Will there be boxed versions again of the GOTY editions? Could save some - hours/for some even days of - downloading time upon reinstall. My vanilla(!) install is close to 200GB now..
Good idea, but I guess even these will be outdated in a few months as the Sim keeps developing. But it would be nice for people who like to collect physical memorabilia.
Ask anyone who has a disc version how that works out.
You spend your time swapping discs in and out until it’s installed. Then upon first boot into the sim, you see you’re out of date and spend the next several hours / days (depending on your speed) downloading the most recent version.
And then you can’t run the sim without having Disc 1 in your drive at all times.
Unless you’re a collector and want the physical package and media, there is exactly zero reason to get it.
I already have the Premium Deluxe boxed version from day one. Copying from discs is still faster than downloading. As for the disc 1 that has to be in the drive: just make an image. Works perfect.
I don’t think anyone is disputing this fact. But it only works so well until a certain point.
We’re at SU6 and WU6 now, which means collectively, there have been 12 updates to the sim. These updates are not just small patches, they can also be overhauls on a lot of stuff.
What Crunchmeister71 is saying is that when you load and copy from the discs, you would practically be installing the “pre-release version” The version that they used to burn the discs, and this would always be earlier ahead of the release version that went out to everyone to mitigate the production, and logistics of distributing the disc version. During which time, the devs are preparing for the digital release, which means ironing out any issues that they find. These fixes didn’t get distributed along with the discs, so they have to deliver them via updates.
When you install it, you’ll have to redownload the collective updates of everything that came out after that version you have installed. Which over time, would end up at the same size as the discs themselves that you need to download anyway. Even worse, you could also be downloading “more data” trying to collectively update the Disc version, compared to just downloading the latest version when installing them from the cloud.
The more Sim and World updates we receive, the more obsolete the discs versions would be to use them as the install media and they would only be good as collectibles.
Nope, not into boxed versions anymore. Even as a collection, Why?
They are not worth holding for decades.
The BEST way to Re-install: Use your BACK UP. You do have a backup, right ?
Some people are long time collectors and like their boxes and physical media. It’s definitely not for me, but I can understand why some would want this.
They should just sell an empty box. Install a bunch of disks only to download 20GB+ on first launch…
Yeah the boxed original versions with the little booklet is kinda cool tbh
Interesting how you think your use case applies to everyone. Why would a restore be the BEST way to reinstall? Why would you back up something you can download again?
Many people will reinstall in order to have a fresh copy, not bring back the problems of the past.
I purchased the boxed version just available in August 2020 and installed it in a few hours, certainly less than downloading 60GB from Internet and I had ZERO problems.
Absolutely not! You make an ISO of disk 1 and then mount it with a simple script in Powershell.
Of course my method does not apply to everyone, that is easy to discern.
Why would I want to download 125 GB when I can reinstall from my backup in about 10 minutes.
..
If, Many People, as you say, will reinstall to have a fresh copy, I can restore from my backup in about 10 minutes and have the very latest copy. Cannot get much “fresher” than that and, as a bonus, If my OS boot fails or simply will not start, I always have my trusted backup for recovery..
