I’m really baffled why some people get locked files and others dont. And I have no idea what decides it or how to prevent it from using the locks.
I always had those locks in 2020 and after a new motherboard and clean Windows 11 install it was again locked.
Even Stalker 2 and Indiana Jones have locks. I’m beginning to think it’s a Xbox App (beta access) causing those problems.
I noticed that you have locked settings files. I’m wondering if any of the applications might have locked them. I’m referring to game optimization apps such as the new Nvidia app, Nvidia GeForce Experience or similar applications.
Edit
I’d like to mention that I’m using Windows 10 Pro and I don’t use the beta version of the Xbox app.
Nope, I dont use any of those apps. Using Windows 11 Pro now but used Windows 10 Pro on 2020 version (same locks then).
I might install Windows 11 on another drive and see if a clean install with only the Xbox app works.
I just stumbled upon this. Can’t remove this stupid protection, can’t set the community folder to my ownership, which doesn’t allow me to move files or copy stuff around saying “my organization does not allow this action”.
This is just absurd with all the mods and sceneries I have installed in this folder. What were you thinking Asobo?
No idea how you could solve the Organization problem other then check the group policy . I dont have a managed by a organization on the system drive but they still get locked.
You can try robocopy or zip/rar the community folder without compression (store), the lock will be removed on unpacking and you can make a new community folder.
Ones you have moved your files you should be able to delete all files/folders from the root folder and on a restart it will make those without a lock.
The whole lock system is pretty useless anyway, because it doesn’t even encrypt the files and it doesn’t happen on the Steam version (same for the protected .exe which is also a poorly implemented MSStore/Gamepass habbit).
Installed it couple days ago (game pass), why some of my folders are linked and some files locked pls? Do i need admin account? edit: It did let me edit UserCfg.opt file without any issues… So all ok?
It’s oke, you can delete them if you need/want to(after making a backup) the sim will create them without a lock afterwards.
If you installed MSFS 2024 launcher in a location other than the default C drive, symbolic links will still be created on the C drive and they must remain there.
Regardless of what I can do, I didn’t ask for this. Asobo should (must) work to remove this or there will be future issues, such as installers wanting to modify files within this folder and being unable to do so.
I understand what you are suggesting, this might work. But is Asobo really expecting simmers to turn into IT technicians in order to use the Community folder? I understand the locking of system folders, but this Community one is called that for a reason. I can’t even edit a freaking xml or cfg file!
Get you stuff together, people at Asobo, Microsoft or whoever. There’s no point in this “feature”!
Your post is missing information about the installation of MSFS.
What do you mean? This is happening to me in FS2024 purchased from the Microsoft Store. What else is needed?
For example, you didn’t provide the full path to the installed MSFS.
It’s installed on another drive, “D:\Xbox\Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024”. “Limitless” has mlinks to that folder.
If you installed MSFS 2024 launcher in a location other than the default C drive, symbolic links will still be created on the C drive.
I’ve been saying this for a long time: MSFS 2020 launcher should always be installed on the C drive. The same applies to MSFS 2024, as it only takes up around 10-12GB
Also, it is not recommended to install it on other drives because it can cause permission issues – and you’re a perfect example of that since you’re experiencing this problem.
If you installed MSFS 2024 on the D drive, you’ll find Community folder inside the WpSystem directory
What happens now if I use the move feature on the menu? Will it import this lock or remove it? Can it be done at this point without an reinstallation?
It would be safer to uninstall MSFS 2024 and restart Windows. After rebooting, install MSFS 2024 in the default location on the C drive: C > XboxGames.
Once MSFS 2024 is installed, if you want to have the Community folder in a different location than the default one, let me know.
If it should be installed on C: there shouldn’t be any option to install it anywhere else. But you can, so they should provide a good solution.
And… Steam doesn’t have any problem with the installation folder, same for the unprotected .exe. Steam’s own protection is poor at best, so it can’t be for that reason.
There are also no issues with the MS Store version. A lot depends on the system settings, its version and the user’s level of expertise. I personally don’t have any issues with MSFS 2020/2024 installer - I’m using version from the MS Store.
Same for me and 2020 I have both Steam and MS.
You probably have no issue because you dont need to point anything to FlightSimulator.exe. Not even Exploit Protection can’t use the .exe directly, only by name. How dumb is that.
