Horrible Graphics in Switzerland in MSFS2024

Finally was able to check out some spots in MSFS2024 before it’s time for work and I have to say I’m absolutelly shocked by how terrible it looks!

The textures are extremely washed out! Too bright, very low saturation. It looks terrible compared to MSFS2020.

Also, there seems to be a new system in place that automatically changes the colours of the ground textures. So if the aerial image is originally a green field for example, as soon as you change from like July to let’s say April, it all get’s brown. Which is not a bad idea in theory, but the execution is absolutelly terrible. Most areas in Switzerland are just completelly brown from like Nov till May. First of all, that’s not at all acurate, and second: It just looks horribly unrealistic because the colors just in no way reflect anything like the real world.

I have to say I was expecting server issues at launch… but now that the sim actually works, I have to say I’m shocked by how bad it looks.
At least in many areas in Switzerland that I was to check out in my super quick test.

Horrible, washed out textues in “August” around the Mythen mountains in Switzerland.

Same Mythen area Switzerland, view into a different direction. Aweful washed out textures.

Meiringen Airport, Switzerland. in “May”. Should be lush and green in May is a ugly brown. Neither realistic nor visually believable. It just looks horrendous.

Up close, you even see lot’s of masking bugs between the actually green map and the overlayed “brown filter”.

I have to say this is so much worse than what I would have ever imagined could happen in theory.

Well, i just had a flight from Salzburg and was shocked also.
I was in the Alpha and it ran quite good, it ran very good and looked good too.

What i got now i don’t know. Maybe they need more work on it.
I would have loved a port for the controller settings from 2020 to 2024, that is what annoys me the most.

The graphics in Salzburg was very bad also, performance… when i compare it with my experience i have with 2020… worlds!!!

Do you feel perhaps a little oversold or even mis-led by all those You Tubers MS gathered for a launch party in the Grand Canyon a few weeks ago…

The first months with 2020 were not good too, i just hope they optimize it and do not only use it to push the sales for newer, expensive hardware like headsets and GPUs! *cough Pima… *cough Nvid…

When i get an experience like i am used in 2020 i am satisfied!

Same in the UK. They have replaced sat images with ‘artistically’ rendered seasons, and it doesn’t seem to quite work yet. Looks awful.

Exactly this. Marketing, Hype, Youtubers and Influencers. I hope Asobo and Microsoft take a REAL hard look at themselves and consider who their community are, instead of the NOISE generated by these people.

Hi,
Same aweful brown grass all over LOWS in Austria. Looks like somewhere in the western U.S. where the grass turns brown. In Austria the grass is green all year long, even during winter under the snow.

So far I am really disappointed by MSFS 2024.

I think I know what they did:
They created a “season” overlay filter over all the satellite imagery.
I can even see this in the worldmap view in free flight. Turn the season to Nov/Dec and half of Switzerland (actually half of Europe and basically all the alps) just turn into an awful brown.
Turn it to July however, and all get’s green and lush.

This approach is just wrong. Because weather things turn “brown” or not, at least in central Europe and the alps, mainly depends on the HEIGHT of a place. In the valleys, things stay more or less green all year long, while things turn indeed brown above 4500 ft or so.

But now in MSFS2024, almost all of Switzerland just turns completelly brown from like Nov till May.
And even once it’s actually “green” in the sim (Like from June to Sept), even then things are still very washed out in many areas.

THIS IS UNACTEPTABLE. It’s a massive downgrade from what we had.
Yes, we did not have seasons before. But what is the point of having seasons if they are done so poorly and look so aweful?

Check out some more screenshots:

This is the “brown filter”, cleary showing in the world map how they just make everything brown (time set to december)

In contrast, this is July.
Again: The idea is not bad at all. But the exectution is way to extreme in terms of the brown in winter and covers way to much areas.
It should only affect things above 4000 ft or maybe even 5000 ft.
Below, it’s green and stays green, unless it’s not covered in snow.

Lake Zürich above Rapperswil in “November”. What the hell Asobo???
It’s not just brown (which is totally wrong, grass is still green in reality (never gets brown)), it’s also just horribly washed out.
Again: I see the good intention… but the execution is absolutelly unaceptable.

Same area, same time (November), just horrendous.

And what the heck are these spikes? I guess 3D-scanned trees… that should have been removed.

On a positive note, arid and desert areas look incredibly good at low altitude.

Well, half of Europe looks like a desert now ^^

Another big regression in the Alps, like all moutain ranges, is the snow coverage. At certain time of year and certain altitude, there is a snow cap that can’t be removed, even using custom weather and setting the snow coverage slider to 0.
With the new world map, you can see it straight away.

Zermatt (Switzerland) in July, snow coverage set to 0

then October, snow coverage set to 0

then January, snow coverage set to 0

This tile popping and those ugly colors are visible on the world map as well as in game. It’s all over the Alps

That’s a shame. I’ve yet to see a compelling reason to switch (not a gamer)…

Its not only at Switzerland. It seems to be anywhere and everywhere. I tried a lot of places and they all look like this. Compared to 2020 its always worse or equal. Those bidges at NYC… unbelivable… Seems they trade quality for FPS

How will that even be in the future?
You can’t download better imaginary to your device?
Can you even buy scenery that is then streamed instead of the normal stuff?

How will it be? No idea whatsoever…

It need to run on Xbox. So thats why it cant have 200GB install size and needs to have better performance. If a high end PC struggles to render stable FPS most of times, imagine you needing to make an improvement and run on a very limited hardware. Some compromise need to be done. Seem to me that all those gorgeous scenes of the trailers are just it, scenes. The actuall sim is not like that. Seems to be a little bit better today, maybe because of server issues but change camera to outside view and when get back on cockpit not having textures correct loaded is a big red flag

Depends on the box. xbox series x has 1TB (800GB) or 2TB (1800GB) which both can be extended with 2TB. My Xbox series x has 1GB and MSFS2020 with almost all the additional scenery, MSFS2024 and some easy to play old school games. No worries about disc space at all.

Other content can be used on external hard drives as well.

Yeah it’s real bad
I know what they are trying to do with this “season system”. But it looks horrendous. They need to turn this off. Or give us the option too.
Or keep the normal original colourful aerial images in most aeras and only desaturate thouse above 5000 ft or so.
In it’s current state, it just makes the world look very ugly and far from realistic.

It’s a good idea, but current implementation is overly done.
Whole Eastern Europe now looks more like a scorched land in autumn and winter.

One shot from Hungary. There should be some green there

Yeah it looks like half of Europe had a bushfire that just burned down EVERYTHING. So ridicoulos.

It’s the same up in Canada, etc.

The way the this system “works” is just wrong.
Somebody at MS/Asobo actually thought this is a good idea… and someone signed it off.
Crazy
