Would that work on a “billless” cap. I use reading glasses for looking at my monitor. On my big screen next to my setup I run Little Navmap which is far enough away to not need the glasses, in fact they make it blurry. The bill on a baseball cap blocks that and I end up moving glasses or trying to have a little “window” to look through. A cap without a bill would be a great help.
Parts list? Pics?
So, my TrackIR arrived. First impressions: Intrigued. I see potential. Not fully sure I like it yet, but I don’t hate it. Spent some time watching youtube videos on setup and profiles etc. Yeah, I’m going to give this a good go.
I use my DCS profile for MSFS too..
But it is mostly a very personal setting and what users like.
I think it’s worth it if you have a large screen, particularly if you’re using a TV or an ultra-wide monitor. If you’re using a 27 standard 16:9 ratio monitor, I think usefulness will be very limited.
I just received my TrackIR yesterday and started playing around with the config, buttons for centre and pause, etc. And I second this. Having it on all the time can be rather disorienting. I turn it on when I want to look around. Otherwise, I find just pausing it is the best option. It’s biggest strength for me is when you’re doing manual landing / pattern work or taxiing around the airport. Being able to quickly and accurately look around is crucial. In flight, I only enable it when I need to look around.
Actually, I use such a monitor, and I respectfully disagree. Track IR is one of the best investments I ever made.
It has to be said, though, that I have the monitor hanging only about 40-50 cm from my eyes because of the way my surgery-enhanced vision works. My lenses have been replaced with bifocal artificial ones which provide optimal sharpness at reading distance and infinity.
Absolutely. On my stick and my yoke the button under my right thumb is my Trackir pause. I run Little Navmap on my 60" TV to my right and when I need to look over at it of course Trackir tries to follow which is disorienting. And looking down at instruments and switches as you note is much easier. I also have a button to switch me to the outside-behind view. I then sorta look down moving the plane to the top third of the screen and then pause. This gives a good sight seeing view while I grab the beer mug! I have a Saitek pro-panel and switches set up so VR is not a particular option like my driving sims. The Trackir compensates.
Here is a vid of me using TrackIR…
Ignore what I say in here, it was for another thread…
Absolutely. I have other addon hardware and 3 monitor which I would not be able to use if I had a full VR headset type.
As the old saying “best thing since sliced bread”.
Hello. I use also opentrack with my webcam of my laptop. But it is not perfect, because the bad ankle of the cam to my head… I look always down to my laptop (cam), so when i go forward with my head to “zoom in” for reading the cockpit panel, i look over the dash. So i am too high with my view. I think, the better solution would be an external webcam, which is higher mounted (same height like your head?) Above my laptop, i have also a 27" monitor on the wall for the main view of MSFS. I should place an external cam on the top edge of my 27" wall monitor…? But which webcam should i buy? Thanks! ![]()
Yes. It is, yes.
So, then you just adjust the speed of turn settings in the trackIR settings app. So, if you look right it left, it will move quicker, and your eyes will still be looking forwards.
I appreciate the suggestion, but fundamentally the model of TrackIR is incompatible with natural looking around for me. Leave it for the folks who enjoy it despite this. ![]()
TrackIR is a must for dogfighting and likely will prove to be good for air racing.
I used TrackIR for years but got tired of wearing any kind of headgear.
I prefer a more laid back approach by setting views for each aircraft which is not realistic unless you had backup cameras on your aircraft which, when you think of it, cars have them.
Personally, I don’t think VR or a TrackIR is for me anymore. The same goes for headsets. I vote not required on the TrackIR.
I love TIR, and find it really natural to just look around without keyboard immersion-breaking. I love being able to look over the nose by just sitting up in my chair a little. I’m getting underway with VR, but I’m still on the fence a bit…
I switched back to TrackIR from VR.
Just saw this thread. Lots of interesting info. I’m thinking of investing in a trackIR set up. Just for a bit of extra immersion when I’m not using VR and it looks great for making youtube videos.
Is there any particular trackIR set up I should go for or that people would recommend? I don’t really want to break the bank but they same to vary in price. The Natural Point ones are more expensive but seem impossible to get hold of anyway. I’m guessing I should stay away from the cheap ebay ones or are they ok?
This one seems to get decent reviews and is reasonably priced Amazon.co.uk
That should work just fine.
Yea I want one too men just for the looking around like IRL is Cool!!
Flight simming is on another level after you start using head tracking.
Can’t imagine giving up on it.
