Is TrackIR worth it?

I would hold off and see what the feedback is on Tobii Face/Eye tracking support coming with SU7 tomorrow is like before making a buying decision. If implemented correctly, it will be at least the equal of TrackIR without the need for wearing anything on your head and the eye tracking may offer some additional benefit/accuracy.

That looks interesting but it looks like it’s more than I really want to spend. I’ll see what the feedback is like on it.

You could try SmoothTrack which has an Android and iOS app. I recently got and works well.

I know I’m late to the party, but I can’t even imagine flying without TrackIR anymore. I keep thinking about trying VR, but like the OP I really rely heavily on other screens for things.

Seems like now after SU7 when you pause Track IR using F9 it actually disables it in the camera settings and you have to open camera settings to enable it back even after un-pausing it via F9…

I started a thread on that here @KillerJackson82

TrackIR is worth it, it’s cheaper than VR and works very well.

However, I personally use VR these days over my TrackIR, due to the immersion / realism and distraction free environment it provides, and also the portability. I often take the headset and my laptop with me whenever I know I’ll be overnighting somewhere and want to go over some flying events throughout the day.

On that note, I feel this decision also comes down to the enviornment you have and hardware you want to use, I found the TrackIR and laptop combination harder to use than my old 3 monitor desktop and TrackIR setup. Just due to the awkwardness of sitting on a couch with the laptop and the screen, that had the TrackIR sensor on it, moving around, it wasn’t too bad at a desk, but the limited screen size just wasn’t doing it for me ..

The only real down side with VR is the clarity affordable headsets provide (I’m currently using HTC Vive), at times it’s hard to read small text on instruments in the cockpit.

I often use ‘OVR Toolkit’ to overlay checklists and manuals into the virtual environment, mostly just put them on the copilot seat, they are usually pretty clear and easy to read, without becoming distracting. Which negated my requirement for additional monitors.

Been using it for about 20 years. Yes…very much worth it IMO. Adds the reality of allowing you to move your head and pan around your cockpit in a realistic manner.

And it’s a much simpler solution that VR, requiring much less expense and configuration.

Absolutely! So much immersion in most VFR situations, especially when you consider how detailed the Scenery is!

Does TrackIR5 work with windows11?

Yes. No problem.

Any recommendations for a good kit? Sorry not very knowledgeable on this stuff.

there is original a “passive” ( a cap with reflectors ) and a “active” kit ( with led clip for e.g headphone ), in case you mean that. My recommendation is the “active” kid..

Thank you.

Any particular brands you could recommend?

The thread is named after TrackIR. I’d recommend, uh, TrackIR!

Version 5, of course.

I know this is a bit of an older thread but I just got one and it’s amazing! I tried to mess with the open source options but had to build / buy a few parts for it to work well so I just went with TrackIr. Runs well, setup is easy, and the interface is awesome. I have a few other games that use this too, what fun!
