In downloaded the game last night right after release.
Even thou the setup is kind of slow because of download / extract / download /extract / download…
i was still able to Download with around 350MBit.
Maybe it has something to do with my country (austria) and the servers here.
Nevertheless, i guess you are a bit to harsh in blaming Microsoft. Maybe they are not the problem…

I downloaded succesfully and once done pressed continue to get into the menu. On restart I get the insert disk message. I have checked for updates in the Store and it says I am up to date. When was this update pushed and what is the version number?
This is a really poor job on your part…pre-purchased a month ago, download for 6 hours and this BS happens. Horrible.
My current version number is 1.7.12.x. When you get a chance please follow the steps in this guide.
@mrgador fixed the issue of the blue bar getting stuck at 1/3 by creating a new user on my pc (mine had non-Latin letters) and reinstall the game in it !
why can’t one person from Microsoft or whoever give an official explanation for this? Continues to just attempt to down load same file over and over..utterly ridiculous

Bad news, the downloader only had about 12 files left to decompress and now I’ve got the “Please wait…” thing happening again…
Refresh my memory, what did you do to get going last time?
I deleted all of the files that weren’t folders in the Steam folder

A load of “The device, \Device\Harddisk1\DR1, has a bad block.” However, there were several of these errors when the downloader was working properly
Hi, I don’t understand how did you fix the issue? You firstly created a new windows profile and after you reinstalled the hole game on the new profile?
Another update for you, I restarted the program and deleted the latest file from the Steam folder, appears to be decompressing again.

@Tofifil created a new user account on Windows and installed the game through that. Tofifil found that having non-Latin characters in his profile name was what broke the sim.

I have installed and now get to the Checking for Updates part. It’s get’s to 75% and then just CTD.
Updated OS to build 2004. Updated GFX drivers etc, but no use.
Running and Intel i7-9700, 32GB, RTX 2070S
