There is discussion on other forums that both sims now no longer support hi-res textures for scenery, presumably to make things smooth on Xbox.
Can we get some clarification on this?

Hopefully not !
This isn’t confirmed 100% but it stems from the fact that a third party map tool can no longer work with MSFS 2024 and 2020 SU16 because the new map LODs are limited to 256x256 texture tiles and 2020 SU15 could handle 512x512. I assume that this is the following confirmed bug which exists on MSFS 2024 is being now moved to 2020 due to the map updates in SU16.
Hopefully they hold off on pushing SU16 as a result of this.
If they keep it like this I’m quitting MSFS.
Interesting, maybe this will be resolved at a later date - more testing!
Still, why now and not at the very start. What prompt the change of lowering the textures resolution. At least it helps in performance by doing so, more smooth.
Nothing has been comfirmed anyway rather then pin points via other threads.
This will be the last straw for me. Not only will this kill it for me I will do everything possible under UK consumer legislation to recover not only the money I spent on the product, but all purchased add-ons and purchase X Plane instead.
They are, again, trying to make it run smoother on lesser hardware like consoles.
Was this asked in the last stream if this is so? Terrible if it’s true for us on PC.
Restore 2020 for PC, that was it when I bought. Let 2024 be a mix for both platforms.
If this is true, there could be another interpretation.
It could be that they considered that reducing the tile size would have a positive effect on streaming and bandwidth requirements.
Unfortunately, streaming is the curse that FS2024 carries with it, and its designers don’t want to admit it’s a failure.
I will too. MS/Asobo are pushing me closer to using X-Plane 12 full time. FS2020 was already dumbed down a few years ago for XBox.
That could very well be. But we’re talking about Azure servers. Surely they can afford to reserve big enough pipes for everyone. (No ‘Airplane!’ jokes…) ![]()
And on a per-user basis, the bandwidth requirements are quite low - at least as far as I’ve measured them. Granted, there are some simmers who are cursed with poor internet bandwidth. ‘Downrezing’ terrain in FS2024 will negatively affect (again…) those of us who have moved on to FS20204 (and have the hardware to support high rez terrain.)
Folks - a number of posts have been removed as being Off-topic. Please ensure your comments are relevant to the topic: “Have MSFS 2020/2024 stopped supporting hi-res textures for scenery?”
Thank you.
This is beyond ridiculous if true. MS, don’t forget your roots! Flight sims were always PC-driven until very recently. Surely they can deliver different texture fidelity to different clients?
This needs to be the number 1 question for the next devstream if true, both in the precollected questions and in the chat. Low res textures ruin the experience completely, especially in VR where the are blown up much bigger. And the low res texture issue has been going on for so long now, it’s almost surreal.
I’m fairly speechless. Just when I was starting to warm up a bit to 2024, they (allegedly) do this AND want to push it into 2020 too, which is still the safe haven for people that don’t want to deal with 2024 atm. Depressing.
It may not be intentional given that the blurry textures topic I linked to earlier has been acknowledged as a bug, with almost 700 votes.
But I wholeheartedly agree, MSFS 2020 shouldn’t be degraded like that.
I just hope they don’t push SU16. It will completely ruin the sim, which has matured nicely.
Right now the high rez textures can only be streamed decently for someone who has a very high -end PC and gigabit ethernet connection. The problem with the high-rez photogrammetry areas like the Grand canyon, mount Rainier and places like this is that they’re right next to lower rez scenery and just looks out of place to the rest of the world in 2024. Is that what we’re talking about here? The photogrammetry high rez? Now I’m in SU16 beta for 2020 and I’m glad they haven’t put this type hi-rez scenery in there. They had started to. I saw some of that photogrammetry resolution in Arizona to begin with. Then thank God they took it out. It looks a heck of a lot better without it.
I was actually going to put up a wish list for 2024 asking that we had two options for photogrammetry. One for buildings and one for scenery. Personally I want consistent scenery. While the scenery around Mount Rainier and Grand canyon looks awesome and I have seen the future with it, it ain’t ready for primetime. I don’t want to lose my photogrammic buildings but I could do without the photogrammetry scenery if it’s going to make these places look out of place with the rest of the world. If that’s not what we’re talking about here, then never mind.
This has nothing to do with PG. it’s regarding the aerial image tiling resolution from Bing
I think we can leave the ‘FS’ out. Bing == MS.
So is there any official word on this?
Confirmation bias is a powerful thing. In the areas I frequently fly, I’m not really seeing any degradation of the ground imagery (using FS2024). Are we perhaps seeing something that isn’t really perceivable? Or is this low-res imagery only affecting certain regions?
I’m not suggesting people are seeing things en masse but I’ve got a pretty keen eye when it comes to picking out subtle differences and I’m having a hard time deciding whether I’m seeing or just perceiving lower quality. Are we now looking for it because we’ve been primed to, whereas before we were oblivious?
Either way, official clarification would be helpful.
Exactly. Until I hear this from an official source, I categorize these posts as anecdotal.
