Low performance on High end

Currently I am having issue with MSFS’s performance on my higher end system. Its frustrating, that for some reason my system can perform over 35 fps in most situations. Even more frustrating is the fact that not only can I not get over 30 fps, the fps is also very stutter which ruins the immersion. Some people say that I should ignore the fps but it is very much noticeable and not smooth what so ever. On average my FPS are below 30 FPS which should not be the case. Also I am aware that I am main thread limited according to the Dev mode.

CPU: AMD 5900x 12-Core Processor 4.2GHz (NO OVERCLOCK)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 (No Overclock)
RAM: 32 GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 3600 MHz (XMP Profile)
Resolution: 1440p
Nvidia Driver Version : 536.99
Boot Drive: Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2TB
MSFS Drive: Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2TB

Scenario: All Addons except aircraft disable. KMSF Airport (Default). Clear Skies

JF F28: 27 FPS
PMDG 737: 33 FPS
FBW A320: 32 FPS.

Settings:

Hardware Information screen shows no thermal throttling.

Troubleshooting Things Tried:

  • XMP Profile off
  • Reinstalling Drivers
  • Clearing Shaders Cache
  • Disabled all background running apps
  • DX11 VS DX12
  • Updating Drivers
  • No Thermal Throttling.

Can anyone give any help.

Have you tried it with the latest NVIDIA driver (537.13)?
You can find it at their site: Download The Latest Official GeForce Drivers
Regards

I apologize the driver version was kind of wonky its 536.99. I will update to the latest and see if that changes anything.

Updating Drivers did not fix the issue unfortunately.

Off screen terrain precache should be Ultra, not High.
Even if you don’t use it, try to delete the rolling cache. Is the game on a SSD unit?

Ill change those settings and ill update original post. Yes, MSFS runs off a Samsung EVO Pro SSD.

I am assuming you are CPU- limited in dev tool FPS display? If so, run HWInfo64 while playing and then check if any thermal throttling occurred.

No thermal throttling. according to my hardware monitor

Can you share the Dev Mode FPS output? To show us where the long frame times are?

This is a different scenario. This is at KJFK. Do these numbers seem right? I am able to get 35-40 FPS KSMF, after some suggestions, but I want to be able to fly in place like KJFK.

Your CPU is getting absolutely hammered. If your settings are the same as your OP, then drop ALL the traffic settings down to 0 just to test. See if that restores FPS and then raise them back up slowly to a level where your FPS is satisfactory.

I’m not familiar with your CPU, I’m Intel, but I think you’d be able to get better FPS than what you’ve been getting.

Good luck.

No, the time for the mainthread is not normal. There is definitly something wrong. I use a 5600 and have 12ms in the main thread for the original scenario with the settings from the screenshots.

Perhaps the remains of a mod …?

(4k 60-65 FPS @ KMSF, 3080, 3200 RAM)

What about other software/games. Is the performance normal in other use cases?

The high manipulators value is not normal: Check you sound device:

I have mode some Progress. @Shogimoto @sttovo

I watched a Youtube that suggested turning down the page file in windows, It is now set to 8 GB for only the boot drive. I also disabled HAGS. This seems to have brough my FPS up dramatically. Not Exciting but it did help.

Also The Manipulations audio didn’t seems to affect it too much after i gained the FPS with the other fixes .this is the latest grab of dev mode fps.

This is at KJFK.

The original scenario

I have very close specs on my PC. I also had some issues with stutter while taking off or flying fast and low near the buildings, like above Manhattan.
Biggest difference, in my case, was all these Anti-Aliasing options.
On AMD FSR2 - Ultra Performance, I get 100% stutter free in any situations of the sim, like the one above.
The image is too sharp for my taste, unlike TAA or NVIDIA DLSS, but it runs very smooth on the ULTRA settings.

If you find that your CPU won’t get any better frametimes, I’d suggest cranking up your GPU dependent settings to get that closer to a bottleneck over your CPU.

I also have a 5900x and as others have said your cpu is getting hammered. For comparison purposes, I have a screenshot below where I’m flying in NYC (cpu intensive area) at 3200x1800 resolution with a RX6800 gpu and fps locked at 40. As you can see, my mainthread is rendering at 13.1ms. My recommenfation is to pick a plane and airport then turn off all add ons, extra apps and fine tune. Once you are getting good results add in the addtional items one by one.
