Announcing the Microsoft / Asobo team is a historic moment for the helicopter community! The development of helicopters has begun. Wonderful, I am very happy!

In developer questions and answers, Asobo team developer Sebastian Wloch spoke about helicopter development. It was great to listen to the information. In the future, we will learn new details about the development of helicopters and we will also get pictures. It will be a very exciting time!

Thank you for the work of the Flight Simulator team!

With the introduction of Helicopters, I hope that the multitude of RoofTop Heli Pads will be added to MSFS, and rooftop, hard, landable surfaces.

Worldwide:

Not a small task to ADD all these !!

Well the good news is that they don’t have to add them all, as simmers have already started posting them on Flightsim.to

I’ve spent many hours in a bunch of different models of helicopters, mostly mountain flying (for real, not simming). 206 Jetrangers, 206 Longrangers, B2 and B3 AS350’s and 407s. Spent far more time in helicopters than commercial airliners.

What I can say is it’s super important to get the aerodynamics of rotor flight as correct as possible in a sim. It’s a whole different beast compared to fixed wing flight. Weather (let alone mountain weather), ground effect, load capacity, rotor coning, torque, turbine temp etc. Its a lot going on every second.

I hope they get it as close to correct as possible when MSFS puts out default helis. They are half the reason I bought this sim. I’ve got a little faith that it’s why it’s taking so long to develop a premium product. I’m excited to see what they come up with.

Have you tried Bell 47 or these free helis like H-60 or H135? What you think their FM and how they are compared to real or other sims?

I like DCS Huey but Flyinside Bell 47 feels too unsteady and powerless. Maybe because it is so small. H135 feels unnatural but I have not ever flew real heli.

The B47 is not a powerful helicopter and it is a bit unstable but not too much. It doesn’t have any kind of automated assistance so you will need to keep it in balance.

I am not a fan of the original (non AirlandFS) flight model of the H135. Although the real helicopter is quite stable, the physics feels weird. The same with the H145. The 145 with AirlandFS feels a bit better to me, more organic in the sense that you have inertia and you feel like you’re controlling a body moving in the world.

Never tried DCS. Haven’t been in a Bell 47 either. Only the models I listed. I’d be interested to see it though. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

It’s a shame DCS doesn’t have a free helicopter for people to try like they have fixed-wing. I’ve tried to convince ED to make even a simple one for people to see how good the flight model can be but to no avail. It’s a shame.

I’m confused now, I thought you could try every module for 14 days, completely for free?

no, there are only sometimes free modules to test, currently there are up to -50% in the shop.
But I would say back to topic now.

@CopMarkv Wrong. DCS have a 14 day free trial on ALL their modules ALL of the time. Once your 14 days elapses, you wait 6 months for the option to do it again.

Only in standalone

thats correct, for benefit of the 14 day trial you need to have the standalone version installed ( not steam ).

But we come bit off-topic. We all have the wish for helicopters in msfs and in best case we get a flight model with the quality of DCS helicopers model. But, to reach this goal might not easy… all other flightsims I tested not reach the DCS helicoper feeling. In a first step I would be happy about basic helicoper support of msfs, with also usefull landing pads etc… and I hope the flight-model will not be a completly fail

The fact that 400,000 users have downloaded the H-135 at Flightsim.to
surely shows the desire and the possibilities for rotary aircraft in sim.

I work in a school near RAF Halton (EGWN) and today at about 14:00 a Puma flew over with Santa waiving at all the children, what a beauty of a helicopter! and to see it at about 100ft was amazing! and of course the kids loved it. So thank you to the RAF for making mine and the kids day. Maybe #ASOBO can make one when helicopter are introduced in the sim?

That number is a bit inflated, as there have been many updates.

Still, there are also 38,000 R44 downloads, 29,000 H60 and already 2400 Huey (which is new this week!)

Helis are the best way to sightsee all the wonderful scenery

That was very kind of you to say, I’m sure the jockeys enjoyed that sortie as much as your children.

400,000 is inflated a lot. Flightsim.to counts each downloads, every updated you download increments that counter, and there were 30 updates. I would estimate it to be around 40,000-80,000 of unique downloads (and may be even less).
