Graphics settings in Sim get reset - how to prevent

I carefully made my in-game graphics settings the same as a someone recommended, only to find later that they’ve been reset to something else entirely. I am guessing this is caused by either the GEForce Experience app, or the Nvidia control panel or even a release update (maybe the recent 1.22.2.0). All these are capable of making these changes. Anyone else find this problem, and is there a way that the graphics settings in the sim itself can be made to stick? Of course, it would be nice to be able to save them externally so they can be restored - but in the meantime I just want them to stick!

Open Nvidia Geforce Experience app, and find MSFS in the list of apps. There should be an option to prevent it from optimising the sim (which overwrites your graphics settings).

you can make the in-game setting stick by going into appdata/remote/microsoftflightsimulator/ and set the +R on the usercfg.opt file. You can also make other changes in there, that you cant make ingame as well.

Unfortunately I experience te same and it’s hard to tell wether it’s caused bij GFE or the sim.
Till recently I was able to correct settings but since the last SU’s I have annoying millisecond hick ups every second, even while everytings is set to low presets.
This is not how the sim should behave.

Thanks, I will try that option.
Having the graphics optimized bij GFE seems to be a bad plan…

I’ce seen some suggestions to remove GFE, but then how would you get the new drivers? I like the idea of +r the usercfg.opt but that does seem a bit crude.

You can visit this site:

I dont run GFE, you just goto the Nvidia website, http://www.nvidia.com/content/ pick download, the website will scan your machine after you put in what card you have and what os, and the driver will be presented to you for download, download it, click on the link, follow the instructions and voila new driver installed.

the +R I like because I have some settings in there that the game likes to change on my if I happend to go into it from the game and save.

gfe is def not recommended to best graphic settings for any game !!
and there is no need at all to continuously update drivers.

Thanks, that sounds the way to go as GFE seems superfluous. The forum here is a good way to find what drivers are good which takes care of that, along with what you describe.

If you want to use custom post process effects like in GFE, get a copy of reshade. It will do the same thing and more that GFE ppe’s do, without spying on your every move.

*Disclaimer, we have no actually proof the GFE is collecting data the comment is only meant as humor…

And on that note, its patch Tuesday, let see what horros MS has for us in Win 11 today…hahah

I think it is worth mentioning that If one were to use re-shade for post processing, one should understand in doing so they are making themselves responsible for supporting their sim configuration. What I mean by that, is if you do end up experiencing instability, whether or not that is caused by reshade, its going to always be the first thing support will point at and declare it unsupported, and in the community any discussion will quickly end in “you are going to have to remove re-shade and see if the problem continues”.

INMHO, not a good suggestion at all.

Regarding GeForce Experience and driver updates… you can tell GeForce to not optimize on a per-game or sim basis. I wholeheartedly agree that GeForce is not great at optimizing video settings. Though it can be helpful to people without a lot of technical saviness and get a game/sim “close” to optimization, it just can’t be used to get to the final state of optimization based on your own system hardware and your own expectations of frame rate vs visual quality.

If GeForce is being used solely to be alerted when new drivers are released, there are alternatives. Checking weekly is one. One could leverage Chocolatey and let it manage the Nvidia driver, but you’d still have to run that or script it as a task at login, etc.
