Is Flight sim playable without knowing your location?

With there being no white toolbar after loading saved game ( the result of which there is no map) and there also being no town and city labels after loading saved game - is flight sim playable or not ?

I have pretty much given up on all these bugs being fixed now

My device is x box series x
Just use cessna 152 plane ( same as that in tutorials)

All I do is go to world map and zoom in on an airport runway - set as departure and then take off and fly.

But with no location labels for towns and cities and no white toolbar after loading saved game - any ideas how I can play the game

Thanks for your help

The beauty of MSFS is that you can navigate using landmarks and roads. I find it more fun to fly this way rather than using gps. You do need a map and some preplanning. Or google maps. You can also get direction from atc to get you there. The compass and stopwatch are also your friend.

I find that loading a saved flight is almost useless because I always seem to get locked out of changing some setting I want to change.

So do you just start a flight from a departure runway and just play from there and never save a flight - as loading a saved flight loses all the things that should be there like the white toolbar and the location markers for the towns and cities.

It’s just that if you were doing a long flight say from London to Rome - you can’t do this in one go on the cessna 152 as it will take too long and would need to load from a saved flight. But as we know loading from a saved flight does not work - so how do you get round this

I know the compass is still there as a navigation aid but how do you use ATC if it is possible ?

If you can give me say locations- for example what airport you depart from and where you fly to etc without loading a saved flight - that will hopefully give me some idea of how to make the most of flight sim and to play the game effectively - despite the bugs within it

Many thanks

Yeah that’s basically what I do. I don’t plan any long routes using the world map. I had too much trouble getting it to work the way I wanted, so I never bother with it anymore. Once I load into the flight, I can bring up the flight assistant cities/landmarks, VFR map, or use the map on the G1000 to give me an idea of where I am during the flight.

The flight assistant that brings up names of locations and landmarks does work as well the map via the white toolbar- the important thing here is you must continue playing once you start a flight from a departure runway - you lose this functionality if you load from a saved flight - so you must never play this game loading from a saved flight

What’s the difference between VFR map and the G1000 map

My plane is cessna 152 which is the plane in the tutorials - so I don’t know if I have access to all the navigation aids

I’m not sure to be honest. I rarely open the VFR map from the toolbar menu because the G1000 already has one, and it seems to be easier to use and have better features.

Is the G1000 the name of plane you fly in

If it is the name of plane - is it an advanced plane or can an absolute beginner like me find it easy to fly

It’s the name of the Garmin avionics used in some of the planes such as the Cessna 172 Skyhawk G1000

Is that plane difficult to fly for absolute beginners like me

If you can suggest a different plane other than cessna 152 that has good map features and is easy to fly for absolute beginners that will be good

No it’s easy to fly like the 152.

OK- I will give that plane a try. How do I access the special map for this plane once I start a flight - what buttons do I press

My device is x box series x with x box controller

You’ll see the map on the right hand side. It’s easy to learn, plus you’ll have fun learning the autopilot.

I hope that in terms of flying the plane it’s exactly the same as the cessna 152 - as far as x box controller and button presses are concerned - in the way of taking off and flying at altitude etc.

The difference being its got a special map to the right on the 172 control display which the 152 does not have - which will hopefully be useful for navigation

Thanks for your help. I will get back to you if I have any problems

FWIW here is what I do:

  • Save every 15 minutes in flight. This is for CTD recovery purposes only.
  • In case there is a CTD, load the latest save. It will typically be in flight, unless the CTD was right after takeoff or during taxi.
  • Recover the flight path which is usually a little sketchy when loading in the air. Once straight and level and stable in speed, enable an autopilot in basic modes (heading + alt) since I will have a fair amount of panel work to do next.
  • Figure out where I am. How depends on what I was doing. If it is a basic noFR flight a quick glance out the window is usually sufficient. If it is a VFR or IFR flight I use my printed navlog; if time after reloading is now 0845 and I marked one waypoint crossing at 0840 and the next at 0849 I am between those two waypoints.
  • Get myself on track to the next waypoint. That could mean setting a magnetic heading according to my navlog, or entering a quick Direct-TO in the GPS, or tuning a VOR to track to, or something like that. Ensure terrain clearance is guaranteed on the current track and altitude. Now I have anything from a few minutes to half an hour to get the next steps completed.
  • Scan the panel carefully, configure everything that needs configured. Depending on the aircraft that could mean everything saved and loaded properly and nothing needs reconfigured, or that things like pressurization are all messed up and need reset.
  • Re-enter my flight plan in the GPS or FMGC as applicable if needed. This can take a while if it is a long IFR flight. Needs to be done manually since the MSFS flight planner is not available and loading a .pln file is not available.
  • Back to normal, continue my flight.

The key is: I don’t use the sim toolbar, sim VFR map, or any of that stuff. I just use the tools available in the aircraft, not the tools provided by the sim. Doing it that way the save and load functionality works. I have had to do this a few times in various aircraft, including more complex ones like the PMDG DC-6 and most frequently with G1000 NXi equipped aircraft (those CTD almost every flight for me if I try to use them), and it works.

I highly recommend taking the tutorials in order that are included with MSFS. These should address many of your questions about flying the C152 and basic navigation. Since these are included in the MSFS purchase price, might as well try them.

BTW, even though the C152 does not have the “glass panel” Garmin, GPS, or an autopilot, it has all the radios and navigation equipment needed for long distance flights.

Don’t know what flight plans are and how to start them - never used them before

I agree with SeverusAviation. Break it up into separate flights like they do in the Bush Trip activities. Also, if you can, I suggest getting a wireless USB mouse and plugging it into your Series X. I bought a Logitech M510 and it was a huge quality of life enhancement. You don’t need to set anything up. You just plug it in, turn it on, and it works. You can access the menu without having to enter cursor mode on the controller. It makes it easier to fiddle with the buttons, switches, and knobs in the cockpit too.

So to create a Flight Plan:
Go to the World Map. In the top left, just under the picture of your currently selected plane, you will see a search bar.

  • Click on it and type in KVGT and hit the hamburger button on your Xbox controller (used to be the Start button, now it has 3 horizontal lines). That should bring up the KVGT North Las Vegas airport. Click on that and choose SET AS DEPARTURE

  • Click on the Search bar again and type in KBVU and hit the hamburger button. That should show KBVU Boulder City Municipal Click on that and choose SET AS ARRIVAL

  • Click on the Search bar again and type in Hoover and hit the hamburger button. Under POI click on Hoover Dam and choose ADD

Notice that it placed a blue line going from KVGT to the Hoover Dam and then to KBVU. You just created a flight plan, you can use the left and right triggers to zoom in and out. Look up to the top right of the screen and you should see a blue NAV LOG box. Click on that and you can see the full flight plan with a Waypoint Log, Headings, Distance between each waypoint, etc.

I suggest watching this video from SimHangar Flight Simulations. He goes step by step and shows you how to create a flight plan on Xbox.

Thanks for your help
