Help with FLC in Cessna 172, G1000

Hi. Either FLC is really buggy or I’m not using it right. So using the altitude knob on the bottom left, I have set the altitude to 3000 feet. Then I click the FLC button to turn it to “On” and then I click the AP button. My throttle is set to full throttle. The Cessna 172 climbs and eventually levels out at 3000 feet. All is good at this point.

Then, ATC tells me I have to climb further to 3600 feet and to expedite my climb. So using the altitude knob on the bottom left, I set it to 3600 feet. Once it is set to 3600 feet, I then click the FLC button to turn it to “On.” I am still set to full throttle in the Cessna 172. Except this time, it won’t climb with FLC set to “On.” I have double checked and the AP button is still clicked and the G1000 is still in AP mode (it says AP in green).

The vertical speed indicator will briefly go up a little and I see a climb rate of 100 feet per minute or so, and then it just drops back to the neutral position and I don’t see a climb or descent rate. I wait for another 30 seconds and I’m not climbing and the altitude is staying at 3000 feet. I double check yet again that I have set the target altitude of 3600 feet, that AP is on, and FLC is on. I have set everything correctly except that I am not climbing :frowning:

Has anybody else experienced this? Am I doing something wrong or is this some weird bug with FLC?

Try this. Click the nose up button on the AP until the target airspeed is around 73 kts. This is Vy, the speed that should give you the best rate of climb.

FLC is used in conjunction with the speed or in the 172 the nose up nose down. The reason why you can’t climb is because you are already at full throttle. You have to reduce the climb speed so the autopilot can nose up to climb.

Procedure I use is set Alt, turn on FLC (It will auto set your speed to the current IAS), Set speed if needed (if at full throttle) then AP master and last either throttle up or down depending on if you are wanting to descend or climb.

Here is a really good vid that explains all the various AP modes. It is how I learned how to use it.

Try clicking VS (VERTICAL SPEED), click NOSE UP for 600-700 vertical speed climb … work?
I don’t think FLC is working correctly
