Low Fps on High End Settings, GPU and CPU Low Utilization

System Specs:
CPU: Threadripper 1950x
GPU: AMD Asus Vega 65 Strix
Memory: 32GB DDR-4 3200Mhz
HD: M.2 Samsung 970 Evo

I seem to be getting low utilization on both my CPU and GPU while running the sim. Gpu idles around 60% and CPU on either gaming mode or Creator Mode.

While outside of the cockpit I can get between 30-35 FPS on High, inside the Cockpit the max is 20-21 FPS. This is flying the 787 around the Denver airspace.

I turned on the in Game Developer Frame Counter and its constantly throwing ā€œLimited by Main Threadā€ but again checking device manager, everything is just idling along on my CPU and GPU sits around 50-80% utilization.

Any ideas on how this might be fixed?

Try adjusting render scale down a bit?

Same problem my GPU won’t go above 40% usage, most hovering around 30 - 35% usage …

Yeah, the Airliners (A320, 747, 787) are really frame killers in the cockpit. Has to be the simulated systems, especially the autopilot and the glass MFDs.
When flying a plane without an autopilot system the frames are the same, inside and outside the cockpit.
And that is too bad, the default airliners should be FPS friendly, the addon planes are the heavy ones due to the more complex simulated systems like FMC.

Christ while my RTX 2080 Super and TI performs flawless at high and ultra( somethings just visually are not worth the bump up and the first slider will kill any system if bumped beyond the ultra setting.)

My GPU utilization fluctuates from 70 to 98 percent, usually higher. For some rendering effects they CPU shoots up, but is far less used.

Def driver and programming issues going on for lower and mid range cards. .

When I restart the game without rebooting, FPS are back…

if rebooting fixes it temp. its a memory leak for those setups. It Should get fixed.

I don’t reboot… It seems to be the trick…

I have I7 6700 k and a 5700xt 32 ram and I have the same problem on the cockpit camera and on handcrafter big airports my GPU usage are low and on the dev mode I get Limited by Main Thread,

well the funny part is I did a test with the render scaling I found something very weird I was in new york airport with 320 on cockpit camera with render scaling at 100 I get 23 fps and my GPU usage was around 60% fluctuating from 800mhz to 1800 MHz, well I move the render scaling slider to 200 and I had 20 fps but my GPU usage was at 100% and the clock was at 2060mhz I try in other less heavy scenarios with the cockpit camera and in less heavy scenarios where I was getting 35 fps with the cockpit camera and 100 render scaling after an increase to 200 the fps was the same but my GPU usage was finally at 100% so this has to be a problem with optimization from the sim AMD or any other thing out of my knowledge

test this stuff to check if you get same results and let me know

Overall CPU usage is not a good indicator. Check how each core is doing. It looks like the problem is CPU bound, it’s probably a thread running on a single core, maxing it out and therefore limiting the rest.

The Ryzen 1xxxx series has a very poor single thread speed compared to other CPU’s.

This also explains the other observations mentioned here. When you increase render scale you’ll eventually become GPU bound, maxing out the GPU usage.

I checked again and my Core 0 is peaking constantly while in sim. While my other 15 sit around 20%. Almost makes me believe that, at least on the AMD side, the SIM can’t handle multithread CPU’s efficiently and dumps an ungodly amount or requests on the main core while others sit around and twiddle there thumbs.

yup that’s the main game loop. same on Intel tho for me it’s core 16. The sim does handle threading better than many other games, but it’s pretty CPU intensive regardless. Try reducing traffic density? disable v-sync, don’t run anything using simconnect (vpilot, navigraph etc). maybe that helps a bit?

I too noticed this on my set up…

Win 10 Pro 2004 19041.450
i7 3770K
32GB DDR3 RAM 1800 Trident X (CL 7-8-8-24)
Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3
Asus RTX 2070 OC 8GB
Crucial 1TB MX 500 SSD
(x3) 1TB RAW Mushkin SSDs
1920x1080p 24in Samsung curved LED
X56 HOTAS
TrackIR 5 Pro

Had to move the render slider to 190 before the GPU would hit 90 utilization. At 200 render it averages lo-mid 90’s. Sim set at ā€˜Ultra’ with vysnc off

Must be an AMD thing, it disperses equally depending on what is generated across my I9 but with double the threads of a I7 its not utilized totally as much, the GPU however is pushed on ultra on a RTX 2080 SUper and TI.

I found my best settings so far for i5 7600k, 16b ram, rtx 2070, ssd is 1080p render scale 200 on high settings no anti aliasing. Stays around 35 fps. Seems my cpu is maxing out and ram usage at 98%. Gpu 67%.

Recent update for vpilot to support MSFS is known to eat most of the frames. They are supposed to work on this issue since it is coming from simconnect.

yes I got this performance now on cockpit camera but i don’t have any difference of fps with the anti-aliasing on, the problem is on new york LA etc airports with an airliners cockpit camera is impossible to go over 30 fps

When you fly new airports with streamign data active… Frames will be slow.

Future flights after data decompression will be smooth. Had the issue when I first fley from paris to Rome. After frames were high.

Did a new flight from San fran to LAs vegas. With live data players on and Live map data. Slow at first then normalized and future were fine.

Even more so if you happen to be streaming live in HD to Youtube or Twitch. But always seems to balance out and is fine in future flights.

A group of us tested many systems. Most were striped down to essentials to test.

On most of the I7 RTX 2080 SUper and TI systems frames on ultra or mostly ultra minus FXAA and TAA AA settigns were 45-55 FPS (seems to lock with Refresh on for monitors at 60hz higher when using 144hz monitors or unlocked (10 fps difference no matter the refresh). Game locks below refresh.

New flight area all systems dropped dramatically. In air later it balanced out. We foudn sittign on the ground while Live streamign of map data was on (temp turning off Live palyers and live weather and flights) speed it up. Later flights were smooth from and too same airports.

Lower end cards liek the 1080TI and below Settings were best on High defaults and below. Setting the Nvidia settings at Quality or High texturing rathe then performance actually increased FPS. Performance actually bottle necked them.

THe first slider on graphic option should never exceed 1/2. THe other 2 you can fine tune for performance. AA was best on FXAA or TAA.

But nothing improved the initial map streaming and new airport sudden slow except letting it do its thing. Future flights frames on high end return to the norm of 45fps in density, 55+ in normal weather. 60 (locked 55 on 60hz monitors don’t know why) at high settings.

doesnt matter what settings i use, always low cpu/gpu usage, stuttering, low fps, just all around atrocious performance no matter what.
