimate. To get rid of that, disable GSync or set Vsync ON + framerate limit at 30 in the game settings (that works for me, not sure if it will work for others).

Just an addition: the VSync setting in nVidia control panel, combined with GSync, kicks in only when the framerate falls out of the GSync range. Within the GSync range, VRR is on and the setting is ignored.
VSync on Fast is recommended when the framerate is much higher than the refresh of the monitor. For MSFS I would rather keep VSync on and limit the framerate (30 = 72 on a 144 Hz monitor  )

I use the in game V-Sync after the UK update, Asobo use adaptive V-Sync and that give me the best performance, much better than use NVCP, I think setting it to 60 will lock the game to max 60fps, 30 will lock it to half your monitor refresh rate, and 20 to a third of your monitor refresh rate, I have it set to 30 and that gives me 37-38 silky smooth fps on my 75hz monitor.

With the newest Nvidia 465.89 driver Gsync works very well for me. VSync is off in the game

What’s it like? Judder free?

Pretty much, yes. There can be occasional single stutters but I like to believe those are related to network/loading issues

I tried this but there were too many microstutters for my liking. I turned G-Sync back on. The subtle flickering is back when FPS drops very low, but the overall experience is smoother and better, even with a monitor that is not G-Sync Ultimate.

Thanks for the tip though. I realize everyone’s experience is different.

Thank you, I tried this but it did not change anything.
