Is it worth upgrading? (i7-9700k + RTX2070 to i9-10900k + RTX3080)

Hey there!

I am currently using the i7-9700k together with a Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super Gaming Oc and I thought about upgrading to an i9-10900k and a MSI RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio. Do you guys think that it would actually be worth it? Currently I am getting a lot of stutters and significant frame drops when playing on ultra. The sim is running pretty smooth on high settings though. So would the stutters and stuff actually be getting better with the hardware mentioned above or does the sim not quite yet take advantage of better hardware? If yes, how much of a gain in performance would it be?

Greetings

I wouldn’t do it. A 9700 and a 2070 are a strong pair. Wait and see what the next patch or two does… that’s my $0.02…

Alright, because I was kinda confused when it said that I am GPU limited on the FPS monitor.

What I’ve found is I get better results turning Dev Mode off. The software is smooth and rarely stutters, even with Little Navmap constantly updating.

This is true even at a busy airport like KSFO, at night, with tons of traffic.

If u throw money around sure. Tho you shouldn’t expect massive fps improvements imo.

Sink the money in a decent yoke, display, vr headset, throttle cluster idk.

Really? Thanks for the hint.
At least departing from KJFK I noticed no difference

Yea you might be right. It´s just cause I could sell my current hardware for a very good price but I still don´t know if it´s worth the effort. Its probably not I guess.

Go through the tradeoffs, if u end up getting a good price and your out of pocket isn’t crazy and u got it to spare it might be worth it.

This gen will be around for a while so ur unlikely to regret it like some 2080ti buyers may right now… (me almost included)

It’s not going to make things worse i hope (unless u end up with broken parts)

Just my 2 cents as a random person on the internet I wouldnt put too much weight to it.

I spent a good amount on. A decent rig and now wonder if I should have gone with better flight controls since most games are sim type (elite, squadrons, X-Plane, mfs) where fps are great but not all.

I’m not seeing enough increase in performance in the benchmarks to justify upgrading from my 2080 to the 3080. The other thing to keep in mind is you might get higher FPS but it doesn’t mean the stutters and other performance issues will disappear. Most of the performance issues right now are software based not so much with the hardware.

What resolution are you using?

Also take into account the cost of new motherboard for the new Intel processor. The processor is not even the bottleneck here as you can probably easily get over 5ghz on your 9700K. The sim is hardly optimized to take advantage of cores you already have, let alone more. And if you look at benchmarks, the performance gain going from a 9xxx to 10xxx is just not there.
As for the video cards, you got a fairly mid/high end already and going to a 3080 won’t be a HUGE improvement in FS2020. The sim is just not optimized to take full advantage of it.

I’ve got a Ryzen 3600XT with a 1080TI at 1440P, I get practically no stuttering. My settings are a mix if ULTRA and HIGH END. Its looks amazing and I’m constantly around 50-60fps.

You got a faster CPU than I, and also similar GPU performance, you should be getting pretty good performance as is, if not, review your settings. if the stuttering is so bad it bothers you, something else might be wrong.

You have a good current system that’s only one generation old. It doesn’t make financial sense right now to upgrade to the setup you mentioned, not to mention the time and unavailability of 3080 itself.
It makes even LESS sense if you’re upgrading for FS2020 because it doesn’t change the fact that the sim itself is poorly optimized. You’re better off just waiting for better optimizations, going the 3080 just isn’t going to bring the performance you think it’s going to bring.

What resolution are you at and how much RAM?

what is the DEV MODE i would like to turn this off if possible.
thanks

Development mode.

If you don’t know what it is, you don’t have it enabled.

Thanks, that solves that.

No. I would keep the I7-9700. Do what you want with your GPU. I for instance am more than happy with my 1080ti. 1440p (2K), Ultra, no stutters. If I open dev mode it say ‘limited by GPU’. If you have ‘limited by main thread’ however what to do? Use a CPU that matches your GPU. So first put the 30XX in your rig, it’s supposed to relieve the CPU for graphics. The 20XX asks too much from the CPU, for sure. So replace your GPU now or wait until october what AMD/ RYZEN brings to the table.

I have the same as you and I just watched a video of an RTX 3090 + i9 10850K and assuming money was not a concern I wouldn’t even upgrade to that for FS. I’m giving this sim a little time before I dump any hardware money into it.

System Specs:
asrock z390 phantom gaming mobo
I7-9700k @ 4.9 GHz
32 GB Ram
Geforce RTX 2070 running 1440p Acer monitor
FS is on dedicated 500gb M.2
Internet download speed average 450 Mbps

The important thing to know is, no matter how powerful your computer is, this game is not optimized, so it is highly possible that in 5 months your preset computer will perform at 60 FPSs, potentially. I wouldn’t buy anything just for MSFS, I would wait. The present state of the game is not a good representation of the final game, not even close.

Agree completely. Balance is what seems to work the best. When I have Dev Mode enabled the console rapidly oscillates between GPU and Main Thread. Since release, my system seems to work pretty well, giving good frame rates and no stutters. Here’s my build:

Gigabyte Aorus X570 Elite WiFi
Ryzen 5 3600
Gigabyte 5700XT
Corsair Vengeance 3200 - 2 X 16GB
WD Black 1TB NVMe SSD
Corsair RM850x PSU

Windows Version 1909, and up-to-date drivers for the mainboard and GPU
125 Mbps internet
