How To Know Which Taxiway To Use (When Parallel Exist)

Good afternoon forum,

I fly exclusively on VATSIM so 99% of the time, I taxi where ATC instructs me. For the times when no coverage is available I was wondering what the general rule / practice is for taxing when 2 taxiways run side by side.

Example, Taxing to 23 at YYZ

Alpha and Bravo run down to Hotel and then to 23.

So what would be best practice in terms of using Alpha or Bravo?

I wasn’t sure if the one closest to a runway would be for aircraft coming off the runway going to the gate?

Another example going down to 36R at KAUS

Would you take Bravo to the runway, and planes existing 36R would take Alpha to the ramp?

Thanks in advance.

I fly without any ATC so this is a decision I’m used to making, and there isn’t a wrong answer. Let’s call the parallel taxi nearest the runway the inner and the other the outer. I stay clear of the inner when upwind of any high speed exit, imagining arrivals would be using the inner. At YYZ in particular, I’d stay on the outer to 23. At AUS the parallels for the terminal ramp have an American right hand rule, taxi to the right side. Not sure what the Brits are doing, but AUS is close to home and I’ve got real world experience flying into/out of there although it was always to/from the FBO’s.
