The key goal to follow all steps of the MSFS2024 Career Mode was to find out the way it is prepared by Asobo for helicopter pilots and get some experience in the variety of helicopter missions.
First of all it is necessary to get the main fixed wing certifications and only then you could fly the helicopters. It is a bit disappointing because actually the young pilot needs to choose between fixed wing or helicopter blade and follow only that pass without forced certifications he wants to avoid.
I started with helicopter Guimbal Cabri G2 which was cheap to purchase for the first sightseeing helicopter company and after learning the helicopter basics and earning the sufficient amount of credits - the next move is to purchase the helicopter Robinson R66. I found out it is hard to control even with my full helicopter controls setup - the governor is not working properly to keep RPM On Green all the time. Anyway it was a good experience as I learned how to manually adjust throttle during different phases of the helicopter flight in case of the governor failure.
The next step was an Agricultural Spraying and to get to the seat of Airbus H125. In contrast with helicopter Robinson R66 it is very simple to control and the governor is working perfectly. It took me long flight hours by helicopter Robinson R66 to collect the necessary amount. When I finally bought the helicopter H125 in the first mission I kissed the “1 200 000 Million Tree”. Simple advice - always check your obstacles around because a single tree may cost you a fortune. It happens that sometimes you just hit the skids even flying high above the ground and sometimes you get the complete disaster - maintenance cost is almost the cost of the helicopter. So I need to start over…and it was a few times.
Of course the way to get what you want is based on the fastest and most effective way to select the high payment for your mission. Once your hand is on the stick of H125 you could participate in half a million missions in Agricultural Spraying but in the end you always get less as it looks like the helicopter spaying tank is not enough to cover the large fields and you have only one attempt to make it. Later I tried Aerial Fire Fighting with Air Tractor AT-802 and Viking Air CL-415 and you could have many attempts to deal with fire. In Agricultural Spraying by helicopters it will be good if you could land on the nurse truck again - refeel and complete the field. The approximate maximum payment you could get for around 30 minutes of flying by H125 helicopter in Agricultural Spraying is around 350 000 Cr - not much and not little. But as long as you are flying the average cost of the Agricultural missions lowers to approximate total cost of 100 000 Cr per flight which seems unfair for five star helicopter difficulty missions.
The next helicopter you want to have in your fleet is H125 is for Search and Rescue missions and the same type - for the helicopter Hoist operations.
From my point of view and the experience the Search and Rescue flying in the mountains especially the Alps is may be the best helicopter beauty experience you could expect from MSFS 2024 quality graphics and… of course, in VR only - because if you try to fly the helicopter in VR in flight simulator - you will never back to screens - never, never and never.
The main issue with Hoist operations for helicopters is a high blue mission ring over the surface of the water in which you should hover over the life raft. In VR you just completely lose the orientation because of the blue ring overlay the view and disoriented. It would be great if it is just a blue flat ring on the surface of the ocean. Anyway I learned to hoover well because of those missions and found out it is possibly the hardest for helicopter pilots because there are simply no reference points you used to.
Very soon I completed all helicopter certifications and… had to go back to the fixed wings again. The main reason is because without fixed wing certification progression you miss the important options like “Live Weather”, opening of the new territories for the new missions and the fact that fixed wing Cargo missions are very profitable. It was needed to make a simple adjustment in settings of my full helicopter control set to control the fixed wing airplanes.
The next golden helicopters in my list were Bell UH-1 Huey and Erickson S-64F Aircrane and I need to choose between 12 million and 17 million Cr. I think that Aerial Construction is the top level for helicopter pilots to achieve so start to collect Cr… and need to go back to the fixed wings once more.
Medevac missions by aircraft Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX gives you from 500 000 to 1 million Cr per 10-30 minute mission. If you are lucky and after climb to 11 000, 12 000, 24 000, 25 000 feet you hear happy words “We are on cruise how you back there” and if the script is working and you get feedback the the patient is OK - just “Alt + N”… and you right on approach to land. But in some missions you could get the confirmation that the patient is “PAN-PAN” and the flight simulator could re-route you to “the nearest airport” but a half and hour flight far from your current destination. It would be good if the arrival airport re-route will be just next to your location.
When you collect more than ten fixed wing aircraft and helicopters you start to feel good with Passive Income if you fly 1,5-2 hours a day yourself - about a million a day - more or less. But on the other side, every 24 hours be ready to pay for your fleet maintenance and… it costs you sometimes from 20 000 to 1 500 000 Cr per aircraft. One real helicopter owner told me that the helicopter business is just 3% profit and you will experience it in the flight simulator as well. Almost all you earn could be hit by huge maintenance costs and by the way, my advice is to buy the minimum cost insurance… currently high damage cover insurance doesn’t work for helicopters at all.
So I flew a lot of Medevac missions by aircraft Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX and bought a used helicopter Erickson S-64F Aircrane for around 17 million Cr but I did not know that 7 million maintenance costs more is to back it in the air :-)… so back to the fixed wings again.
Finally I placed the helicopter Erickson S-64F Aircrane in my updated Headquarters and aviation hangar and it was very unusual to see that as before as after the maintenance the front window wipers of the helicopter are working constantly, wheels are lower than the floor level and helicopter blades are rise high in the air as naturally they should be hung down.
Helicopter Erickson S-64F Aircrane have the problem that after the mission if you press “Shift + Ctrl + E” it still jumps in the air - not so high but still do it - happily it is not “skyrocket” like before MSFS 2024 Update 5 and the rotor brake to apply takes too much time to stop and complete the mission. One more problem is the size of the Erickson S-64F Aircrane helicopter cockpit in VR - it is larger in scale than it should be. So if the helicopter pilot sits in the central position he could not naturally look down via the bulb window (vertical reference window) to the left - it does not let practice the real aerial construction hovering on this large bird.
In conclusion, as you can see the road to the own helicopter of your dreams in MSFS 2024 in Career Mode is extremely bumpy and not without twists - you have to accept the necessity to learn the fixed wing aviation basics.
I hope it will help all beginners who just started their career in MSFS 2024 and love helicopters!
