Idaho Backcountry Progressive Airstrip Itinerary

Here’s an itinerary for anyone interested in exploring bush flying in the Idaho Backcountry.

Six airstrips progressing from easy to more difficult to hard.

Idea is not mine, but a recommendation of progressing through the backcountry in increasing difficulty:

Idaho Backcountry Progressive Airstrip Itinerary.pdf (554.3 KB)

Garden Valley (U88) to Smiley Creek (U87), easiest

Then,

Johnson Creek (3U2) to Big Creek (U60), more difficult

To,

Soldier Bar (85U) to Cabin Creek (I08)

159 NM trip

Have fun!

Johnson Creek and Big Creek are two of my favorite spots in the middle of nowhere. Good payware scenery for those.

I have all the creative mesh scenery for Idaho they’ve put out, as well as by Orbx and some freeware too.

I have the backcountry as covered as I can…

I cannot find any Creative Scenery airport in ORBX Central for 2024. Maybe they have it for 2020 only?

Creative Mesh is the 3rd party developer, look up “Idaho” in the Marketplace. They have 5 airstrips that are really good. Orbx only has the Hells Canyon strips in the Marketplace.

I no longer use outside vendors like Orbx, too many places to look for updates and remembering passwords, etc.

The progression is what makes this more useful than a simple list of challenging strips. A nice way to fly it would be to keep the same aircraft, load and weather for the first run, then repeat it with different conditions. That gives each visit a purpose beyond just collecting another landing.

Exactly!

I actually got the itinerary from a IRL mountain flying website from a Mountain Flying Course provider in Idaho.
