How do I register an IFR flight in Xbox?

Hiya folks. I’m flying on the Xbox using the Beechcraft Bonanza G36 with the G1000 NXi. I’ve looked at a couple of YouTube videos, but for some reason I’m unable to register my IFR flight with ATC.

  1. I input my takeoff airport and destination
  2. I then click the PROC button to choose an approach (IFR …)
  3. Then I activate.

I take off and I don’t see the option of registering my flight. I tune into the landing airport, but still no IFR instructions. Is there a difference between LOAD and ACTIVATE in the MFD? I’m clearly doing it wrong, just don’t know what. Thank you.

I don’t think the NXi has that functionality yet. Haven’t seen an official reply but others have said the same.

You should be able to do it from the world map, though.

Thank you. I wonder if the stock G1000 has that feature? I’ll remove the NXi add-on and see how these instruments function. Now that I think about it, I have no idea what the other planes have as instruments. Kind-of-sort-of jumped into NXi territory and learned from there.

Keep in mind that the NXi is very new, and written from scratch.
I think it’s pretty amazing how far they’ve come already TBH. The first public version (0.1.0) was less than three weeks ago and the changes in 0.2.0 and 0.3.0 are insane for a few weeks of work.

Ah gotcha. Didn’t realize the progress. That’s amazing! I should go read their dev notes.

Yes. And it’s exactly how it sounds.
Load = Future (Halfway through flight, want to switch Approach/RNWY)
Activate = Now (For a new departure sequence/New Waypoint/Last minute Approach/RNWY change)

My mind goes 2 directions with this. You gotta let me know which one applies:

  1. You set up Low Altitude IFR flight on the world map, with a departing/arriving airstrip, and ATC doesn’t recognize it.
  2. You set up Nothing in the world map, and instead do all of your flight planning in the cockpit.

ATC and IFR currently do not work on the Xbox correctly.

Second one. I wanted to be all fancy and set it up in the cockpit. :sunglasses:

Ah, gotcha. I get so antsy looking at all the PC simers on YouTube. I then try to do what they’re doing… :see_no_evil: I guess I’ll just have to pay attention to what features work on console moving forward. Thanks for your response.

Totally fair. And it’s good practice to learn how to use the ■■■■ thing. But IFR flight plans aren’t “spontaneous”. Even when they’re typed in manually after startup, that flight plan is still registered with the FAA. If you’re watching streamers using VatSim (Live ATC) They’re just typing in what they already registered online. They’re just trying to give you as much of a “Real World Experience” as possible.

If you want the Sim to recognize it, you’re better off doing all of your planning in the world map.

Edit* - I can’t remember off the top of my head, but keep an eye on the ATC box as you approach your destination. See if there’s an option that says “Something something something Instrument Flight Plan

To be fair, it ain’t working so hot on PC since the update, either…

You should try the WT CJ4.

It works.

Jets! I’m not ready for that kind of power. I tried flying one once and boy was it VERY different from a Cessna 152 . I’ll wait til I hit the 50 hour mark before trying that. I’ve got about 30 more hours to go.

The WT CJ4 is easier to fly than the C172 or C152. (IFR/ILS)

You want to fly IFR in a C152?

I don’t know if “easier” is the right word to use here… Maybe more convenient? If you already know the other systems?

But heck, give it a shot! That’s the whole point of a sim. You get to fail over…and over…and over…and over again until you get it right.

Hahaha no. I was flying it in a Beechcraft Bonanza G36.

I think OP’s problem stemmed more from trying to get the Sim to recognize his flight plan, without setting one up on the World Map. (But if you’re just clarifying that there IS indeed a solution to IFR on Xbox, then disregard the rest of my post)

Again, not an expert here so I could be wrong… But is there any system in-game, that will translate a flight plan that’s spontaneously entered on the tarmac, into ATC prompts and commands? Don’t you HAVE to set it up in the World Map for a true ATC guided IFR flight?

I agree.

You have to get the Flight Plan into FS2020.
Either via the Plan being made on the World Map or
via Navigraph Charts or Simbrief or Little NavMaps.

Then, with The WT CJ4, you have to get it into the Flight Management Computer to get the Autopilot to fly it in IFR/ILS, ATC, etc…

I’m happy to announce that I was able to setup an IFR flight plan through the MFD in the Xbox. I chose a starting airport and loaded the game. Then I went through the process of creating a flight plan and adding an ILS approach through PROC. Finally I loaded it.

I then loaded the ATC interface and chose “clearance.” To my surprise I saw the option of registering my IFR plan. :star_struck:

What I changed was I removed the NXi add-on so I’m working with the stock G1000.

That’s fantastic news!!

It’s not that hard if you know how to actually fly under IFR. As a matter of fact it’s super fun.
