Grumman Albatross HU-16/G111 Thread

An amazing plane by an amazing developer, the level of quality and dedication to it is unparalleled. Thanks Mike. Just keep it going. One thing that I would like to ask (me transitioning from other study level props and probably used to their level of damage modelling):
It looks like in whatever way I abuse the engines they won’t show any sign of performance degradation/wear/tear. Speaking of running in full 51.5mfp for inappropriate long period not settling back to METO and/or using high gear incorrectly in low altitude on top of that and so forth. Is it not modelled or are these radial beasts holding together unlike other engines? All relevant realism settings in the sim being checked.
Anyway, thanks again for what you deliver to us.
Cheers,
Harry

@HarryStamata Thank you for your very kind message, I’m glad you’re enjoying the planes!

On the subject of engine damage modeling, it’s something I had hoped (and tried) to implement using 2024’s new wear and tear system, but that system wasn’t granular enough to handle the unique conditions a radial engine can encounter (supercharger over-boost, oil hydro locking etc) and yet was oversensitive to other conditions that should cause no damage.

The only solution currently would be to roll my own damage modeling system from scratch, but there has just never been enough time available to do that properly, especially weighed against other improvements and features I felt that the plane would benefit from more, and I’m not a fan of releasing anything “half baked”.

Perhaps when amphibians are allowed into career mode I will have another look at this, if there’s time, and I’m hoping the native wear and tear system will also get some love soon, now that the sim is in much better overall shape. It’s a great foundation, but it needs a bit more granularity and allowance for developer control and expansion of it.

Cheers!

Fair enough!
Let’s keep on hoping then, since that is an essential part of the simulation side of things in my view.
And until then, back to flying by the numbers and keep enjoying the plane.

The G111 is not in the SimBrief list of Aircraft Types (unless I missed it).

What is everyones recommendation as a stand in when creating a flight plan ?

I experimented with creating a simbrief profile for it based on other airframes, but wasn’t happy with the results. Eventually, I created this little navmap profile for the HU-16, should be pretty close to the G-111. Eventually I’ll have a bunch of flights using it for the G-111 little navmap should dial in that average perf for me. Just haven’t been as dedicated to flying it the last couple months.

Anyway, if you create a flight plan on simbrief and then import it into LNM, you should get close enough numbers using this aircraft profile.

I love both but don’t understand if there are any limitations to the normal operations of the G-1000 on the G111 as compared to the HU16. in particular vnav in the g111 seems to be tricky or not possible. Also- would like to have autopilot buttons on the front monitor (forgot the name for it) .. I get that the g530 is limited due to specs, but the 1000 has auto vnav ?

I’m pretty sure I’ve had successful VNAV use in the G111, several times; MSFS 2020

@Aulden279780 Thanks, glad you like the planes. I’m definitely a novice G1000 user myself, but I double checked the G1000 and autopilot configurations in the G-111 for any issues, and tried to see if I could replicate your problem by flying a vnav arrival into Bellingham WA today, but the autopilot captured the TOD perfectly and flew the descent as expected.

Can you please provide some more info on the issue you’re having, and maybe try it in the Cessna 208 Caravan and see if your issue appears there as well? The G-111 and Caravan have effectively the same G1000 configuration.

Thanks!

I dont use Little Nav Map but thans anyway.

Were you looking for a simbrief profile for it? That’s what I assumed you meant, but unfortunately there isn’t one. If enough people request one from Navigraph (I requested in their forums) maybe they’ll do it, but since it’s not a popular airliner, I think we face an uphill battle.
