Is Downing Leg on First Solo Flight working?

Hello guys, I think the “Downing Leg on First Solo Flight” is not working, I can’t take more than 50% this topic.

The requirements are 8000 ft 80 speed.

Can someone show me a video or even a print screen from this training?

If you’re aiming at “all As” you’d better don’t. The scripts in the training are bugged and simply unfinished, they would grant 100% for a messy landing and only 40% for a totally legit maneuver. Moreover, they can’t handle deviations, they can’t recognize neither a crash, nor a go-around.

As far as I remember, I did quite good on downwind in Sedona, maybe even 100%. But again, this had nothing to do with real performance.

Hello there lexmirnov! Thanks for answering!

I am trying to take all A, but just the First Solo Flight is missing. And I can’t take Downing Leg more than 50%. I really don’t know why.

Same thing. What does the game expect from us exactly? This is one of my good results. Downwind leg didn’t seem so much worse then the other phases of the flight. I’d love to see what the game is measuring here. For example, does it measure the distance between the airplane and the path we see in the briefing? Instructor says “good but could be better”, but it doesn’t say what could be better.

After about 8 hours of practice, this is as close as I could get to acing it.

This is extremely frustrating.

I finally got an A, despite downwind leg being broken.

Four years later with MSFS 2024, the same issues with Flight Training still apply. You can fly by the numbers perfectly, yet won’t get more than 50% on the downwind.

This mission is bugged in 2020 as well.
I couldn’t believe they didn’t bother to fix this…

I seem to have the same problem with the downwind leg in this excersise.

I think the issue exists in other modules of the training sylibus too. For example the first navigation exercise seems to only score overflying the runway at a max of 50% too.

A bit frustrating when you’re trying to fly by the numbers

Nice work on this. Any particular tips you can share for the take-off portion? Best I’ve scored there is 79. What was your take-off speed, your initial flaps, your altitude on the crosswind turn?

Omg this is driving me crazy. I was sure I’m doing something wrong but its just a bug?

I have all tutorials at A score and wanted this one too but can’t get that ■■■■ Downwind for more than 49%.
Also the description in briefing says different altitudes than the one shown in the blue path, which one are correect then?

I would love to finally move to career mode but my OCD don’t let me go from tutorials. I’m like at 60th try for this one :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

I’d like to add my $0.02 to this after getting an A in this mission, after 15-20 tries.

I noticed the scoring is extremely picky about maintaining the designated airspeed and altitude, flying outside these criteria will cause your points to drop quickly. Here was my strategy:

  1. Takeoff: Ignore the instructor’s monologue, just hit full throttle immediately, rotate at 55 KIAS. In the climb-out I aimed for 75 KIAS right away, and raised the flaps as I approached 70. Continue climbing at 75 knots past the designated altitude (5300 ft or so). It felt like takeoff and crosswind had the most generous leeway in airspeed of +/- 1.5 knots or so but constantly aim for 75.
  2. Crosswind: Enter the crosswind turn at 75 knots, this will be a standard-rate climbing turn. Try to maintain 75 knots throughout the turn. After rolling out of the turn continue climbing, reaching 6020 or 6040 feet just before turning onto downwind is ideal.
  3. Downwind: Another standard-rate turn onto downwind at 75 knots. You should be at roughly 6020 feet several seconds before the mission prompt windows tells you to. After getting straight and level on downwind you have to be quick and accurate with the throttle because up to this point you’re still at full throttle and will blow past the 80 knot limit if you don’t bring the power back in time. This transition is where trial and error or luck comes in. Once you reach 80 knots a power setting of about 1970 RPM is perfect for holding the airspeed at 6000 ft. It seemed like any where from 5960-6040 ft is fine from a grading standpoint but never fly below 79 knots or over 82 knots. As you fly halfway down the runway the 6000 ft restriction will be canceled and the mission prompt window will tell you to lower flaps 10 deg. Don’t waste any time lowering flaps but remember to lower the nose to maintain 80 knots. I ended up busting the 80 knot limit at this point but still got an A so it’s not the end of the world as long as you get the speed down quickly.
  4. Base: When the mission prompt for downwind clears start turning towards the base waypoint and use 20 deg of flaps to slow to 75 knots. I also decreased throttle about 200 RPM to help get the speed and glide path right. The main thing is speed and sticking to the GPS path on the HUD overlay.
  5. Final: Drop 30 deg of flaps and start pitching for 65 as you turn on final. You do not want to go below 65 knots at all but up to 67 knots is fine. Use power to adjust the glide path as needed. The GPS path comes in at an angle to the runway so don’t worry about getting lined up until you’re almost at the threshold. Just hold 65 knots all the way until you’re ready to cut power and flare. After touching down on the centerline I just slammed on the brakes, raised the flaps and held elevator like it was a short field landing.
  • I didn’t bother setting the trim
  • I used the HUD overlay to stick to the intended path around the pattern, this seemed to help with the scoring a lot
  • I mostly stared at the PFD the entire time

Also I’ve never seen anyone get higher than 49% on the downwind, because the scoring system is absolutely broken. Best of luck to anyone who is trying to get an A on all the missions, it is a testament to human suffering.

Yes, an A is possible, just completing the downing leg at >49% (or >50%?) seems to be impossible. For anybody who can reproduce, it would be great to get a vote on First Solo Flight: "Downing Leg" scoring broken

Just got a 100% on by 3rd try. Trick was to be at 75-76 knots, turn into base sharp 30degrees bank quite soon and be at 5500 ft
And then I messed up my flare

Sry for the brightness I’m in HDR and sniping tool does not like it.

Congratulations, but this is a different mission. The “Downwind” mission rating works. For the mission “First Flight” the scoring for the “Downwind leg” seems to be broken, though, because it seems to be impossible to get more than 49% (or maybe 50% if perfect?) for that part.

Ye you are right I was on the downwind mission not the first solo. I’m trying the first solo now :frowning:
