How Realistic is VR

The reason why I emphasized a VR instead of real paradise is because 1) VR paradise will require much less resources to build and a real utopia may not even be possible (say, how can you let everyone achieve his dream to own a beach property?) 2) In real world there are too many zero sum games thus conflicts are unavoidable and may ruin the whole society. On the contrary, a VR world can be built to meet most if not every mind’s needs, because VR is by its nature built to fool/satisfy each individual.

The thing is that something like that would literally require a holodeck (from Star Trek The Next Generation) like experience, where it’s not just VR vision (that looks like you’re wearing goggles anyway, even for the best HW, with the best tuned games, and the best HMDs with the best drivers), but a whole body experience that is completely indistinguishable from what we call reality. All 5 (6?) senses, sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell must be reproduced with 100% fidelity. No goggles, no blurred vision, no controllers, no nothing.

Do you mean you’d need about 210 deg HFOV covering your entire field of view

You might want to see these specs then:

Looks like a good product in search of a competent manufacturer, or at least some serious investors. That video is over 2 years old, and they still don’t have anyone in the US retailing or wholesaling it, which makes me suspect they can’t actually build any, at least not in the quantities necessary for commercial penetration.

Assuming any exist at all, they’re probably just engineering samples.

But yeah, I’d definitely be interested if it were real, available, and at a reasonable price. But I don’t think it ever will be, sadly. Maybe HP can buy their IP and use it for the G3.

But while that might make for a better PC VR experience, it’s nowhere near what I was talking about in terms of complete full sensory, full body experience needed for what’s been discussed here.

Thanks for your post, I have a 3 year old VIVE headset so will see what that looks like but just purchased a Aleinware top end Rig, I too am a PPL and the videos from players using ULTRA graphics are phenomenal,

the first time i tried msfs was in 1996, i dont know which version it was, it was fun but it didnt keep me amused for long. Then i tried it again around 2010 i think and i was blown away by the graphics and realism it offered. And i remember saying to a friend " imagine somebody would have told us in 1996 what msfs will look like in 10 years from now, we wouldnt believe him" I thiink it is the same situation right now, i cant imagine how VR will look like in 10 Years, even in 5 Years… And yet i am totally impressed by msfs2020 VR in its actual state. For me it feels totally real, (maybe because i am not the brightest and my brain is easyly tricked…) I never abort flights in VR and i always try to land properly, even when i just try out a new setting after fiddling with the graphics. I have quit flying the big Planes , most of the Time i am practicing Traffic Patterns in small Aircraft and it totally love it.

I know.

Despite the downgrade in visuals it is quite difficult to get back to 2d gaming. I suppose that in itself is an indication of the direction gaming should now (or at least in the near future) be taking.

How long did it take x-plane to provide a stable vr experiance?

If you compare x-plane and MSFS then I think MSFS wins… Yes x-plane is smoother and you have the controllers.. but it is smooth because it does not have the world realism MSFS has. And I am sure MS will release and update where they fine tune the experiance more and add the missing controllers.

Yes, I also turned to land in every flight in VR no matter how “informal” that was.

IL-2 Stalingrad is also a very smooth VR game with lower standard graphics. However it’s the best WW2 air combat simulator, and playing it in VR is a vastly improved experience to me.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. IL-2 is a fantastic experience in VR. Clearly it is a different sort of sim from FS2020 and so the two can’t really be compared. Apples and oranges. Even so it is a great VR experience if you have any interest in WW2 aircraft :slightly_smiling_face:

How realistic is VR?

While in VR I like to step outside the cockpit of the Airbus and admire the even spacing of the rivets under the brilliant white paint and looking back at the left wing as it flexes while flying over the Alps with the mountains beneath my feet at the same time wondering how can I remove the swirly scratches on the side window.

Just like Superman in real life.

I’m flying in real life (VFR in the Tecnam P2002 Sierra) and in simulators with the Reverb G2. I have been using VR long before MSFS2020 in various other GA and MIL flightsims. I have even more hours with TrackIR, but my VR hours are catching up…

I have to say that there is no better way to experience flightsims than with VR. Why? Now, both VR and TrackIR give you freedom to look around, but VR gives you so much more the illusion of presence and “being there” compared to TrackIR, regardless of any flightsim. What makes MSFS2020 stand out in VR is the recognizability of your position relative to local terrain and objects compared to real life. This greatly increases the feeling of presence ánd your training effectiveness, because now you can correlate all your flying with your local VFR maps, circuit procedures and knowledge. So yes, I feel that VR in MSFS2020 is very Realistic, with regards to visuals.

I already felt for a long time that I can’t fly without VR anymore, but since MSFS2020 I can’t see myself practicing with any other GA flightsim. And with time, I hope that accuracy of flight models in MSFS2020 become even more detailed.

The only disadvantage I have encountered with VR is that you’ll be WANTING to spend €€€ / $$$.. more and more and more…

Cheers Scuby

yes, you will be spending some money into your PC and Graphics Card, but you dont need to spend any money in a DIY-Cockpit anymore.

And you can’t walk outside your DIY cockpit and admire the plane you’re flying along with the breathtaking view no matter how real the switches are, how big your wraparound screen projection is.

That was my thought too. VR is the poor mans DIY cockpit.

Haptics have some limitations compared to a DIY cockpit, but on the other hand, the field of vision in VR is truly 360° in any axis. And if you look to the side and down, you can see the left wheel of your Cessna

The other argument is a serious DIY cockpit often focuses on an aircraft type: tube liner, G1000 prop etc. With VR, you can fly any aircraft in the appropriate cockpit environment. If you fly a range of aircraft, VR is a better option.

Glad to know I am not the only one that steps outside the plane from time to time to enjoy the scenery. or walk back of the plane and sit in the passenger seats

On the side-note; As with a HOTAS or any other precision instrument, a gaming mouse needs software and configuration. I don’t know what gaming mouse you have but, unless it’s some knock-off, you have to take your time to configure it, install the drivers and supporting software. MSFS has a lot of configs built in for your flight sim gear but next to nothing for the mice. Don’t forget profiles in the mouse software (as most have these). You can configure something on your desktop, but your mouse will automagically switch to a different profile the moment you launch your sim so all your configs fly out the window and you feel like nothing happened. Take the time to learn about your device. I’m sure you’ll eventually come to an understanding with the ruddy mouse
We don’t fly planes because it’s simple… The same applies to using gaming mice. But once you get it, it’s the best thing ever!
