[InDevelopment] [DevDiary] KRIC - Richmond International Airport

Again, so outstanding progress. I’ve been following you since early June and I haven’t seen this asked and answered, sorry if it has: Do you live in Richmond, nearby or “in a galaxy far, far, away”?

Nope, admittedly never been. I live in Colorado, have some friends and family in Northern Virginia and Charlottesville but have never actually set foot in Richmond.

Wow - that’s amazing. I use the MS Flight Simulator on Xbox. Not only do I fly flight sim out of RIC frequently, I’m also the Airport Operations Manager at the airport. The graphics and detail are spot on! Can’t wait to see the final version. Will the new textures show up in a future update for the Xbox version of flight sim?

Such a small world! That’s awesome to see the airport ops manager is on here. Side note about a time I reached out to RIC on social media. When Microsoft announced they were creating custom hand crafted airports for the sim in one of the service updates, the folks at DFW made a point to tag them and ask to have their airport rendered (Which they did!). I tagged RIC on social media and was met with a very unenthusiastic person who seemed to have no interest in participating in any of this. Was a bit surprised by the reply. This was obviously a year or so ago. Would’ve thought they would have loved to see RIC get some love. I guess in all fairness, they may not have had a clue what any of this is, but I felt like it was a missed opportunity.

None the less, it’s awesome to have someone from the airport on here. I’m a career firefighter nearby, so I know several of the folks who work at the fire station there. Great people! I’m also looking forward to seeing the final product that @CAverage303 comes up with!

Nice to meet you! I’ve always wondered if there were any KRIC employees lurking around this forum post. To answer your question about Xbox I have thought about it but to be perfectly honest I don’t have the slightest clue about how to get scenery ported to the console version nor do I own one nor do I even know if that’s a requirement. Once I have the PC in a good stable and stable place I would definitely like to look closer at that.

That said, as a representative of the airport are you in a position to get exterior photos of the gates? It’s pretty difficult to find any photos and the videos on YouTube don’t give me much. I definitely feel my texturing and general atmosphere of the gates is lacking and any closeups and detailed material would be very helpful and appreciated. If you’re not able I totally understand and don’t want to get anyone in trouble. Please DM me if you want more info.

Quick sneak peak as things progress nicely. Probably another couple of weeks of work left so I’m optimistic I can hit the goal of release this month.

Looks amazing and can’t wait to add this to the collection. By the looks of things, this could easily be considered payware!

It certainly does look great. I “fly” into RIC quite often. My “home base” is just up the road at LKU and most of my “flying” is CHO-ROA-RIC-SHD-LYH-OKV. It will be a super addition.

Version 0.1 is live on flightsim.to! I’ll be keeping this thread active and posting here as I continue to update the project. Still a long ways from finished but I’m pretty proud of what I have in these early stages and looking forward to hearing your feedback. Thanks to all of you for your kind words and encouragement, it’s really meant a lot as I’ve trundled through this airport. Hope it lives up to your expectations!

Just wanted to say it’s great to see this scenery on the “Trending Sceneries” page of flightsim.to!

I noticed that, I’m pretty thrilled with the response so far and still so much to come.

Did several flights in and out of the airport and everything looked great! Obviously we can tell where there is still some improvement around the field, but overall you’ve done an outstanding job with the terminal and parking area. Can’t wait to see some of the finer details added over time. Outstanding work so far!

You ought to be thrilled because your contribution is first class. After spending over an hour of “plane spotting” at your new RIC and using FSLTL I am blown away. More planes parked than ever before probably because the incoming planes actually had a gate to park. Never seen cargos going to the Cargo terminal, again because of proper spots. Most all companies at their proper gate. I, and on behalf of all of us here in the Richmond metro area, are so grateful for giving us such a quality product and especially from someone thousands of miles away. Thank you, thank you!

Enjoyed a first flight (and extra long taxi for sightseeing) around the new field.

I know you are looking for feedback so I will mention that there was a disagreement in wind direction between two windsocks at the approach ends of rwys 20 and 16. If memory serves, the only large sock at the real airport is located somewhere near the center of the field around the firefighting station… but it has been a long time.

You are doing super work and I look forward to more flights there and updated versions as time goes on.

The terminal is already looking very nice. Will the buildings at the GA ramps have more details one day?

Thank you!

Thank you all for the kind words, I’m thrilled to hear the project is on the right track and I can give Richmond the representation you all deserve.

For the windsocks, I remember there was a bug where nearby ones were showing different directions and speed. Not sure if and when this was fixed but I’ll look closer at the placement. It’s been ages since I placed them so I can’t quite remember the details. I do know there is a rogue windsock on RW34 that for the life of me I can’t remove.

I do plan on giving the GA areas some love. For now I used generic hangars just to have something that looked like an airport but eventually I will model the actual hangars. Immediate plans are to work on the maintenance buildings behind A gates and then the FedEx and Piedmont buildings south of the terminal.

It has been awhile since I’ve posted here since installing your wonderful KRIC. Lately, I was interested how does MSFS get the frequencies to use at each airport. I found out that they are taken from Jeppson or other services and are written into each airport. Using a new ATC program with your rendition of KRIC certain frequencies weren’t showing up (Departure Control and Arrival). Does your KRIC have the actual frequencies built into it or does it retrieve them from MSFS stock KRIC? Thanks.
