First off, I having a gAmInG lApToP, not a PC. However, my laptop is upgradeable to 32GB RAM, and I have 16GB right now.
The rest of my specs are:
i7-9750h
RTX 2060 Mobile
Latest Windows 2004
500gb SSD for windows/documents/pics and 1TB HDD for games
I run at a mix of high/ultra settings and get around 20-30fps in cities, 30-40 anywhere else.
So my question is, is it worth it to upgrade RAM? I found a compatible memory set from Crucial (2666mHz, SODIMM, 16GBx2) but currently it’s $133.
Is it worth it? Should I only get it if it goes on sale?
Much appreciated.
Hate to spoil the party but this week I did an upgrade from 16GB-2400 to 32GB-3600 and I gained about 1 to 3 FPS. Only in heavy area’s like Manhattan it uses a little more than 16Gb now.
The best one to answer that is your “Piggy Bank”
At the moment, the improvement from 8G to 16G is far more evident than 16G to 32G
In the future, 32 G may gain you more than it does now.
At the moment my Gaming laptop is 1 x 8G. It really needs more, so I went for it, and will be maxing it out to 2 x 16G. Hopefully the increase will be noticable…
RAM is not for direct gaining FPS, but it can definitely prevent longer stutters when scenery must be loaded on-the-fly. It should also make launching things a bit quicker.
That’s right, but after the “100% YES, ABSOLUTELY and DAY and NIGHT” remarks I just wanted to point out that for me the result was not that spectacular.
Upgrading to 32GB is most definitely worth it, if you like me who likes to fiddle with settings and adjust the LOD beyond spec, then even 32GB will sometimes be on the edge depending on where you fly. I guess in a way it’s nice to eventually see most of my memory utilised
Increased Memory Capacity will allow for a slightly smoother experience, however RAM speed will deliver in some cases moderate/noticeable FPS differences.
I have 64GB ram and im only getting 20 - 30 FPS, im running an iMac Pro 10 core and Radeon Pro Vega 64 but cant get it over 30 lol, but good luck it may just be a Mac thing for me
Agree, that’s why I wrote it was not for “direct” gaining. More RAM doesn’t make CPU or GPU any faster, but all things are smoother, which may sometimes give better effects than slightly upgrading CPU or GPU.
It did wonders for my setup. I stream on Twitch and when I ran MSFS and Streamlabs OBS at the same time, I was maxing out RAM and the PC started to use the swapdisk, and man… talk about a hit in performance. When I went from 16 to 32, I could then see that the PC was using 18-20GB when streaming MSFS. The upgrade made a big difference for me.
