only thunderstroms with normal sunny clouds around Europe (EDDL&LIEO) and on my way from KTLH to MUCU
I sure hope so. I’m equal parts shocked and disappointed that the live weather is still a joke. I’ve lost count of the days I’ve had like today, where it couldn’t be more useless. In real life, widespread IFR from low ceilings due to the marine layer pushing in. Not just isolated, but all over the peninsula and sound (red and purple dots:
In the game it is clear and a million.
If it was localized fog that hit one airport I would get it, but this is morning overcast conditions that have been (1) forecast and (2) occurring (3) consistently for a week and a half straight now. Also, it’s the normal weather pattern all summer out here and at most shoreline airports on the west coast. I can’t comprehend how any system can completely whiff it, unless it’s computing weather at some ridiculously large scale, like hundreds of miles.
Weather, especially local weather, is one of the most defining and integral parts of flying. Just bizarre to have it basically be absent.
If there’s fog IRL, you can be 100% sure that in MSFS you won’t have it.
Why bother when Xbox gamers would hate fog blocking their visibility!
have thunderstroms since a week now at different flights and further in Europe AND North America and Caribean
Kcle to Kbuf have been pretty much fogged in for the last couple of days now, even had the spotty showers (spotty showers that this area is know) for last week, what Im getting sick of is there are freakin rainbows everywhere with live weather on and any percip in the area. I even had this one the other day that was a perfect circle…ah here it is this looks real right:
This is cleveland ohio area for the last couple of days:
in simulator you can see rainbow more often than in real life, and this can some confuse, but i don’t sure is not right, as in real life for see this, you have to be in right place out of rain, in the sim you flight around and so in any right condition for rainbow you will see that, i don’t sure in game is right, but in any way in game is normal situation to see much more rainbows than you can in rl
The fact that this continues to be named as “live” weather is a dangerous line to follow. “Active” weather would be more appropriate.
I’ve been flying at least 3-4 times a week now for the past month and paying attention to how the sim depicts weather, what the METAR reports are, what Foreflight is reporting, and what Metoblue’s forcast model has. In every flight, the sim has perfectly depicted what Meteoblue’s forcast model has called for with zero regard to the actual conditions.
Now that’s not to say these conditions are 100% inaccurate. More along the lines of 50-60%. Typically winds, temps, pressure, and humidity are within a safe margin (1 degree for temps, ~5 degrees in wind direction and ~2 knts in speed, and within .10 of METAR reported pressure). Cloud cover and precip however? That does not match real world reports at all. But it DOES match the Meteoblue forcast model.
Case in point, I just attempted to get my Piper Seneca out of MIE (simulating ownership and MIE is the closest Piper service location). METAR and radar shows zero precipitation at the airport. However, in sim its pouring down rain. Take a look at this:
The dotted line is current time. Everything else should be self explained. What’s being shown in the sim is matching perfectly with this forecast. And, sure enough as I sat waiting, the rain has slowed to nearly stopped and I can see the actual end of the rain band approaching the airport.
So again, calling this a “live” weather engine isn’t correct. “active” or “predictive” would be more fitting.
Sorry if I’m spinning people’s wheels in here and ya’ll already know this. But I just wanted to share what I’ve been researching over the past month.
They have already announced that we will soon be getting an extordanary weather system in the near future, lets quit beating a dead horse on this one until they get that part working and released. Then if its still bad we can start this thread back up. Im sure by now they are fully aware of the short comings of the current system.
But for the most part I think the weather is alright. Clouds look alright, when its raining outside my window it seems to be raining in the sim. I live in Northern Ohio, and the weather here can change on a whim, and Ive seen the sim actually reproduce the effect pretty well.
Since changing my approach to it, I don’t have any issues either. I honestly enjoy it. It may not be “live” but it certainly feels “alive”.
For me right now, the fact that the world for bing maps looks so unfinished is more of a game killer then the weather…
There’s some minor hitches for me in that regard. But unless you want to spend A LOT of time/money making the competition look like MSFS does out of the box…
Cruising at FL430, little to no weather on the radar, lighting all over, and also why can I hear thunder and lightning in the cockpit at FL430?
The thunder issue is something that sometimes happens and MSFS staff pretend not to see. So I suppose is something which isn’t going to be fixed
Something seems to be wrong with Live Weather today. It is partly working, but winds and temperature seem stuck at ground level. I climbed to 10000ft and the temp remained at 25 with no winds (correct for the METAR at the airport I had departed). It changed after I got about 20nm from the departure airport. It also seems only METAR data is loading, big jumps in temp, wind speeds and direction in between airports
yeah everything is back to front and upside down at the minute

Thanks hadn’t seen that post, super annoying the weather system is so finicky
For me this all started late last week, similar to the last time a sim update was coming out. Same time as they started the preview builds for Xbox to have access. I bet somethings different in the weather feed for SU5 and it’s broken SU4. We’ll see after 11 if it clears up in SU5.
SU5 installed and the live weather is STILL utter nonsense. Bright sunshine with some CU where I live right now and in the sim the airfield less than half a mile away is overcast with heavy rain.
Will this ever get fixed?
It’s such a shame to get a massive step forward with SU5 to then find the basics of the aviation world (and weather doesn’t really get anymore fundamental) simply don’t work.
