LOD > 2.0 + true Ultra Setting - is it possible after the ultra setting bug?

Dude, if your config is set to custom and you don’t mess with the slide thing that says low/med/high/ultra the mark as read only is superficial.

I use 4x4 LOD and love it, I have a shortcut on my desktop with a custom icon to my userconfig right next to my screenshots to enjoy it more often … i just don’t use read only and it works.

Well, I had it set to Read only. It worked FS2020 did not change it.

I went back to the Main Menu or desktop. Changed it to not “Read Only”. And ran FS2020.

FS2020 changed it back to the FS2020 default.

Changed “Custom” to “Ultra” and LODs to 2 from 9.

this over rides and makes your pre-set 9/8/7/6/5/X LOD not work/

Mildly edited for more less aggressive language.

No idea what this means.

But, the “Ultra” was put in the UserCfg.opt file by FS2020.

I thought this was what my Post was about.

This was a reply sent to @gordongreig.

His Post:

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

This was my reply to him acknowledging he was correct.

  1. Checked UserCfg.opt File
    Preset Custom
    Obj LoD = 9
    Terrain LoD=9
    File - Read Only
  2. Start FS2020
    When World Map appears
    UserCfg.opt is unchanged
  3. Exit FS2020 via “Quit to Desktop”
  4. Start FS2020
    When World Map appears
    UserCfg.opt is unchanged
  5. Great, this is what I wanted. Thank you.
And, I judge my graphics settings/quality from what I see on the
display. There is a world of difference from LoDs = 9 and LoDs = 2.

Note:
You said and I had seen on other Posts to not change any
settings in the FS2020 Options, General.

Edit:
Previous statement deleted.
Next day and new power up of PC and options remained the same.

Edit 2:
FS2020 itself has changed the Options, General, Graphics option for
Global Rendering Quality from Ultra to Custom.

Thanks, again…Ron S

I think once you set the preset from Custom to Ultra internally the game simply ignores every other “custom” value you changed. It’s probably running at whatever LOD the preset Ultra has and not at 9.

If the sim put Ultra in there then you are using the default Ultra settings. If you adjust a single thing after that, like turning motion blur off, then it will write Custom instead.

Able to fly at LOD 4 for both terrain and objects and keep a 30 fps locked frame rate. Anything higher can drop into the teens with head turning. Much better than previous with pre-loading of cache but I’m still only using 8 GB RAM (out of 32) which is slightly up from 5GB pre-WU6.

I still think there are some optimizations to go but I’m pleased with the visual/frame rate balance at this time.

LOD5 London with Ultra scenery caching has had a bit of a hit over London, but far smoother when panning my view around.

There seems to be some difference in the LoDs issue for WU6.

I have been using Preset = Custom, Obj LoD=9, Terrain LoD=9.

After WU6,1.19.8.0, it seems to have changed.
UserCfg.opt was set to the same, Custom, Lod9 , Lod9.
When flying, I immediately noticed improved graphics. I could see
new detail that I have not seen before.

But, my WTCJ4 was flying with reduced FPS from before WU6.
It was not flyable. Stutters, etc.

LoD 9
LODs = 9 FPS = 4 at Runway 31R
LoD 8
LoDs = 8 FPS = 9 at Runway 31R
LoDs = 8 FPS = 13 on Glide Slope KEWR

The LoD9 FPS = 4 was the problem. Pre WU6, the FPS was 13.

The new LoDs =8 settings were okay for FPS.
The WT CJ4 handles perfectly and responsive.
The scenery is still excellent and new.
Smooth flight.

Problem encountered:
I changed the LoDs to 8 and tried it. The FPS was better.
But FS2020 changed the LoDs back to 9.

I changed the LoDs back to 8.
And set the UserCfg.opt file as “Read Only”.

FS2020 did not change them after this.

I’m with u. I have 8700k OCed and rtx 3080 and anything over LOD is awful for performance (in G2 VR). Maybe our CPUs are getting lol?

What CPU do you have?

i9-9900K, 64GB 3600, GTX1660 TI, M,2 NVMe SSD.

Quick question for those who have been experimenting with changing values in the config file.

Does the sim need to be restarted? Or can one end the flight, quickly remove the “read only” property whilst the sim is in the main menu, edit the values and then put the file back onto read-only property again before starting the next flight?

Thanks in advance.

Typically a file cannot be edited/overwritten while its in use, so I suspect that it wont let you modify the config file while the game is running

I havent tested this though

If a file is “Read Only” (write protected), you cannot change it.

If it is not “Read Only”, you can change.

Edit:
Meaning FS2020 can or cannot change it.

You can make it “Read Only” or not at any time you want to.
You can make changes to it if it is not “Read Only”.

You can change the attribs in the usercfg.opt file while the game is running, but you’ll still have to relaunch the game for them to take affect.

What I do is to start the game with -r set then make the changes in the config. Then I can quit the game and set my lod’s up and a few other things you cant manage with the sliders and save and set +r and you good to go.

Whoops you say you forgot to change that value, alt tab - (-r) make the change click apply and then +r it back again. As long as you dont change anything with a menu selection, it will only save the modification you have made…

Thank you for confirming that.

It’s a bit of a pain having to reboot the sim each time, but I guess it will be worthwhile in the end finding that perfect LoD vs. performance balance.

Cheers,

Look at my Post above.

I made the UserCfg.opt file “Read Only” after changing it.

FS2020 has not changed it.

And I’ve never had to write protect the file, and I still have my custom settings.
