So I’m thinking about using my 2016 LG B6 OLED 55” TV as a monitor for flight simming. I’ve done extensive research on the topic and am still unsure what to do. I plan to use this on a standard size desk so the screen would sit approx 3ft away from my eyes.
Is this too close?
Would I be better off using my existing Alienware AW3423DW Ultrawide monitor?
Is the 2016 B6 LG Oled too old to be any good for flight simming?
Although i’m happy with my existing monitor it’s just the ultrawide aspect ratio that sometimes bugs me. It just seems a bit too wide and breaks the immersion a little.
For a standard general purpose PC monitor it’s too big. But if that’s just for flight simming, then it should be quite immersive.
However, this particular TV lacks the features of your Alienware monitor. It can only do 60Hz at 4k resolution and does not support variable refresh rate (no gsync compatible). It’s worth a try, maybe you’ll like it regardless.
I used a 2016 LG C6 (curved) OLED 65" as a monitor for gaming and, while the picture was magnificent, this particular year’s OLED model range is very susceptible to burn in with red and mine did just that with 2.5 years of use. LG ended up replacing the screen for free but once burnt, pardon the pun, I did not want to use it again for gaming, so I switched to a 75" QLED and have never had an issue.
I believe after 2018 LG progressively reduced the susceptibility to burn in with their newer models, so I’d only be gaming on an OLED model from the last couple of years.
I use a 55" smart TV as a flight sim monitor.
I can then re-size the active sim screen to about 80% of the full screen and have other stuff displayed at the side - operating/ pilots manuals etc. works very well for me.
I’m still using a LG 48" OLED tv (originally bought for when I had the series X) coupled with a PC, and it’s great at 4k and 120Hz, vrr, hdr. But I do sit about 6-7ft away from it. IMO it would become too big up closer sat on a desk top. It’s also quite bright, so I get dry eyes a lot from staring at it (and my phone lol) , so I couldn’t imagine wanting to sit closer to it. Nice tv though.
Maybe you won’t be happy because of missing vrr and gsync.
I have a Samsung qn92d 55’’ with vrr and gsync, only for mfs, and it works great!
So if possible upgrade to a newer model, you won’t regret.
I’m considering selling the Alienware monitor I have and getting the LG C4 42”, or the much cheaper HISENSE 43E7NQTUK (does anyone know if this is any good?)
I use my PC for work also so I think the 42” would be a good size.
Is this worth doing? Is the immersion going to be so much more worth it? Or am I best just sticking with the Alienware AW3423DW?
Unfortunately im very indecisive when it comes to making decisions which cost money.
Nothing but hardware controllers between me and my some years old 62" Q80 with freesync and the view is fantastic for flight simming. I’m on Xbox series X so that part is not relevant here, but the view from where I sit is so immersive. Go big and stay home LOL!
Hi @TearlessFiend27,
I’ll defer to @MSFSRonS. I have not tried reducing my monitor’s refresh rate or disabling VRR, so cannot speak from personal experience. Since you’re not purchasing a new TV here, I’d suggest hooking up your your LG B6 & seeing how it works. If flying is more fun & immersive, keep it and make your Alienware a secondary monitor for web browsing & other peripheral apps you might need while flying. If it does not work out, you can go back to your existing monitor or consider purchasing a new TV or monitor.

i agree with @WingWarper1
I’m flying only fenix and i’m using FSLTL & GSX pro and it runs super smooth when using this extra features.
There are no stutters and i have about 60 FPS on ground (120 in the air), even at inibuilds EGLL, i love it.
I would definitvely not go back, when using airliner.
Just my opinion, maybe for slower aircraft it is not necessary.
