The sim isn’t ready enough in it’s current production state for ad-ons either payware or freeware, it needs to be stable at it’s core base first. FSX had it’s issues at the beginning, but removing it’s production was probably a blessing in disguise, because after market work arounds were implemented and the third party made it more of a success than MS ever could have imagined. That’s Human endeavour for you. MSFS is trying to fulfil that philosophy but it’s totally flawed. The sim is trying to accommodate the FSX ethos of accommodating the third party addon and be open to ingenuity but FSX was left in a state that was not in perpetual development state, the base sim was ‘as is’ and a known quantity . Everybody has to follow Asobo’s lead and then play catch up, I think Asobo was given an ultimatum, “if you can make this sim and in five years you have a product ready to be released you have the job”. Well, they did, sort of. “It has to be ready for Xbox in five years. Put it out there for the PC users as soon as you think it will be possible, get the third party developers interested and onboard, we will deal with the implications as we move forward.” I’m pretty sure this sim should have been ready for the official new Xbox release, but it it has proved more difficult than expected. And I’m not surprised. There’s little doubt that the eye candy has taken precedence over substance, the Xbox platform is all about that up to an extent. I think this is a long haul development with hierarchy implications, yes we were duped by marketing that this was a polished product, it’s obvious now it is not. But seriously, having an insight of what this sim could be and will be given time, is there any other viable alternatives?
This is my take on things, and I know others will disagree, we live in a marketing World of hype, everybody wants their product to shine, and the state of tech at this moment in time relies on marketing hype. I believe Asobo are fighting a battle on more than three fronts. And honesty isn’t going to win at this stage. It’s a case of hang on in there, and also it’s a case of “I’ve paid for this, and it was promised to be a working product” I can see both sides, I too get seriously peeved when things break, but the alternative is going back to 10-15 year old tech, that developers have admitted is now obsolete.
Change when it’s subtle evolution, is not as painful. We are looking at a giant leap in change and skipped years of subtle evolution with this sim, and that is painful!
We all know how much is riding on the venture, most of us have said “I wished the MS Flight Sim Franchise had continued development” (2.5GB of ram limit) in the past, It was a great relief when prepar3d announced it was going to continue improving the FSX and 10 year earlier code. Here we are now with a new sim that has had to re-learn 15 years or so of an after market FSX eco system. It’s time to throw away those 15 year old shoes that have been so comfortable, and break in a new pair of shoes.
It’s a piece of software that is mainly used for pleasure, if I had to use it because it’s the main source of income like my video editing software I would be livid, it’s not the end of the World.
