MSFS on a PC is a completely different experience. Waste no time if you are thinking on building a PC
leave Xbox for games that are suppose to be played there ![]()
AI is something that currently only Asobo can change
The planes might just fly at the right altitude but Iâd expect most of the other stupid AI behaviour to remain.
Does the in sim ATC control this traffic at all?
Looks fantastic. However, I do hope JF improves the behaviors of default AI traffic with that release:
- quickly exit runway after landing
- never banking left or right somewhere above middle of airports when going around
- do not turn around on taxiway when holding and waiting
Looks interesting but whats the FPS hit? Currently with live traffic and that enhanced live traffic mod I get about a 10fps hit with the current beta build with my 5600X. At big busy airports its even worse and its basically unplayable.
Hopefully because this is AI driven its a bit more optimised and performs better.
As has been stated many many times before in the SimpleTraffic and AIG threads:
changes to aircraft behaviour currently is not part of the SDK and thus behaviour cannot be altered in any way.
Guess you are talking about AIG?
This mod uses dozens of free aircraft models of different origin - some of which are pretty detailed and most likely havenât been optimised for MSFS traffic. So in that respect AIG is a big collection of liveries and model from different creators and with different quality. Itâs no wonder the performance impact is significant.
In contrast Simple Traffic by Aerosoft uses only the ugly generic models that came with MSFS traffic. I couldnât detect any performance hit so far.
I expect JF to keep in mind performance and create aircraft models that provide a suitable compromise in order to keep performance and visual quality balanced out.
In my opinion on PC itâs really not worth buying any traffic addons currently. It seems as though the AI traffic will remain broken and (unintentionally, I hope) regressed in various small ways every update until Asobo finally manage to devote some resources to making a big push on it.
Iâm frustrated at the lack of even basic bandaid fixes since it got largely borked in SU5.
AIG gets a pass being a freeware effort but these payware products are going to come under a lot more scrutiny till then.
Yeah I donât think thatâs the case at all. Lets not take jabs at the Asoboâs skill and competency, which is undoubtable given the very fact this amazing sim exists in the first place.
I can be frustrated at the lack of progress on my pet peeves while realizing theyâre working to their own set of priorities. The current patch cycles are chocked full of other features that are also highly requested. I will just need to suck it up like everyone and be patient until they can plan and implement something.
However in that time Itâd be very hard for me to justify buying a payware traffic product given the shortfalls.
Iâve no doubt theyâll get it right eventually. Even if they lack the expertise they definitely have the resources available to get the right people involved as they have done with various features to date.
I give Asobo credit for doing a fair job of merging global satellite imagery with elevation data to produce the 3D terrain effect. Layered on top of this autogen buildings are ok, and photogrammetry is in early evolution with mixed results, but as they themselves said in recent Q&Aâs the problems with AI traffic and ATC lie with the underlying FSX code and they have stated that rather than re-invent the wheel they are going to layer solutions on top. Which is the basis of my comments. Obviously I hope things improve, but there seems to be a long way to go and I am very old so I hope I live long enough to see it ![]()
I also give Asobo credit for the big push in recent months to reduce the number of CTDâs. The sim is definitely becoming more stable, at least for me. I am also very happy with the clouds despite what some others say, and the night skies are awesome.
In the mean time third party developers are doing a stunning job of enhancing the sim despite the difficulties.
Apparently, according to the grapevine, the job vacancy with Asobo for a developer with ATC knowledge is still unfilled.
Anyway⊠spaceships.
The issue with AI traffic in MSFS isnât FSX code, as FS2002 through P3D has actually pretty competent AI code, but the lack thereof. MSFS appears by all measurements to be using independent code for AI traffic that is both far more inflexible and overbearing, as well as simplistic and poorly implemented. FSX AI traffic was largely tweakable based on flight model. From what I can tell in MSFS, every AI aircraft is assigned an identical flight performance and behavior model, with variations between GA and Jetliners from what I can tell. The AI traffic behavior needs a serious overhaul, but it is not the fault of âunderlying FSX codeâ.
Asobo are a small to medium size team and it takes time to research and implement new or amend existing code. This combined with post 2008 organisational infrastructureâs can bog down release schedules in favour of lines on a chart to senior stakeholders which makes delivering what seems on face value a simple fix a long winded process.
Iâd rather they get it right the âsecond timeâ every time than rush the first. We as the user have to accept the first release could be a buggy one and itâs how software is built these days to keep the price ridiculously low for consumers. Iâd hate to think what it would cost us if MSFS was built using a legacy approach, hundreds, maybe even thousands.
AIG traffic are mostly using models coming from FS9 and FSX + P3D. Some of them has been updated to be more advanced and follow modern day optimisation techniques to allow better performance, some are just simply hopelessly outdated.
But they are all optimised for AI traffic, although you will see worrying details like drooping flight control surfaces, detailed reversers (in some TFS AI models - these dudes are obsessed with details), and also satnav dish variants. These are the things you canât get in any payware AI traffic. Most AI Traffic enthusiasts from back in the day are plane spotters type of aviation geek, so they really care about special liveries like different type fonts, engine cowl that has different paint stripe, and all those obsessive things like that. Seeing SIA 777 with P&W engine would probably anger them.
JFâs FS Traffic is somewhere in the middle between AIG and Aerosoftâs Simple Traffic - which is basically potato. I have JFâs Traffic Global for XP11, they are somewhat working, although you wonât have as much variety like special liveries, or missing engine varieties (every 767 has RR engines, despite the texture indicating a GE model exists, and PW is simple not anywhere to be found). But the latest preview shows that at least we can see CFM and IAE variants on the A320s.
Behaviour wise, Asoboâs MSFS is quite an improvement, with some game-breaking immersion killer. Compared to old MSFS:
- AI do not pushback
- AI do not use ground services
- AI do not follow SID/STARs, nor a proper flight plan, and fly a straight line â this is by far, a very significant enhancement.
- AI follow SID/STAR restrictions like speed / altitude limit - although ATC will often override and ruin this
But they also do a lot of weird things now:
- Air show fly-by during go-around. Haneda or JFK tower are being constantly buzzed by low-flying passenger jets
- They slowly spin around on hold short
Things that are still not solved from FS9/FSX days:
- Hogging the runway after landing: they take their sweet time to slow down all the way before exiting the runway
- Mostly default ATC problem: they donât know how to properly space the traffic, or AI simply do not know how to do this
- AI race each other during approach
I wonât severely blame Asobo for this and that, given the constant free World Updates and periodical significant patches. But then again, I wonât disagree with some of the criticisms either, we just need to be fair. I think 2 years is indeed a very long time, FS2004 would have been supplanted by FSX by now.
Here is how you got that in FS2004 (VHHH during busy hour - screenshot taken at 1 March 2008):
Admitedly, they do not stray around or buzzing the tower.
Back then AIG will only provide you with schedules, which you have to manually compile & match one-by-one with your aircraft titles in the .cfg file.
Also, we already got that level of detail with previous AI model from 20 years ago, why settle for potatoes? And yes, that A340 is probably made by the same group who did the A330/777 for AIG today.
Iâm not able to give any specific info at the moment but we will be looking closely at performance. The models have been built from scratch and optimised for MSFS but we wanât to give the users a few options to tweak performance if needed.
John - Just Flight.
What about the airliners flying all around 500-5000ft AGL all the time and ? Havenât seen a single airliner at FL100+ ever in AI traffic.
Also on some airports (i.e. LOWI) planes regularly just park sideways on the runway. And when using Simple Traffic some are âflickeringâ while switching through multiple liveries (which could of course be a problem with Simple Traffic)
At the moment the AI altitude for offline traffic is in relation to YOUR altitude. If you are on the ground than the AI is âcruisingâ very low. If you are flying at FL380 the AI will also cruise up there. I had AI flying at FL410.
Thanks. Youâre being serious I guess ⊠Hadnât realised that. ![]()
To be honest, in my book thatâs pretty much the single most idiotic thing I have ever heard in connection to how MSFS works. I canât imaging a bunch if devs sitting around a table (or in a Zoom call) and agreeing that this is a good idea âŠ
Iâm not sure if they actually wanted it that way. It could be an oversight because they were so focused on getting live traffic going. A different reason could be that maybe the cruise altitude for offline traffic is missing somewhere. Maybe the AI gets the instruction to fly from A to B but not at which altitude so it spawns around the player. I can only speculate at this point.
AI traffic are most likely not in the agenda.
This is why from day one, I never really bothered with it and go straight with third party developerâs work instead.
I can see many, many disappointed faces at the release day of THIS add onâŠ
I know the folks on JustFlight know their stuff, but even they canât do miracles.
Itâs the pig & lipstick thing. We get new flightplans, 3D models and some fancy liveries. Thatâs it. The underlying problems with the AI will remain untill Asobo put their hands on it one day.
Read the countless AI threads here, or at the AIG homepage to know what is broken with the AI system in this sim.
Look forward to this add on if you like, but again dont be too disappointed if itâs not that you hoped for.
