After a few months of not playing the game, I launched it, it (apparently) installed the latest update (1.39.9), then soon after that the game crashed with the blue loading bar at the bottom of the screen not filling up. I never had problems launching the game before, now I cannot even play it !!! After that the game offered me to launch it in safe mode, same result. HOW COULD YOU MAKE A GAME UNPLAYABLE AFTER SO MUCH TIME ??? Below is the last image of the game before CTD.
Uninstall NVIDIA app if installed and restart PC.
<<< I did not install it, I only installed the latest driver for nvidia (581.15) for an 4070 Ti. There was no other change on my PC since my latest play session with MFS20.
Until Nvidia fixes drivers and Asobo MSFS 2020 please check what happens if you select DX12 instead of DX11 by manually editing cfg file.
To do this, you need to edit usercfg.opt file and modify the line
PreferD3D12 0
Change the number 0 to 1
and save the changes.
Thx, but can you please tell me where I can find that file ? I have the XBOX / microsoft store version of MFS2020, and most of the files I cannot access on my own drive, for some reason …

%localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCacheYour problem may be a real crash, but I have had that happen and stay stuck there for up to 5 minutes and then progress and load it. So make sure you are waiting long enough before assuming it’s really a crash if it is stuck on that screen.
Subsequent loading the SIM the same day was much quicker. Anyway, hopefully that is what is happening. I have a lot of add-ons in my community folder which may be why it occasionally does that.
Thank you very much for your help, I modified the file and it worked. Have you any explanation why the issue with DX11 or whatever ? I suppose I should keep the DX12 setting if I want to keep playing the game ?

it was a real CTD, the game wasn’t running any more
This bug (CTD during loading MSFS 2020) has been with us since January 30th, 2025. Since driver version 580.88, CTDs during MSFS 2020 loading with DX11 selected in the game settings occur even without the NVIDIA app installed, so the situation is now even worse than before.
If you want to have the latest NVIDIA drivers installed, MSFS 2020 must be set to DX12 instead of DX11 until NVIDIA, Asobo, Microsoft release a fix.
Please make sure to participate in the linked thread to confirm you’re also affected by this bug.

I should have added that I am using AMD, not NVidia.
