How to install add-on outside fs2020 marketplace

Thanks for that mate, did all that and got the pathway.
But when I click on my C drive, USERS/USER..from hereon there is no APPDATA, so I can’t go on.
Can you enter it in manually, and if so, where..is it in that box next to an icon of a monitor?

I just typed that pathway in, and it came up as “file empty”

Several observations.

  1. If you have not added any community data yet, of course it will be empty.

  2. I believe that appdate is a system hidden folder. If so, you will have to change your file manager to show hidden files in that directory path.

You can do that by opening File Explorer using the Windows shortcut Windows + E. Then select the View tab in the ribbon at the top and click the “Show/Hide” box. Select the “Hidden items” checkbox to show the hidden files and folders.

Once you can navigate to the community folder, I like to create a shortcut to it on the desktop. You can do this by dragging the icon at the left of the path at the top of file explorer onto the desktop. From then on, getting to the community folder is as simple as double clicking on the shortcut.

I don’t recommend leaving hidden files showing so be sure to go back and hide them again when you are all done. You can selectively hide and unhide individual folders and files by changing their properties.

  1. If that was all a little much, try creating a shortcut on the desktop for anything, (or copy an existing one) and then manually edit the path on that shortcut to point you to the community folder.

Cheers!

I’m not at my gaming computer now, but location is this one if you bought it from Microsoft Store:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe

EDIT: my community directory is exactly here: c:\Users\pcnep\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community\

I bought mine at the MSoft store. That is NOT where mine is. Having spent weeks trying to find mine, and judging by what I have seen from other users, it could be “virtually” anywhere.

That’s how I stumbled on the developer mode method of finding it. One thing is for sure - flight simulator knows where it’s files are! So as far as I know, the developer mode ALWAYS works to find it!

Not only that, but developer mode works no matter what source MSFS2020 was purchased from.

It does, but be aware that addons from the MS Store are often installed in the “Official” - “OneStore” folder, not the Community folder.
Community and the Official One Store folders though, are both in the same file.
So if you found the Community folder, you can find the other.

FWIW, the location of the official folder is also listed in the developer mode options right next to the line for the community folder.

Thanks, I never went to developer mode to try and find the folders.

I fly at two locations on different computers. With store purchased add-on aircraft, it’s just a matter of logging on to my FS2020 account and downloading the aircraft from the content manager onto each machine.

How does flying from different computers work with aircraft purchased from outside the FS2020 marketplace? Will I have problems installing on two different machines? Will I need to purchase the aircraft twice to run on two machines?

Just like any other Micrsoft app, they should be available on every device you install to.
It is all installed through the content manager, which is specific to you, so anyone else signing onto your sim wouldn’t have access to that content, but bear in mind, you can only be signed on one device at a time.

Ok, did all that and found that when I clicked on Hidden Files, no more files appeared.

I guess that means that the Community folder won’t appear until I download an addon like liveries eg, in which case the d/load goes into it and then shows up in your File Manager?

No anything in that folder remains hidden.

Unless you or another install of some kind puts something in the community folder, it will be empty.

I am thinking perhaps you think it’s like other folders that have files in them as part of the program. But it is not like that at all. It’s only there so community folks like you and I can put things in it. Asobo actually anticipated that we would do that. When the simulator loads, it looks to see if anything is in the community folder and if there is, it loads that information instead of any equivalent information it may have access to elsewhere.

In your case, if you have not put anything there, it is empty. And it will stay empty until you do.

Also, most add-on features like liveries don’t put themselves in the community folder (some do, but most don’t).

The normal process is to download a zip file from the web, unzip the zip file, and then YOU have to copy or move the contents to the community folder usually as subdirectories. Sometimes the zip file will include instructions, but sometimes not.

Thanks for all that John, I guess I’ll work my ay thru it all..Was so much easier with W7.
BTW, I know a guy with the same name, where are you located plse?

I PM’d you with more about me.

I’m trying to help you, but it isn’t easy when I don’t have my hands on your keyboard.

We could try some screen shots.

Are you using Windows File Manager to examine the directory and files on your computer or something else?
