Just installed SU5 yesterday…but I’m having some bad performance here in my PC.
Specs:
AMD 5800X
32GB DDR4 3600Mhz
RX6800XT
W10 latest version installed in SATA SSD
4K 60Hz LG Monitor (with Freesync)
I’m having bad performance with FPS drops that causes stuttering and tearing becasue it drops below 40Fps (Freesync minimum limit). I always see Limited by Mainthread, even dropping LOD to 50…setting Rendering scale to 80, dropping settings from Ultra to High… The FPS drops are very noticeable when moving the camera around.
Tested closing all apps like Onedrive, Steam, etc…
I expect better performance from a 5800X, I think there is an issue.
Here are some screenshots with sim running, FBW A32X at JKF.
Hope you can help me to have a smooth experience
EDIT: Seems that it only happens in A320 (Stock or FBW). Tested some flights with General Aviation and sim runs smoooth. See video with A320 in ground.
Note how the GPU meter says 0 ms – it’s broken in this build. Thus you will never ever see “Limited by GPU” and need to check GPU usage elsewhere to get the true answer. If GPU usage is above 95%-ish you are GPU limited, otherwise not.
I get similar framerates in the FBW at 1440p so it’s entirely possible nothing’s wrong. I get about 45-55 fps on takeoff and 60-70 during cruise. For comparison I get more like 80 on takeoff and 110 during cruise in the stock A320, in clear skies. (Clouds and atmospheric effects are very GPU heavy and can push it down from 110 to 65-70.)
In the screen with 39.9 fps the MainThread meter shows 29.7 ms (1000/29.7 ms = 33.6 fps) so you might actually be CPU limited there.
Ah, I didn’t look at the video.
No, I doubt this is normal if it’s also in the stock A320. Even with high glass cockpit refresh rate I can reach high framerates, especially during climb/cruise when most of the view is a blue sky.
Do you have anything running in the background that might cause issues? Either by using CPU or by slowing down in another way. (I had that issue with Acronis True Image’s anti-ransomware protection, which costs me about 27 fps when enabled!)
Worth checking if you have any kind of antivirus/antimalware/anti-… except Windows Defender which should be fine.
If it feels worth the effort, try changing to 1440p and High settings, then start with the stock(!) A320 on ESSA RW26 with no traffic, no MP and clear skies and check your framerate there.
I tend to have about 75-80 fps while still on the runway, climbing to above 100 in the early climb (within a minute of takeoff). If your performance is way off that (like below 65 fps on the ground at 1440p High, or below say 85 climbing) even with the camera not moving, I’d say something is definitively wrong.
When you fly a cockpit that has a lot of glass gauges, you may see a greater hit to the Mainthread rates. The newer glass gauges (web assembly modules) run on LLVM’s which are tiny virtual machines. You can expect to see more demand on your CPU than when you fly all steam gauges. When you see Mainthread limits think about ways to take the load off your CPU by reducing the number of objects the sim has to manage. Lower the number of AI objects, lower the terrain and object levels of detail, turn off network features, these things can take the load off the CPU.
I read that a software called “Nahimic” that is related to sound on MSI boards cause FPS drops and stuttering…(ggogle for it). I unninstalled that software, and update the sim with latest Hotfix today…
Now I have a very good performance without the FPS drops that was causing Freesync to stop working and introduce stuttering and tearing.
Now I have around 50 FPS with FBW A320 in Madrid, at 4K with ULTRA settings and smooth performance. What a change! Now it’s a pleasure to fly this sim.
